Jay Mohr on Juggling Acting Gigs with FOX Sports Radio Duties

Just how hot is Jay Mohr these days?

Well, in the short time between when we spoke to him for Mediabistro’s weekly series “So What Do You Do?” and the publication today of that interview, he added a Hulu game show. Money Where Your Mouth Is premieres later this year and will feature male friends wagering their most prized possessions in a three-round, head-to-head Mohr-hosted battle.

We wondered how Mohr’s daily FOX Sports Radio show is affecting his ability to pursue TV guest star roles, feature films and the like. He told us so far, so good:

“I just did the season finale of Suburgatory, and they were very accommodating. I thought I might have trouble continuing to do the acting, but so far people are making it work.”

Phil Hendrie Bobbie Dooley Podcast Off to a Roaring Start

The name of Phil Hendrie’s latest hilarious enterprise sounds a lot like the sort of New York City nightclub Stefon might rave about on Weekend Update. It’s called Mmm Hmmm and really rolls off the tongue when Hendrie, as female alter ego Bobbie Dooley, pronounces those words.

The weekly podcast launched February 15 on the Sideshow Network, home of the Bravo-focused Watch What Crappens, George Lopez‘s Tell Me Your Story and more. The first episode with Patricia Arquette got 15,000 downloads in three days and the show continues today with Jay Mohr.

Other guests so far have been Joel McHale (like Mohr, a two-parter) and Sugar Ray Leonard. During the McHale interview, Dooley asked the Community and Talk Soup actor what advice he might give Hendrie about finally getting a TV pilot picked up. The pair quickly came up with a new pitch for Les Moonves involving Hendrie and McHale as cops who solve crimes committed by the latter’s character. “It writes itself,” McHale raved.

Jerry Seinfeld Does Surprise Set at The Improv

How do you stay limber ahead of stand-up performances in Redding (tomorrow) and Santa Barbara (Friday)? If you’re Jerry Seinfeld, that’s easy; you valet park the vintage wheels at Budd Friedman‘s Improv and walk on stage for an unannounced 20 minutes.

Jay Mohr was on the marquee for the early show at The Improv last night and tweeted out, with the hashtag #studygreatness, news of the Great Observational One’s drop-by. That in turn inspired this tweet from a certain Chelsea Lately regular:

Monday’s Jerry Buss Dig is Thursday’s Jay Mohr Sports Promo

Leading up to this morning’s edition of Jay Mohr Sports, the Fox Sports Radio host could be heard in a cheeky promo built around something LA Times columnist T.J. Simers told him earlier this week.

As Mohr points out in the tease, LA Lakers owner Jerry Buss had barely been dead a few hours when Simers led off his Monday morning on-air remarks with:

“He understood Hollywood better than maybe any other sports owner and in a time before anyone else. So when you’re a pioneer in anything, I think you deserve tremendous credit for having such foresight… Not to mention the young escorts that were with him a lot. He put himself out there as, really, kind of an LA creature.”

Jay Mohr Gratefully Stepping Into Jim Rome’s FOX Sports Radio Slot

This is an excellent fit, in no small part because over the years Jay Mohr has often filled in for the vacationing Jim Rome.

In a few weeks, when Rome officially wraps things up at FOX Sports Radio, the talented comedian and actor will take over Rome’s noon-to-3 p.m.-eastern national time slot. On KLAC AM 570, he will be heard between the PT hours of 9 a.m. and noon. As such, Jay Mohr Sports is sure to up the number of times a channeled Christopher Walken joins in as Monday morning quarterback. From today’s announcement:

Originating from FOX Sports Radio’s Los Angeles studios, Jay Mohr Sports will debut on radio stations nationwide Wednesday, January 2, 2013. “I’m looking forward to talking sports, connecting with listeners and interviewing amazing guests every day, while being a part of the FOX Sports Radio family,” said Mohr. “It was worth the wait…”

Larry King to Perform at KROQ’s Comedy Show

So … Larry King appears to be serious about this comedy thing, huh?

After embarking on his one-man show last year, the former CNN host is one of nine comedians scheduled to perform at Kevin & Bean’s April Foolishness charity comedy show on April 7 at the Gibson Amphitheater.

King will be joined by the likes of Eddie Izzard, Jay Mohr and the filthy Bob Saget.

This has train wreck written all over it. I’m begging the KROQ crowd not to be too mean to the 78-year-old King.

A Couple of SNL Alums Remember Chris Farley

Podcasts continue to be a boon for aficionados of stand-up comedy. Around every Internet corner are fabulous, extended reminiscences from comedians chatting (usually) with each other about the good and not-so-good old days.

On the November 17 episode of comedian Jay Mohr‘s “Mohr Stories” Smodcast, he welcomed fellow comic Dave Attell. Way back in the day, the two shared an SNL writers’ cubicle with three others. They chatted about all sorts of 30 Rock moments, including their memories of the late Chris Farley:

Mohr: “Remember, Norm [MacDonald] would do warm-up and then he would bring out Chris Farley, who would just stand there and wave. It was like AC/DC came on stage in Sydney, Australia. The crowd went crazy…”

New Jay Mohr Talk Show Sounds More Like a Sitcom

Here’s a familiar plot line: a wacky, outspoken TV talk show host clashes repeatedly with his wife, who is also producing the program. But each week, in the end, laughs and some lessons about matrimony prevail.

That’s the accidental sitcom context of Jay Mohr‘s latest non-sitcom project, which for his sake we hope lasts longer than his sitcoms. Beginning September 7, Mohr will talk up three topics at a time on FUEL TV for something called Master Debaters with Jay Mohr, under the watchful eye of producer-wife Nikki CoxPer the press release:

Mohr is joined weekly by a panel that includes former Major League outfielder Eric Byrnes and comedian Na’im Lynn. Special guests including Ron Artest, Michael Rapaport, Mark McGrath, Jason Ellis, Bryan Callen, Kevin Frazier, Jeremy Roenick, and Ralphie May join in the group discussions each week.
