The Nation Stumbles with Rupert Murdoch-Jack the Ripper Headline

We’re guessing that The Nation‘s Eric Alterman did not write the headline for his op ed about LA Times and Tribune Co. newspapers prospective owner Rupert Murdoch.

In the piece, Alterman cites various articulated views about the potential Murdoch-LAT match, including a pair of reporters for the Baltimore Sun and Chicago Tribune who ultimately view Murdoch as a “newsman.” From there, he writes:

True, but by the same logic, Jack the Ripper was a lover of the ladies. Murdoch may be a “newspaper man,” but he is surely not a man who respects honest journalism or even the laws of society as they apply to it (or much else, for that matter).

The Nation States the State of Newspapers

Eric Alterman writes:

I don’t have a better idea, except to repeat, again, the following: the loss of daily newspapers is a significant threat to the future of our democracy. It is far too important to be left in the hands of a bunch of clueless media moguls and their “chief innovation officers.”

Yeah, that’s about all we got too.

Laurie David and Larry David Splitting Up

Page 6 is reporting that Laurie and Larry David are separating after 14 years of marriage.

Laurie recently toured with Sheryl Crow to publicize the dangers of global warming and got Larry to drive a Prius on Curb Your Enthusiasm. Bet he writes a Ferrari into the next season.

He’s worth some $250 million. They have homes in LA and Martha’s Vineyard, (remember his tiff with Architectural Digest?) and in 2004, he told Eric Alterman for a piece on Hollywood fundraising in The Atlantic:

I heard nothing about the environment for all our lives and now this. I wish she would at least take back her own name.

That’s not going to happen. Larry David’s such the professional curmudgeon that it’s hard to tell when the joke stops.

R.I.P. Socialite Rank

Socialite Rank is shutting down, and the creators are working on a book about the whole experience. Were we all just pawns in their little game?
