Ever wonder who all those people are flying out of Van Nuys Airport on private aircraft? Per Geoff Boucher‘s rip-roaring LA Times article, one recent such take-off was winging Jon Favreau and his Cowboys & Aliens producer Ron Howard down to Austin, Texas for a critical rough footage preview of the Universal Pictures summer release at an Alamo Drafthouse event organized by Harry Knowles.

The beauty of the piece is the way it contrasts Favreau’s deft management of the new rules of “early fan engagement” with Howard’s clear admission that dealing with Twitter, Facebook and blog buzz is still a relatively new and scary process. Explains Howard:

“There’s a conversation now with fans and it starts a long time before the movie is even finished. The frightening thing for me is if somehow the wrong story gets out there and your film is misunderstood in some way… you need to shape the message, really. But Jon is the expert at this stuff.”

It’s All About the Benjamins

Ben Mankiewicz and Ben Lyons are apt to do a serviceable job taking over “At the Movies,” but perhaps the most alarming element (for any moviegoer worth their weight) is that neither has been a film critic before (well actually, Ben 2 was called a critic on E!, that repository of journalistic and critical integrity).

But the two of them are related to film critics or film screenwriters. Granted they’re pretty good screenwriters (Citizen Kane) and critics (Jeffrey Lyons of WNBC in New York). But is it like baseball where Bobby Bonds can produce a Barry Bonds? I’m not sure either of these guys can hit 762 home runs, steroids or not.

So we’ll all just have to rely on Harry Knowles to figure out the movie business.

Indiana Jones Spoilers Leaked

Page 6 has some details about the dancing fool who leaked secrets about the new Indiana Jones movie, despite the NDAs everyone signed. Spielberg has cut the guy’s scene in retaliation.

And somehow the long arm of Spielberg convinced the guy’s hometown paper to retract the story. Those Canucks–weenies. Here’s the whole thing for those who can’t figure out Google cache:

EDMOND-Tyler Nelson’s dancing talent has landed him a part in “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.”

The fourth film in the Indiana Jones saga will once again star Harrison Ford and is produced and directed by Steven Spielberg and George Lucas. Release of the film is expected during the week of Memorial Day, according to Lucasfilm.

The 23-year-old actor and dancer is the son of Theresa and Dr. David Nelson of Edmond. He now lives in Los Angeles and also appears in an upcoming movie with Brad Pitt.

“He has demonstrated that he is tenacious once setting a goal. He loves the process of mastering a new talent,” Theresa Nelson said.

What Tyler understands about the Indiana Jones movie is based on his own scenes that were filmed during the first week of September. Tyler plays a Russian soldier. Only the lead actors were ever given scripts, so Tyler still doesn’t know the entire plot.

“Apparently, the Soviet Army was searching for a crucifix skull in the jungles of South America and Indiana Jones was searching, as well,” Tyler said.
