Studio City Freelancer Among This Year’s S.I. Newhouse Finalists

Remember all that business last spring about The Hobbit’s 48-frames-per-second technology? Among the reporters covering the topic at that time was Studio City-based freelance writer Hugh Hart for Wired magazine.

While Peter Jackson’s 48-fps experiment didn’t exactly set the movie business on fire, it has paved the way for Hart to travel this summer to New York City for the S.I. Newhouse School Mirror Awards, which honor the best reporting about digital media. His Wired feature is a nominee in the Best Single Article category alongside The Huffington Post’s Michael Calderone, Media Matters’ Joe Strupp and three others.

Hart did a great job in the Wired piece of framing the historical Hollywood context, moving in his first two paragraphs from a current studio to Thomas Alva Edison circa 1890. The reporter also landed the holy grail for this sort of piece – an interview with James Cameron. (Hart also spoke with visual effects pioneer Douglas Trumbull and several others.)

In San Diego, Tis’ the Season for Daily Newspaper Melancholy

Among those chiming in are New York Times media columnist David Carr, KPBS director of news and editorial strategy Suzanne Marmion, fired U-T sports reporter Tim Sullivan and an anonymous current employee:

“Saying you are going to be a cheerleader for business… goes against everything we have been taught and trained as journalists,” said one current U-T San Diego staffer who requested anonymity. “A lot of people have rolled their eyes at the front page editorials that have run… The quality of the paper is less because there’s more fluff in the paper, an emphasis on running more society photos and celebrity photos. That space could be better used on actual news and information.”

Happy Monday! Someone got a job.

MMFA reports:

Today, Media Matters for America announced the hiring of Joe Strupp as Investigative Reporter and Senior Editor.
E&P is Back, Kind Of, Top Editors Out

We were a little premature in our elation yesterday that Editor & Publisher resumed publishing the 126 year old trade. Yes, they are back. But the new E&P is a clone of what existed last month. Editor-in-Chief Greg Mitchell is gone as is Joe Strupp.

The above tweet is from Editor of Mother Jones Clara Jeffery and she sums it up pretty well.

Mitchell’s announced this fact via Twitter:

If you missed last nite: E&P is back but I am out, as is the great @JoeStrupp.

Joe Strupp tweeted:

E&P is sold, but I am not with it. Not the right fit for me. Weighing other options. See my resume at www.joestrupp.com

We wish Greg and Joe a short job hunt. Bummer.

The next pit stop on the Editor & Publisher saga is a neat little Blogger blog called E&P in Exile.

On the side bar, skimming, we thought it said, “Find Us A Home.” It’s worse than that, it says, “Find Us At Home.” Under which are the names: Greg Mitchell, Shawn Moynihan, Jim Rosenberg, Joe Strupp, Jennifer Saba, Mark Fitzgerald, Reiko Matsuo and Charles McKeown .
Instant Op/Ed Coming Soon

E&P’s Joe Strupp has a piece about how the NYT is making plans to do an instant op/ed…or at least a quicker one.

“Our Op-Ed now is very rapid response, but it is at the most the next day,” said Andrew Rosenthal. “We are looking at a way to take advantage of the expandability of the Internet, the back and forth of it and the instantaneous nature of the Internet. Taking ideas that have existed in Op-Ed form and giving them a robust position online.”

Rosenthal said three editors, among them former editorial writers, are teaming up with a Web producer to oversee the initiative. He said the team is gathering a list of numerous experts on a variety of issues to be ready to provide quick comments, essays and columns on issues or stories that come up in the news. He said the idea is to have a group that provides opinions soon after news occurs, with a solid Web space dedicated to them.

“One of them could write a piece arguing that something is a terrible idea, then another could argue that it is a great idea and a third could react to those,” Rosenthal explained. “Readers could also comment, as they do now.”

Doesn’t this sound like CNN Debate Audience Reaction Meter in print? Does everything have to be instant? Isn’t the op/ed page one of the last places (sometime) thoughtful analysis gets featured?

Here’s our instant reaction – we hate it.

Next Week’s RNC: Perfect Storm?

Stuart Shepard of Focus on the Family made a “Praying for Rain” youtube video. He asked his followers(?) to pray for rain at Mile High Stadium during Barack Obama’s acceptance speech because he disagrees with his politics. “If God decides that rain of biblical proportions would be a good and proper meteorological condition for that evening,” He says on the video. “We’ll see it and we’ll say that it is good.”

Yeah, Focus on the Family should try focusing on their family and retire from rain dancing. Because it’s 80 degrees and sunny in Denver today.

Either way it makes Stuart Shepard look like an ass.

Anyway, Joe Strupp at E&P brings us a story of the Times-Picayune looking at the three year anniversary of Katrina tomorrow while bracing for Gustav.

“Keeping a watchful eye on Gustav has caused people to be less-conscious of the anniversary than they would have been,” Peter Kovacs said. “There is a sort of nervousness of ‘no, not again’.”

Reuters reports that some New Orleans residents may get evacuations orders by tomorrow. The storm could hit the gulf coast by Monday. That would make it make land fall the first day of the Republican National Convention.

Ouch.

O.J. Simpson Weighs in on Sensationalist News Coverage

O.J. Simpson complains that celebrity news coverage is worse than ever, says Joe Strupp in Editor & Publisher. Working on a story about the AP reporter, Linda Deutsch, Strupp had called Simpson for a comment about her. He got an earful about the media in general.

Simpson deplores the media circus around Paris Hilton, et al, doesn’t think he’s newsworthy, but revealed this:

Simpson said he recently agreed to a rare interview with Marquez Productions of Orlando, Fla. for a documentary on media coverage because he wanted to discuss what he perceived as inaccuracies and sensationalism.
