E! Entertainment Executive Steps Down

Lisa Berger, president of entertainment programming at E!, resigned from the network after nine years, according to TheWrap.

Berger was the mastermind behind Chelsea Lately, Keeping Up With the Kardashians and The Girls Next Door.

Prior to her arrival at E!, Berger was an executive vice president at Fox TV Studios and helped developed Road Rules at MTV.

“After nine wonderful years at E!, I have made the difficult decision to leave my post as President, Entertainment Programming,” Berger said in a statement. “My time at E! has been an amazing experience both professionally and personally, and it is hard to sum up nearly a decade of show launches, milestone moments and incredible friendships.”

No announcement has been made about Berger’s replacement.

Giuliana Rancic to Undergo Double Mastectomy

E! news and red carpet host Giuliana Rancic announced Monday on Today that she is undergoing a double mastectomy as part of her breast cancer treatment.

The 36-year-old had a failed lumpectomy that didn’t get rid of the cancer. Instead of going through another lumpectomy, Rancic decided on a double mastectomy — which means there’s less than a one percent chance of the cancer returning.

In addition, Ranic would like to have a child with her husband, Bill, and radiation treatment would further delay parenthood.

E! Red Carpet Host Battling Breast Cancer

Giuliana Rancic announced Monday that she’s battling breast cancer.

Doctors for the E! news and red carpet host discovered the cancer after Rancic attempted to get pregnant through in vitro fertilization. Rancic’s pregnancy attempts were featured on her Style Network reality show, Giuliana & Bill.

“Through my attempt to get pregnant for the third time, we sadly found out that I have early stages of breast cancer,”Rancic told NBC’s Today. “It’s been a shock. A lot of people have been asking, we saw that you went and got IVF, are you pregnant? But sadly, we’ve had to put that off.”

The 36-year-old will undergo surgery this week followed by six weeks of radiation. Her prognosis is good since the cancer was discovered early.

Rancic’s Today interview is after the jump and here’s to a speedy recovery.

Keeping Up with the Lings

While the daily lives of Sacramento born globe-trotting sisters Lisa Ling and Laura Ling would make for a potent reality TV show in the style of Keeping Up with the Kardashians, E! Entertainment has decided to go in a different direction in this case, hiring on Laura as exclusive new host and contributor to their hour-long program E! Investigates. New York Times media columnist Brian Stelter broke the news, which was then quickly picked up by the likes of TV Guide, The Hollywood Reporter and TV Squad.

“The folks at E! approached me several months ago,” Laura told FishbowlLA exclusively this morning via e-mail after returning from the doctor’s office where she watched four-month-old daughter Li get vaccine shots. “I’d [also] had some informal conversations with other outlets.”

On the one hand, this has to be a bitter pill for Current TV, the cable TV network for whom Ling was reporting at the time of her apprehension on the China-North Korea border in the early morning hours of March 17th, 2009. The new E! show sounds a lot like the old Vanguard program, albeit with more of a domestic focus, and even the way the San Francisco based network quietly blogged in late January about Ling’s decision to leave her post there as Vice President spoke volumes.

A Web Site Devotes Itself To ‘Stopping Ben Lyons’

lyons_header.jpgA person blogging under the name of “Scott Johnson” is so wildly offended by the very existence of E! personality (and At the Movies replacement) Ben Lyons that he created Stop Ben Lyons: Before He Destroys the Fabric of American Cinema, a virtually daily blog dedicated to tearing Lyons a new one:

“… the situation is just no longer tenable. Not only do I need a more serious film review show on TV, but more importantly BEN LYONS NEEDS TO BE STOPPED! He is making a mockery of one of the hallowed institutions of popular American film-going.”

The blog is interesting in that it’s not as mean-spirited as you might expect of a site devoted to the vehement destruction of another person’s career.

But we question how long this Scott Johnson can maintain this single-issue blog without becoming a bombed-out shell of his former self.

Don’t like Ben Lyons’ reviews, Scott? You’re not alone. But for your own sake, just change the channel… or better yet, e-mail us so we can psychoanalyze you in person!

Ben Lyons Intrigues Us

blyonskdfj;adks.jpg

A PR firm sent us a press release to let us know that Ben Lyons played video games last night. A little creepy in its banality, until you consider that the flaks didn’t mention whether the celebrated film critic actually won the movie trivia game he played. Hmmm…

Last night in Hollywood, CA, Ben Lyons, film critic for E! Entertainment and host of At the Movies, hung out with friends and played some of Xbox 360′s most anticipated entertainment games for this holiday. He put his movie knowledge to the test playing Scene It? Box Office Smash and showed his friends how to star in their own movie with You’re in the Movies on Xbox 360.

Matt Donnelly: Yet Another Journo Joins Buzznet

DSC02809.JPG

Matt Donnelly leaves E! (again), and this time — maybe — for good! Donnelly informed us that “after a great couple of months with Ken Baker and his team, I’m headed back to writing (after newsgathering with Ken) and reporting for Buzznet‘s Celebuzz.”

As we reported earlier, Jeff Leeds and Leslie Simon are already on board, and the place “is exploding.”

Congratulations, Matt!

Ben Lyons Is On Yet Another TV Show

blosldf.jpgFirst was the news that he was taking over for Ebert and Roeper, and now we learn E!‘s Ben Lyons has landed another gig: My Family’s Got Guts, a kind of extreme sports reality show — though, in Lyons’ case, a better title might have been My Family’s Got Connections.

HollyShorts Parties at Murano and We’re There. Kinda.

FBLA spies infiltrated the HollyShorts party at Murano last night and had this to report: start-up film makers are pretty rad.

A host of former journalists (a few from E! and a couple from People were spotted by our spies) have gotten into the short film-making, and from all accounts their films are worth checking out.

The May installment of the monthly screening series starts Friday, May 30 at the Echo Park Film Center in Echo Park. Tickets are $10 and available at the door. Doors open at 7:30 pm. Free wine, beer and soda – not to mention Q&As.
