Sorkin Meets TV Inventor’s Kin, At Least One of Them Is Giddy About It

Aaron Sorkin is clearly head-over-heels about television — his Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip is nothing but a big mash note to the importance of the boob tube.

But with everyone making fun of his lil’show (except this half FBLA, which still maintains it’s fabulous), Sorkin felt he must pronounce his love in a bigger, better, more accessible medium than network televsion could ever hope to provide: A play. That opened in San Diego.

OK, maybe the move is a bit misguided, but, apparently The Farnsworth Invention, which tells the story of how farm boy Philo Farnsworth was robbed of the recognition (and money) for inventing television, is a damn good play.

And staging it afforded Sorkin the opportunity to meet Chris Farnsworth, a screenwriter and Philo’s great-nephew, who was quite accidentally seated next to Sorkin on opening night.

Farnsworth says “Aaron Sorkin and the director, Des McAnuff, were incredibly kind and gracious to us, as were the entire cast and crew. Even though they were all busy with the rush of opening night, they took the time to talk to us (and listen to me babble incomprehensibly about just how really, really cool this was).”
