Whatever Happened to Jaye Davidson, Star of 1992′s The Crying Game?

Remember Jaye Davidson? Twenty years ago, the Riverside, CA native was front and center in the 1992 Oscar race, nominated as Best Supporting Actor for the role of Dil in Neil Jordan’s The Crying Game. He wound up losing to Gene Hackman’s evil Unforgiven sheriff.

The bulk of Awards Line managing editor Anthony D’Alessandro’s 20th anniversary look-back is about how producer Stephen Woolley and Miramax’s Harvey Weinstein miraculously managed to get the press to keep the film’s gender-bending plot twist a secret. But there’s also this tidbit:

Davidson never plotted an acting career in the first place. A prolific role as the sun god Ra in MGM’s scifi film Stargate followed. At one point during Cannes 1998, it was announced Davidson was attached to a Steven Seagal action title Cousin Joey opposite Mickey Rourke (which was never made).

Tweeting LA Juror Provides Spark for Social Media App

The following nugget from Thomson Reuters columnist Alison Frankel is worthy of a John Grisham novel. But it in fact happened right here in LA, at the beginning of 2010:

The idea for Jury Scout was born about eighteen months ago, when a lawyer in the middle of a three-month trial in Los Angeles noticed a prospective juror continually typing on his mobile phone. The lawyer called [Ron] Kurzman, who was working with him on the case. Kurzman searched the Internet and found out that the juror was posting repeatedly about the trial. Those comments resulted in the juror being removed and Kurzman developing the idea for Jury Scout.

For $295 per individual-specific search, Jury Scout will scour not just Twitter and Facebook but dozens of other sites such as Pandora and Yelp. To jump back to Grisham for a moment, think of Gene Hackman as Rankin Fitch in the 2003 drama Runaway Jury now disqualitying a potential juror because of some untoward comments posted about their local neighborhood IHOP!

Fine Print Frames Dick Clark-HFPA Dispute

In 1993, The Player was a Golden Globe winner for Best Feature, Musical or Comedy. In 2001, one of the HFPA awards show honors went to Gene Hackman for his portrayal of Royal Tenenbaum.

Now, courtesy of Alex Ben Block in this week’s Hollywood Reporter magazine, we have a detailed breakdown of the royal Tinseltown ruckus at the center of an ongoing legal dispute between Dick Clark Productions (DCP) and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association over rights to the organization’s lucrative annual awards show. DCP claims that contracts from those two above-mentioned years are key:

DCP says the contract language, which grants it rights to produce the Globes “for any extensions, renewals, substitutions or modifications of the NBC agreement,” means it can work on the telecast as long as it remains on NBC. The company argues that it single-handedly built the Globes into the international showbiz event it has become, more than justifying its perpetual rights.
