This weekend’s big sports story will be The Masters and whether Tiger Woods can add a 15th major to his redemptive, winner’s circle march.

Over on DirectTV channels 201 through 207, viewers can watch every conceivable part of the Augusta action. And Sunday night at midnight, SoCal golf fans looking for post-tournament coverage and more can tune in to the debut of Going Roggin on NBC4 Southern California. From today’s announcement:

The 30-minute show will feature various segments including “Freducation,” “Local Legend,” “Viewer Comments” and “Fredtime Story.” In the “Freducation” segment, Fred Roggin gives a commentary on the week’s top stories and welcomes guests to debate and provide opinions. The segment also includes What The Fred?!, a look at some of the most unusual stories and videos from around the world of sports.

NBCLA’s Robert Kovacik on Covering the Summer Olympics

Each one of NBC’s ten O&O (“owned and operated”) stations across the country is sending a small team to the Summer Olympics. In the case of NBC Southern California, the lucky employees are anchor-reporter Robert Kovacik together with cameramen Sean Browning and Thomas Bravo.

“The goal is to make sure we highlight our local athletes, the participants, the spectators, to really show the Southern California participation in the London Olympics,” Kovacik tells FishbowlLA via telephone. “The nice thing is that all of these O&O crews are working together as a team. We’re sharing resources, potential interviews, story ideas… Right down to if I see a great shot of some guy walking around in a Yankees baseball cap, then I can pick up that shot and give it to our guys at WNBC in New York.”

“We’ll also be sharing a broadcast facility when we get there, and together, we are going to be a very strong and powerful operation,” he adds. “It also will afford me the opportunity to work directly with colleagues that I have admired for years.”

Kovacik says that since he called into his manager’s office back in February and told, ‘You’re going to the Olympics,’ it’s been a non-stop preparation process. Partly because NBC is aiming to make these the first “social Olympics.” As such, Kovacik will remain attached at the hip to his Twitter (@RobertNBCLA) and Facebook (/RobertNBCLA) accounts, posting updates as he goes.

Fred Roggin Failed to Get Stanley Cup Final on NBC

Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Final just wrapped up and if you don’t get the NBC Sports Network at home, you’ve missed the last two Los Angeles Kings home games.

NBC4 sports anchor Fred Roggin tried to get his station to air the games locally but didn’t have any luck, according to SportsByBrooks.com:

Fred Roggin told KSPN-AM he tried for 3 wks to get NBC to air Stanley Cup Games 3/4, relegated to NBCSN, on LA local KNBC Ch 4. No dice.

Denying #2 NBC affiliate request to air Kings Stanley Cup clincher – fronted by influential Roggin – wouldve been unthinkable pre-Comcast. — SPORTSbyBROOKS (@SPORTSbyBROOKS) June 7, 2012

Roggin at KNBC in LA since Original Six + hockey guy + wields biz influence beyond typical sports guy. Game on in LA if Ebersol still there.

The good news is NBC will carry the remaining Stanley Cup Final games. Game 5 is Saturday night in New Jersey.
