Photographer Eric Charbonneau Joins AP’s Invision

You can add the name Eric Charbonneau to the parade of photo-credit names gracing images on The Hollywood Reporter website and weekly print magazine. He’s the latest photographer to sign with Invision, the multimedia entertainment agency owned by The Associated Press in partnership with its member photographers.

Charbonneau, a native of Montreal, was discovered at age 16 by Alan Berliner after coming down from Canada to attend college. The rest is Berliner Photography, WireImage and now, Invision history:

Charbonneau’s addition builds on Invision’s growing line-up of top-tier photographers, which includes John Shearer, Jon Furniss, Jordan Strauss, Matt Sayles, Todd Williamson, Casey Rodgers, Victoria Will, Evan Agostini and Chris Pizzello.

Atop Mulholland Drive, Reporter’s Assignment Starts with a Charlie Sheen Dotted Line

Even though Charlie Sheen has mercifully stopped making boastful “tiger blood” DNA claims, those three initials are still part of his Mulholland Drive gated community make-up. Only now, they’ve been re-arranged to spell NDA.

We know this because Karina Longworth leads off her fun house-call LA Weekly cover story with a reminder that celebs like Sheen are doing all they can to prevent a triggering of the TMZ coffers. With, in the reformed actor’s case, a little help from seasoned entertainment PR pro Larry Solters. From Longworth’s article:

I am intercepted in Sheen’s driveway by a security guard, a friendly, not-intimidatingly-large man who asks me to come with him into the garage to sign a non-disclosure agreement.

This is a first for me. I scan the five pages of legalese, in which the undersigned — me — is referred to as “the Employee.” To what extent, I wonder, will signing this document impede my ability to do my actual job of interviewing Sheen and his childhood friend, Roman Coppola, about their new movie, A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III?

Film Critic Elvis Mitchell on That Joaquin Phoenix Interview

In the October issue of Interview magazine, Joaquin Phoenix made headlines when he told film curator and journalist Elvis Mitchell that the awards season is “total, utter bullsh*t.”

However, that statement was the least interesting part of the interview according to Mitchell.

“There is a pretty lengthy part of the conversation that is about race, which I thought was as worthy if not more so as to what he was saying about awards season,” Mitchell said in the latest installment of Mediabistro’s So What Do You Do series.

“That he walked away from a movie because he wasn’t happy with the way it was being handled, and he thought there was this inertia that plays on this really antiquated attitude towards people of color in the movies. And so far as I can see, almost nobody picked that up. I thought that would have been the thing that had people really jumping.”

Read more in So What Do You Do, Elvis Mitchell, Film Critic and Host of KCRW’s “The Treatment”?

Sir Anthony Hopkins Slams Oscar Season Sycophants

At this rate, AMPAS might soon want to add a new sideline, online category to go along with the annual Academy Awards ceremonies – Best Insult.

First came Joaquin Phoenix’s masterful summation of the inanity of film awards season in Interview magazine. Now, courtesy of Huffington Post Entertainment editor Christopher Rosen, it’s Sir Anthony Hopkins’ turn. The star of Hitchcock ended his recent via-telephone-from-London conversation with Rosen at the New York press junket for that film with some choice observations about the worst aspect of film awards season:

“People go out of their way to flatter the [Oscar] nominating body and I think it’s kind of disgusting… You know, kissing the backside of the authorities that can make or break it; I can’t stand all that. I find it nauseating to watch and I think it’s disgusting to behold. People groveling around and kissing the backsides of famous producers and all that. It makes me want to throw up, it really does. It’s sick-making.”

Joaquin Phoenix’s Monumental Montgomery Clift Mash-Up

When Quentin Tarantino was doing press for Inglorious Basterds, he was asked by a reporter what films or filmmaker would inspire him today if he was just starting out in the business. He answered Paul Thomas Anderson, writer-director of The Master, opening Friday in LA and New York:

“We’re really good friends and we have a very kind of artist romantic relationship. I feel I’m Marlon Brando to his Montgomery Clift. But there is a reality. Brando was better because Clift was out there. Same thing, Clift was better because he knew f*ckin’ Brando was already there, all right?”

In Anderson’s The Master, Joaquin Phoenix is one part Brando and four parts Clift. The actor’s colossal portrayal of Freddie Quell, a man who quite literally is fighting at every moment to quell his personal demons, ranks as the first performance in a very long time to recall the on-screen syncopated beats and off-screen tortured genius of an actor who had his own fair share of namesake films (The Search, The Heiress, The Defector).

The Year’s Worst Movie Title

Like most sane moviegoers, Entertainment Weekly writer Clark Collis initially reacted to news of a new Uwe Boll film called Blubberella the same way he would to the prospect of a Joaquin Phoenix documentary. But it turns out a plan by the “craptastic filmmaker” to make a fat female superhero tale with Lindsay Hollister is dead serious.

Collis is uniquely qualified when it comes to the writing transom of EW on Uwe. Back in 2006, the journalist was deemed a “p*ssy” by the filmmaker after being ordered to abandon the idea of participating in the 2006 critics-vs.-Boll boxing match extravaganza known as “Raging Boll.”

Yawn, That Joaquin Phoenix Doc is a Hoax

So Joaquin Phoenix and Casey Affleck spent two years pretending Phoenix was having a meltdown? You mean the brother of River Phoenix who died of a drug overdose in a gutter on Sunset in ’93? You mean the guy who was born in the same cult as Ricky Rodriguez who committed a murder/suicide in 2005?! Like it’s all so far fetched. The more INTERESTING documentary would have been a guy in Phoenix’s circumstance not losing his mind.

NY Times writes:

Speaking of conflict – the story (as of this posting) is no where on the LA Times today. Lots of stuff about Joaquin Phoenix though.

He didn’t like last night’s Oscars:

From Jackman’s strangely self-conscious low-rent opening musical number to Ben Stiller‘s very inside-the-Beltway spoof of Joaquin Phoenix‘s recent appearance on David Letterman‘s late-night show, the awards had a tone problem–they tried to be something for everyone, coming off like a movie script that had its edginess and guts airbrushed out by too many studio notes. It was hard to find any focused narrative for the awards, which were busy veering wildly from making fun of serious movies (mocking “The Reader,” for example) to being entirely too reverential about the past, treating a banal montage of supporting actress “thank you” speeches as if they were lost outtakes from “Citizen Kane.”

Which has lead to a bunch of comments panning his panning.

Did he get it wrong? Does it matter? Is there such a thing as ‘wrong’ criticism of pop culture events? Do comments at major newspapers make being a critic suck? Shouldn’t being an object of internet flames pay better?

Go on discuss…

Now We’ll Coin the Phrase ‘Joaquin Through an Interview’

As soon as this happened we started getting emails from people sending us this clip.

It’s a weird interview. Joaquin Phoenix is clearly on something. Prompting David Letterman to say, “Joaquin, I’m sorry you couldn’t be here tonight.”

Seeing someone high doesn’t make us nervous – it’s seeing someone who’s brother over-dosed in the street and who was partly raised in a cult that has seen its second generations drop like flies, that makes us cringe.

Did we say ‘cringe’? We mean wince.

Phoenix Says It Again — I’m Leaving Movies For Music

Joaquin Phoenix, if anyone didn’t hear him the first time, is making it clear that he’s had enough of the film biz
.

The Oscar-winning star of such films as “Gladiator,” “To Die For” and “Walk the Line” told Associated Press (this after, dumping it all on Extra last week) that he’s out and he’s in with music. He said he wants to use the musical aptitude he developed while learning to be Johnny Cash.

Phoenix will last be seen in “Two Lovers” opposite Gwyneth Paltrow.
