Don Barrett Joins the Orange County Register

On Friday, laradio.com founder Don Barrett (pictured) was part of a group paying tribute to departed journalist Gary Lycan at “Celebration for Life for Lycan,” held at the Orange County Register’s Santa Ana headquarters. On Saturday, Barrett led his first article as the paper’s new radio columnist this way:

For the past 2,000 weeks, the radio news has been dispensed to Orange County Register readers by Gary Lycan. Week in and week out, the Register has been the only consistent publication to cover news of the radio world. Earlier this month, radio’s biggest ambassador passed away. Today there is a new byline.

For years, Gary and I shared stories and resources, so it feels natural to expand my own efforts to Gary’s home base, where it will be my honor to continue the work he began at the Register.

Media Colleagues Pay Tribute to Gary Lycan

The measure of Gary Lycan, a much loved and respected Southern California radio columnist, is all over the Orange County Register‘s Facebook page. After a courageous battle with cancer, Lycan passed away on Tuesday at the age of 68.

Here is just a sampling at press time of some of the comments left on Facebook in response to the paper’s sharing of the obituary piece by Peter Larsen:

Tim Conway Jr. (KFI AM 640 radio host): If it wasn’t for Gary always including me in his pieces, I would not be working on KFI today. He was the best friend radio could have ever asked for.

Nancy Luna (Register food reporter): I am so sad to hear this news. Gary wasn’t just a great reporter, he was a great selfless person. He was one of my biggest supporters. He had a knack for sending me a note of encouragement when I needed it the most. Despite his illness, he was still upbeat and positive. I admired him for that. Gary, you will be missed deeply. Rest in peace.

Laid Off KOST-FM Personality Christine Martindale Goes Country

When Orange County Register radio columnist Gary Lycan reviewed the top stories of 2012, he suggested that Christine Martindale (pictured) was among the most prominent KOST 103.5 FM staffers affected by sweeping, nationwide Clear Channel layoffs. Befitting her status as a name-brand on-air personality, it did not take long for Martindale to find a new LA home.

Per an item in Radio Ink magazine, she will be taking over a new shift shortly:

Starting February 4, Martindale will be on KKGO FM 105.1 (“Go Country”) from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday. Station owner Saul Levine says, “She’s been one of the most talented and exciting on-air voices in Los Angeles radio.”

Longtime KABC 790 Talk Radio Host Ray Briem Passes Away

When Ray Briem retired from KABC in 1994 after 27 years working the AM graveyard shift (!), he told then-LA Times staff writer Claudia Puig he was looking froward to having more time to pursue his hobbies of flying, ham radio and listening to big band music:

“I’m 65 and my body says staying up all night ain’t the right thing to do,” said Briem, whose midnight-to-5 a.m. talk show on KABC is one of the longest-running in the market. “You never get used to it. Your biological clock, your circadian rhythms are always upset. There will be times when I will miss it, but being able to sleep at night – oh, how wonderful! That will more than compensate for the pangs of not having a forum.”

Briem was mentored early on in his career by another name from the halcyon days of LA radio, caustic talk show host Joe Pyne. At the time of his retirement, he was claiming 15.7% of local radio listeners. So he exited, much like Johnny Carson would on the TV side decades later, while still clearly on top.

Another Big Change at KLOS-FM

It’s not quite as momentous as Mark Thompson’s recently announced decision to retire from the Mark and Brian morning show after 25 years.

Still, via All Access Music Group comes the news that KLOS has now also lost its program director Jack Silver. He was separately overseeing, for a longer time at La Cienega Blvd. HQ, the operations of sister station KABC 790 AM:

“I feel great about what we’ve done here for the past two years at KLOS, particularly,” Silver told All Access. “I’m leaving on a high note, with Top 5 Adults 25-54, and #2 Men 25-54 total week at KLOS. We knocked both JACK FM and THE SOUND off their perches. I’m a certified PPM proven winner, and I’m ready for the next challenge.”

After 25 Wacky Years, KLOS-FM Morning Duo Mark and Brian About to Be Broken Up

In an exclusive two-part interview available to website members, Mark Thompson (pictured, at right), co-host of KLOS-FM’s long-running Mark and Brian, confirmed that he will be retiring from active duty this summer. Although he might still engage in the odd bit of work for the station, he warned his regular morning zoo co-hosting days are officially numbered.

Thompson says retiring has been on his mind, as he finished a plan to relocate to the Charlotte area with his wife. Thompson says the new house on Lake Norman has a studio and he’ll be available for occasional work, but he’s ready to quit doing the morning routine alongside Brian Phelps.

Orange County Register’s Gary Lycan Battling Cancer

Orange County Register media reporter Gary Lycan went public with his battle with advanced prostate cancer in his most recent column. He gave a nice shout-out to the team treating him at St. Joseph Cancer Pavillion in Orange and told of an interesting run-in he had while getting treatment.

I want to give a high-five this week to a reader, Joyce Lawson, whom I met this past week at the Medical Oncology Care Associates in the St. Joseph Cancer Pavillion in Orange. Lawson is one of a large staff of amazing caregivers there who assist patients like me.

I am being treated there for anemia and advanced prostate cancer by the remarkable team of Dr. Sam Huang. I’m getting blood infusions and chemotherapy and at this writing everything is going well.

But back to Lawson, a remarkably upbeat, positive woman who has been with Dr. Huang since 1998. When she heard my name, she looked and said “I recognize you.” When I asked her last name and she said “Lawson,” I entered a time tunnel back to 1962-63 when both of us were at Santa Ana High School.

“You wrote all about me,” she reminded me, and, indeed, I had. She was a rising track star and I profiled her for our high school paper The Generator.

Fast forward 50 years and we re-connected. It reminded me the state of wellness depends not only on good medicine, but wonderful people who touch your lives through all these years. Thank you, Joyce.

Nice story.

Here’s hoping for a swift treatment and recovery.

Jim Ladd Makes His Sirus XM Debut Feb. 13

Former KLOS-FM DJ Jim Ladd will make his debut on Sirius XM satellite radio on Monday, Feb. 13, according to Gary Lycan of The Orange County Register.

Ladd was hired by Sirius XM in December to host a nightly show on Deep Tracks (Channel 27).

“Jim Ladd on Deep Tracks” will air from 4-8 p.m. PT and there’s a chance the program will be replayed during the overnight hours.

KFI’s ‘Jesus Christ’ Lands a Cooking Show

Neil Saavedra, KFI’s (640 AM) marketing director and producer of “The Jesus Christ Show,” will host a new food show starting on Jan. 7 titled “The Fork Report.”

The show, from 2-4 p.m., will focus on local restaurants, kitchen gadgets, recalls, new products, and interviews with chefs, according to Gary Lycan of the Orange County Register.

“People who love food will love this show and people who don’t love food, well, who cares what they think,” Saavedra told Lycan.

Foodies now have a second show to listen to on Saturdays after KCRW’s “Good Food,” hosted by Evan Kleiman at 11 a.m.

Best of luck to Saavedra in his new gig.

KOST-FM Latest Station to Make Holiday Switch

KOST-FM (103.5) kicked off its 10th anniversary of holiday programming Tuesday, two days after 94.7 The Wave made the switch.

Gary Lycan of The Orange County Register notes Barry Manilow‘s “White Christmas” was the first holiday song the station played at 10 a.m.

Jim Ladd Will Get to Say Goodbye on KFI

KLOS-FM disc jockey Jim Ladd was one of a dozen employees abruptly laid off by Cumulus Media last week.

With no heads up from management, it appeared Ladd wouldn’t get a chance to say goodbye to his fans. But Gary Lycan of The Orange County Register reports Ladd will fill in for Lisa Ann Walter on Saturday, Nov. 5 from 4 p.m.-7 p.m.

“(KFI) Program Director Robin Bertolucci was very kind and asked me to do a show because I didn’t have a chance to say goodbye to my audience. I’m looking forward to it,” Ladd told Lycan via e-mail.

Kudos to KFI for doing the right thing and giving Ladd an outlet to conduct a proper farewell.

Jim Ladd, a legendary local disc jockey at KLOS (95.5 FM), was one of a dozen employees laid off by Cumulus Media earlier this week.

Ladd was on his third stint at KLOS, where he was on from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. Monday-Thursday. He first started at the classic rock station in 1969.

“My disappointment is I didn’t have a farewell show,” Ladd told Gary Lycan of The Orange County Register. “I was very stunned and I still am. I have been through this before, but it is always traumatic.”

According to Lycan, program director and host Bob Buchmann was also axed, along with employees from the sales, promotion, production and web departments.

Local Radio Fans Try to Replace LARadio.com

Mt. San Antonio College professor Tammy Trujillo and student Alan Bailey are trying to fill the radio news void left after LARadio.com came to an end following a 15-year run.

The two started Southern California Radio People, a Facebook group dedicated to providing local radio news.

“I have encouraged my students to look at the real world, and that in radio would be LARadio.com,” Trujillo told Gary Lycan of the Orange County Register. “When Don Barrett announced he was ending it, I talked to my students and one of my superstars, Alan, who is also program director at 90.1 FM Mt. Rock and www.audio8ball.com. I threw him the challenge to start Southern California Radio People.”

The 22-year-old Bailey took up Trujillo’s challenge. “It’s a void not having LARadio.com,” Bailey told Lycan. “But a lot of my generation has Facebook pages. People need to understand it is a hellacious tool for marketing.”

Actor Robert Conrad Notches Four-Year Radio Anniversary

Last week, the “PM Show with Robert Conrad” eased into its fourth year of weekly, easygoing conversations via a live broadcast at Fullerton restaurant Angelo’s and Vinci’s. Thanks to the Hollywood connections still enjoyed by the one-time star of TV series The Wild Wild West and Black Sheep Squadron, the guest was actress Lesley Ann Warren.

Per OC Register radio columnist Gary Lycan, Conrad has bounced back very nicely from a 2003 car accident and DUI conviction. The audio-video stream is recorded every Thursday from 3 to 5 p.m. for CRN Digital Talk Radio and reaches, according to the broadcaster, a combined five million households nationwide.

“You can applaud,” the former favorite target of Johnny Carson sketches said at the top of his September 22 broadcast. “There’s nothing that says you can’t give me the clap.”
