Although LA’s NBC affiliate did extremely well at this weekend’s Golden Mike Awards, sweeping the Division A newscast categories, it’s not quite as supreme in the local ratings books. Today, as part of some sweeping changes instituted by new president and general manager Steve Carlston, the channel has officially rebranded itself as NBC4 Southern California.

But that’s not all. Per a report in the LA Times by Greg Braxton, there’s also a fancy new $150,000 82-inch in-studio TV screen and other capital improvements:

The station is also beefing up its investigative unit, headed by reporters Joel Grover and Ana Garcia; replaced and upgraded 13 news vehicles in its fleet with HD design; and added two satellite trucks.

Local TV news reports anchoring a Sweeps month like November often smack of desperate sensationalism. A salacious angle is exploited, with screaming teaser headlines followed by a sometimes disappointing reveal.

But there’s none of that polluting Joel Grover‘s account of a church-going OC housewife. After her husband became terminally ill, the mother of two stumbled into ferrying bricks of cocaine from LA to New Orleans, stuffing the contraband in her commercial airline luggage and wrapping the kilos with sheets of fabric softener.

Andrew Bynum NBC LA ‘Scoop’ Derided by Media Observers

LA Lakers center Andrew Bynum is once again at the center of a media firestorm for elbowing his way into the territory of the less physically fortunate. Only this time, it’s not so much Bynum’s careless caught-on-camera violation that is being criticized but rather the tone of NBC LA staffer Joel Grover‘s exclusive report.

Larry Brown of the influential blog Larry Brown Sports says Grover is the real fool here for making such a big deal out of Bynum being filmed parking in a handicap parking spot in Westchester. His sentiments have been echoed by Ben Axelrod at SportsGrid.com and several other bloggers. Writes Brown:

Bynum is the same guy who rehabbed a knee injury by partying at the Playboy Mansion, and the same guy who delayed his knee surgery to attend the World Cup. It’s not as if he’s demonstrated sound judgment in the past.

The Enterprise Report Takes on Joel Grover

Joel Grover from KNBC-TV won another IRE (Investigative Reporters and Editors) award this weekend. Eric Longabardi from TheEnterpriseReport posted some investigative nuggets of this own.

Longabardi has a couple of videos of Grover, one where he’s threatening his subject with calling the cops unless he talks to him. Another where the briber admits CBS/Grover gave him the money to make a pay off.
