Grammy Nominations Concert Headed to Nashville

For the first time ever, The GRAMMY Nominations Concert Live!! (I question shows that have two exclamation points in the title) will take place outside of Los Angeles as the special will head to the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tenn.

“We are excited for the opportunity to bring ‘The GRAMMY Nominations Concert Special Live!!’ to Nashville this year as we recognize our nominees for the 55th Annual GRAMMY Awards,” said Neil Portnow, president/CEO of The Recording Academy in a statement. “Nashville’s rich musical and cultural history is so important and vital to our industry, and indeed to the world — a fact The Academy has recognized for decades by locating one of our most thriving and active Chapters there. We look forward to celebrating the year in music in such a passionate, vibrant, and flourishing city.”

The kickoff to Grammy Awards, which will reveal nominations and include musical performances from past winners and nominees, airs Dec. 5 at 10 p.m. PT on CBS.

Musicians Protest Outside Grammy Awards Over Ethnic Category Eliminations

Thirty-one categories were cut from the Grammy awards this year, mostly in Ethnic music fields, and the affected artists are fighting back. A petition to reinstate the axed categories, which include Latin jazz, Native American, Hawaiian, regional Mexican, Zydeco & Cajun music, has over six thousand signatures. Artists including Paul Simon and Carlos Santana have openly criticized the cuts. And then there was Sunday night’s protest. From Billboard:

About 70 artists and their supporters took to the streets near the Staples Center while the Grammy pre-telecast was taking place. After the demonstration the group was scheduled to perform at a showcase at Mama Juana’s nightclub in Studio City as a way to celebrate their music, show unity and send a message to the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS) that rallying will continue to bring back the categories.

At a recent Grammy event, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa expressed sympathy for the protestors. “I understand that what people are looking for is inclusion,” Villaraigosa said. “We’ve got to celebrate that.”

Grammy Awards Hires First Host in Seven Years

The ladies aren’t the only ones that love LL Cool J.

For the first time in seven years, the Grammy Awards have decided to go with a host in the rapper-turned-actor and co-star of NCIS: Los Angeles on CBS.

LL Cool J has previously served as host of the Grammy nominations concert. Queen Latifah was the last host of the Grammys back in 2005.

The Foo Fighters, Bruno Mars, Nicki Minaj, Taylor Swift, Jason Aldean and Kelly Clarkson are scheduled to perform on Feb. 12 from Staples Center.

“I will always have fond memories of my first Grammy Awards and to now be hosting the Grammy show, in the company of so many other incredible artists, is a dream come true,” LL Cool J said in a statement.

New OK Go Video High in Carbs

The award winning, DIY indie band OK Go has, well, done it again. Their latest self-directed music video is a departure from the band’s previous viral hits – there’s no intricate choreography to perform, there’s not even any performers. Just lots and lots of toast.

This one may not win a Grammy, but it is worth a watch.

PBS is developing an sure-fire pledge-break money spinning series–On Record: The Soundtrack of Our Lives, an eight-hour series tracing the history of recorded music and its impact on popular culture, (or at least on Baby Boomers, PBS’s target audience.) Series should air in 2010. Legendary Beatles producer George Martin hosts, and Kevin Spacey, who once played Bobby Darrin, is the narrator.

Fastlane Entertainment has signed a deal for the life story of Carl Perkins. Paul McCartney is on-board as well.

Frank Sinatra will be saluted in May via music, movies and the U.S. Postal Service in commemoration of the 10th anniversary of his death. Reprise Records releases Nothing But the Best, Turner Classics will air Sinatra’s films, and the Post Office issues a commemorative stamp.

And Sunday’s Grammys line-up includes a number of one of a kind duets and trios including the just announced Cornerstone of Rock performance by John Fogerty, Jerry Lee Lewis and Little Richard, as well as Alicia Keys and a holographic Frank Sinatra.

Following up on Oprah‘s ritzy fundraiser for Barack Obama last weekend in Montecito, Variety gives the deets on another campaign party planned for Southern California this weekend but this time it’s Magic Johnson hosting a bash for Hillary Clinton. Variety‘s Ted Johnson writes that some are calling the back-to-back events “an unprecedented courting of African Americans by each campaign”

Valkyrie Gains Access in Germany
Tom Cruise‘s star power has helped German officials change their minds, allowing the filmmakers behind Cruise’s Valkyrie to shoot at Bendlerblock, the original site where officers behind the failed 1944 plot to kill to kill Adolf Hitler were executed.

Gore to Appear at Emmys
Al Gore really loves Hollywood. Well, actually he loves the award shows. Gore is set to appear at this Sunday’s Emmy telecast during which his cable network, Current TV, is nominated in the interactive TV category. Variety reports that the showing will make him a veteran of the “Hollywood loop” following appearances at the Grammys, the Oscars and now the Emmys.

Foster Pic Expected to Win at B.O.
THR takes on the weekend boxoffice with Carl Diorio projecting that the Jodie Foster-starrer The Brave One will win the weekend taking in approximately $15 million. Other openers include Mr. Woodcock and Dragon Wars.

Joy in Toronto for Weinsteins
In more Toronto Film Festival news, the Weinstein Co. has acquired North American distribution rights to the music docu Joy Division, THR reports. Grant Gee directed the pic, an account of the late 1970s English rock band.

Ladies’ Night: Grammys Were About the Chicks … Except For One

Grammys night was ladies’ night, with Mary J. Blige and the Dixie Chicks, giving stunning performances and heartfelt acceptance speeches.

But some of the female artists looked like they were just waiting for the night to end so they could slink back into their sweat pants. (We’re looking at you, Carrie Underwood.)

Beyonce sings her heart out, and Carrie Underwood looks bored. Tony Bennett and Stevie Wonder get an award — that Stevie dedicates to his dead mom — and Carrie Underwood looks bored. The camera pans to Prince, who is sitting right in front of Carrie Underwood, and she smiles. And then looks bored. (Good thing the camera didn’t cut to her during that interminably boring John Mayer/Corrine Bailey Rae/John Legend act).

Even when she took the stage to accept her own awards and perform those purdy country songs, Carrie Underwood looked bored. Jesus, take the wheel; Carrie’s too bored to drive.
