Several weeks after the hiring was first announced by Anne Thompson, former Hollywood Reporter staffer Jay A. Fernandez has officially started today as Indiewire news editor and senior writer.

Per usual when it comes to these sorts of things, the Twitter welcome mat continues to be cast far and wide. Indiewire founder emeritus Eugene Hernandez welcomed Fernandez last Thursday to New York, where the latter has traveled to help cover the Tribeca Film Festival. Meanwhile, former THR colleague Daniel Miller returned a Fernandez weekend tweet-compliment by linking today to a review by the writer of a pair of Tribeca documentaries:

Festival co-founder Jane Rosenthal introduced Sexy Baby Friday with the straightforward admonition that as the mother of two teenage girls, she feels this doc is “the scariest movie I watched” from the fest program. When some in the crowd chuckled, she added, “We can laugh about it, but it’s not funny.”

IndieWire Snags Variety’s Dana Harris As New Editor-In-Chief

Variety loses yet another longtime staffer. IndieWire has grabbed up 11 year Variety vet Dana Harris as its new editor-in-chief.

LA Observed posts a bit from a Harris email:

Excited only begins to cover it; I am really looking forward to building on what co-founder and former EIC Eugene Hernandez began almost 15 years ago.

Harris fill the role Eugene Hernandez left back in October. Another Variety vet, Anne Thompson, had been serving as editor-at-large.

This is my last post at Variety.com. I loved my stint here, but I’m moving on, taking Thompson on Hollywood to its new home.

I’m going independent in more ways than one. Sunday night I’m launching a new Thompson on Hollywood, housed at IndieWIRE, the web-savvy, thriving online indie trade founded by Eugene Hernandez 13 years ago. The site has continued to grow since it was acquired by Ted Leonsis and Rick Allen‘s innovative documentary site SnagFilms last year.

IndieWire Top 10 Always A Hoot!

IndieWIRE, under the watchful eye of Eugene Hernandez, has been eager to back underdog films and support anything that goes against the grain for more than a decade. They probably voted for Dennis Kucinich, but you ever know.

That said, the round-up of IndieWIRE staffers and contributors is always a good read. Here it is.

Take a look and see if your indie IQ is anywhere near the experts. My feeling is no. But if you have to indulge, buy yourself a black beret and foreign cigarettes and rent a few dozen indie films and dig right in.

At best, an education. At worst, a half-day you’ll never get back, but you’ll always remember.
