The G-Rated Parenting Blog Facebook Doesn’t Want You To See*

The Tumblr blog Reasons My Son Is Crying is only 6 days old and already has an enthusiastic following. That’s because the site’s chronicle of the very specific logic behind a toddler’s meltdowns is familiar to anyone who has ever cared for young children, or even used to be one. Reasons My Son Is Crying is finding fans on Reddit and parenting blogs alike.

Facebook, however, is not laughing. They’ve blocked the website “for being spammy or unsafe” (the blog is neither) and removed all posts that linked to it.

This isn’t the first, or even the hundredth time Facebook has blocked innocuous links and content. In 2011, Facebook briefly took down film critic Roger Ebert‘s page for “violating the terms of service” after a controversial post by the author generated complaints. Facebook soon restored Ebert’s page and said its removal had been a mistake, but declined to explain further.

Old Media Kicking Ass on Facebook

What you’re looking at is part of a chart of the media websites with the most shared and liked content on Facebook (click for full version.) While Huffington Post leads the pack, it’s worth noting that most of the sites in the top 40 are old media properties like the New York Times, the BBC, and the Washington Post. Our Los Angeles Times is number 18 on the list. New media giant Buzzfeed, who created the chart, is at number 8.

As Buzzfeed explains, the chart shows “the publishers with the greatest number of stories that have over 100 Facebook interactions in the month of September. A “Facebook interaction” is defined as basically any kind of thing you can do with a link on Facebook — a like, a comment, or a share. The data was collected by Newswhip, which tracks over 5,000 English language newspapers and pulls the likes, shares and comments for their stories from Facebook’s open API.”

LA Lakers Are Champs of the Social Media World

While they might not be in the NBA Finals this season, the Los Angeles Lakers are the champions of the social media world.

Social media company Unmetric determined the Lakers rank as the highest social media team from the 2012 playoffs. Miami was second followed by Boston, the Los Angeles Clippers and the Chicago Bulls.

According to Unmetric, the scores are “a scientific blend of 24 qualitative and quantitative social media metrics, weighted and balanced to produce a single benchmarkable number.”

6 Huge Mistakes Journalists Make in Social Media

No. 3? You don’t have a plan.

Whether you’re looking to increase followers, drive clicks back to your website, or just get people buzzing about your stories, you need to have a plan for any social media platform you join. A good strategy will help you avoid wasting resources or, worse, breaking your company’s social media policy.

Chris O’Brien, business and technology columnist at the San Jose Mercury News, said his paper’s policy “is like a one-page, basic ‘use your head’ philosophy.” Don’t appear to be biased if you are a beat reporter. “Keep in mind that you are representing the organization out there,” he explained.

Are you using social media wisely? Find out in The Biggest Mistakes Journalists Make in Social Media.

KABC Leading the Way in Social Followers

With television networks finding new ways to incorporate social media into their broadcasts, it’s important to have a solid digital footprint.

In the case of KABC, they are leading the country in the number of Facebook likes (344,145) and Twitter followers (78,053), according to Lost Remote. This is the first time a TV station has led both categories.

“As a news organization, we see social media as a way for our viewers to talk to us, and not just as a way for us to talk to them,” KABC’s vice president/news director Cheryl Fair told Lost Remote on the secret to such strong numbers. ”Listening is important. Since starting our Twitter feed in 2008, we have made it a commitment to reply to comments and questions as often as we can. People will frequently Tweet us to let us know about what’s happening near them and to ask us for details. That carried over to our relationship with our viewers on our Facebook page.”

Los Angeles Lakers Surpass 11 Million Facebook Fans

The Boston Celtics might have more NBA titles, but the Los Angeles Lakers are the champions of Facebook.

The Lakers are the first American professional sports team to surpass 11 million Facebook fans and now rank fourth worldwide behind a trio of European soccer clubs — FC Barcelona (23 million), Real Madrid (22 million) and Manchester United (20 million).

Just to show you how impressive this feat really is, the Lakers have 150,000 more Facebook fans than the NBA itself.

“When we created our Facebook page three years ago, we did so with the intention of using the platform as a way to personally connect with our fans not only in America, but all over the world,” said Lakers executive Tim Harris. “To know that we are accomplishing that goal is truly gratifying and we appreciate the support from our fans.”

“While many signed up and interacted in good faith, others took the opportunity to use the public forum to post inappropriate and hateful speech,” Brusic said in a letter to readers.

OCRegister.com will make the switch to Facebook Thursday night, forcing those highly opinionated readers that aren’t on Facebook to sign up for an account.

After the jump is Brusic’s entire letter:

Richard Metzger Contends Media is Guilty of Sloppy Reporting on Facebook Scandal

Earlier this week, Facebook found itself embroiled in controversy when a fairly benign photo of gay men kissing was labeled by the site as “abusive material” and deleted from local author Richard Metzger’s profile. The story broke an Metzger’s website Dangerous Minds, and was covered by media institutions around the world, many of whom reported that Facebook officials had issued an apology for deleting the photo.

And that last bit, according to Metzger, is total bunk. Metzger and Niall O’Conghaile, the individuals whose photo was censored and who originally reported on the incident, have not received word one from Facebook.

In fact, the only actual evidence of an apology from Facebook that Metzger has been able to find anywhere is in the comments section of the Dangerous Minds blog:

LA Writer Perplexed by Homophobic Censorship of His Facebook Page

Over the weekend, Facebook deemed the photo below “abusive material” and removed it from the profile of Los Angeles-based author Richard Metzger.

The pic above is from a 2008 episode of the British soap opera Eastenders. An image of two fully clothed, adult men sharing a closed-mouth kiss that has been deemed appropriate for the whole of England, but is apparently too racy for Facebook.

The photo had been posted to Metzger’s profile by Brit blogger Niall O’Conghaile, who received a written warning from Facebook for sharing the pic. Both men write for DangerousMinds.net, and have been using the popular site to protest what they see as blatant homophobia. And really, what else could it be?

Embattled San Francisco Chronicle Workers Speak Out on Facebook

As the union for the San Francisco Chronicle braces for another round of negotiations with management, workers have taken to Facebook to express their frustrations and call for public support. Says one post:‎

‘Like’ this group to let Hearst know you stand behind San Francisco Chronicle workers. Last year, when Hearst publicly threatened to close the paper, Guild members rushed in to help. We sacrificed. We agreed to givebacks that cut our pay, vacation, benefits and job security on the promise that the company would do the same. They didn’t. Like Wall Street, Hearst took its bailout and sheltered its executives.

That deserves a “Like,” eh?

Wired: Blogs Are Dead

Wired Magazine, which usually cheerleads everything, has declared blogging dead:

Further, text-based Web sites aren’t where the buzz is anymore. The reason blogs took off is that they made publishing easy for non-techies. Part of that simplicity was a lack of support for pictures, audio, and videoclips. At the time, multimedia content was too hard to upload, too unlikely to play back, and too hungry for bandwidth.

Social multimedia sites like YouTube, Flickr, and Facebook have since made publishing pics and video as easy as typing text. Easier, if you consider the time most bloggers spend fretting over their words. Take a clue from Robert Scoble, who made his name as Microsoft’s “technical evangelist” blogger from 2003 to 2006. Today, he focuses on posting videos and Twitter updates. “I keep my blog mostly for long-form writing,” he says.

Awesome. We’re going back to bed.
