To determine this, I combed through the hundreds of blogs at the top newspaper sites and calculated each of their Technorati rankings. A Technorati ranking is based on the number of inbound links from separate blogs in a six-month period, and is a decent indicator of a blog’s popularity. Once I determined the rankings, I ordered them from popular to least popular. Below, you will find the 50 most popular newspaper blogs.

LA Times has nine in the top 50. In the top half are Andrew Malcolm and Johanna Neuman at Top of the Ticket, group blog LA Now, Alana Semuels, Alex Pham, Chris Gaither, David Sarno, Jessica Guynn, Jim Puzzanghera, Jon Healey, Mark Milian, Michelle Maltaisare at Technology and Sal Morgan and Elizabeth Snead at Dish Rag. Now when you see these people at cocktail parties you can intro them as a ‘high ranking blogger’ and see if they won’t try and correct you. Email us if they do.

The unsurpassed anonymous source that brought down the Nixon administration and fueled vigorous debate for decades as to his true identity, has died. Mark Felt, the FBI’s ‘number two’ man, a protege of J. Edgar Hoover, gave information to young WaPo scribes Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein about the break-in at the Democratic National Committee headquarters at the Watergate complex.

Woodward always said that the identity of Deep Throat would not be known until after he died. Our money was on it being Pat Buchanan (but put that in the pile of things we’ve been wrong about). But in 2005 – they let the proverbial cat out of the bag and for a month all we could read about in the newspapers were the phrases ‘deep throat’ and ‘number two man’.

On a lame note, the LAT obit was written by recently laid off staffer Johanna Neuman. Cough.

If Us Weekly Ran The Show: No offense to Johanna Neuman, who did the best she could using – you know – ethics in reporting this piece about the private meeting between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama at Sen. Dianne Feinstein‘s house, but if an Us Weekly reporter had been on the story, we’d know a helluva lot more about that meeting than the fact that the two candidates drank water and shared a laugh.
