Internet Pioneer Greg Siegel Joins Break Media

Before Greg Siegel became a talent agent in 1996 at Endeavor and represented folks like Ashton Kutcher and Jennifer Garner, he was dabbling while at Stanford with the earliest days of the Internet. He created one of the very first record industry websites (American Recording) and also launched an online chat show, Vima, when the Web browser of choice was Mosaic.

Now, after a three-year stint as founder-CEO of shuttered Glendale outfit VidMe.com, he is moving over to emerging FunnyorDie.com and CollegeHumor.com competitor Break Media as senior vice president, entertainment development. Per the press release:

“Greg has been one of the prominent forces behind merging new media and Hollywood,” said Keith Richman, CEO of Break Media. “He has a unique perspective on where the industry is heading; as we continue to invest resources and focus on developing more and more original content for the web, Greg’s addition leaves us well-positioned as we build new partnerships.”

What Does Gary Busey Want From Ryan Seacrest?

We’re determined to find out what Gary Busey meant when he menacingly told Ryan Seacrest that he’d been looking for him for years. When Seacrest asked what he’d done, Busey said, “It’s what you haven’t done.”

What hadn’t he done? Our only guess is that he hadn’t asked the questions his researchers prepared for him — how else to explain so many celebrities’ perplexed faces? (George Clooney bought a house on a whim in Malibu?!)

Tom O’Neil thinks Busey was pissed because Seacrest didn’t recognize him on the Red Carpet.

Whatever Seacrest was guilty of, poor Jennifer Garner got in the middle of it like a 4-year-old girl outside the wrong house during a drive-by.

Game Plan Picks Off Kingdom
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson rocked the box-office over the weekend with his family laffer The Game Plan from Disney. The kid pic opened at $22.7 million, exceeding weekend expecations, THR reports. The showing bested the No. 2 movie in theaters, the Jamie Foxx, Jennifer Garner-starrer The Kingdom, which grossed $17.7 million.

Desperate Housewives Win Night for ABC
The women of Wisteria Lane saw their season premiere last night on ABC and the Desperate Housewives showing was good enough for a first place finish in the primetime race, THR reports, but the ratings were still off 23% from last year’s season opener. However, THR also writes that it was the show’s best ratings since Nov. 26, 2006.

Morgan Readies Queen Sequel
Oscar-nominated scribe Peter Morgan is penning a sequel to the Helen Mirren-starrer The Queen, reports Variety. The pic – Morgan’s third in a ‘Blair trilogy’ – will center on former U.K. prime minister Tony Blair’s relationships with presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush. Michael Sheen, who played Blair in The Queen, is expected to reprise his role. But the bigger question is – who will play Clinton and Bush?!

Trade Round-Up: August 21, 2007

Variety’s Daniel Frankel and Ben Fritz tag team on a story about the drama surrounding Paramount and DreamWorks Animation’s DVD decisions. Paper announced on Tuesday that the studios have exclusively picked HD DVD for all future releases. The story details the move, saying that it’s the third by Paramount in an “ongoing format war,” not to mention DWA’s Jeffrey Katzenberg’s back-and-forth quotes on the format. Katzenberg normally isn’t one to second-guess major decisions, so read all of Variety’s archive reporting here.

Jennifer Garner is headed to the Great White Way, reports Variety. The “Alias” actress has signed on to star opposite soon-to-be big-nosed Kevin Kline in a revival of “Cyrano de Bergerac.” The role will be Garner’s first foray to the Broadway stage. Well, kind of. She served as an uderstudy in the 1995 revival of “A Month in the Country.” But film auds have no need to fret: she’ll be back on the big-screen soon in Uni’s “The Kingdom” and Fox Searchlight’s “Juno.”

Bidding wars are few and far between these days in Hollywood. However, a hot one has recently gone down with Universal cashing its way to the top of the crop to acquire “Lone Survivor.” The story centers on the life of Marcus Luttrell, a Navy Seal who led a team into Afghanistan in search of a major Taliban leader. THR dishes the details on the new deal, which include Peter Berg on board to direct.

Speaking of new projects, THR has also the scoop on another redo, this time about the sci-fi thriller “Logan’s Run.” The long-in-development Warner Bros. project will be directed by commercial helmer Josesph Kosinski and THR’s Borys Kit gives all the back-story in today’s report.

Variety also has a couple song and dance stories to fill the paper today. On the heels of news that “Hairspray” has become only the third recent musical to cross $100 million at the domestic box office, Michael Fleming reports that Rob Marshall and Harvey Weinstein are prepping a “Chicago” follow-up with “Nine.” Penelope Cruz, Marion Cotillard and Javier Bardem are on board. In the Trades: Remakes, Remakes, Remakes

Russell Crowe will star as the not-as-bad-as-we’ve-been-led-to-believe Sheriff of Nottingham, based on a spec script from Ethan Reiff and Cyris Voris of Sleeper Cell. Imagine’s Brian Glazer will produce for Universal.

Jennifer Garner will star in a remake of the perfect-the-way-it-is-now, so-why-mess-it-up? 1945 film Christmas in Connecticut. Barbara Stanwyck was wonderful as the undomesticated magazine columnist forced to entertain a war hero at Christmas. No writer has been assigned and FBLA hopes this project dies a well-deserved death. Remakes suck.

Speaking of remakes, Warner Bros. bought a Wonder Woman spec script, even though one they already have one from Joss Whedon. Joel Silver is producing the big-screen version, with Wheldon directing, and by buying the spec from new boys Matthew Jennison and Brent Strickland, a future legal problem is side-stepped.

Jordana Brewster will play Mrs. Smith for ABC in the pilot based on the Jolie-Pitt movie, to be directed by Doug Linman. Brewster was also courted by NBC for the Bionic Woman series. Is Brewster the new Linda Carter or the more accessible Angelina Jolie? Aren’t they all lesbian fantasy objects?
