James Garner is His Own Worst Critic

Like most actors, James Garner is not particularly fond of a lot of his work. As he tells CBS News ahead of tomorrow’s arrival of his autobiography The Garner Files, he rates only two of his big screen efforts as being excellent.

What is atypical however is the way the 83-year-old actor and co-author Jon Winokur have chosen to convey this information. As New York Post movie critic Lou Lumenick was one of the first to note, Garner has basically gone Leonard Maltin on himself:

This is the first movie star biography I’ve seen where an actor provides capsule reviews of all his movies. Even more unusually, Garner rates all but one of them from zero to five stars. The ones he rates most highly are The Americanization of Emily (1964) and The Notebook (2004) with five stars…

Bernie Brillstein Dies at 77

Bernie Brillstein, one of the premiere manager/producers in the industry and the orchestrator behind the careers of John Belushi, Jim Henson and a slew of ‘Saturday Night Live’ stars, died this week from complications stemming from double-bypass heart surgery in February.

Brillstein ran the most successful management company in Hollywood in the 1980s and ’90s, repping such stars as Lorne Michaels, Gilda Radner, Dan Aykroyd, Brad Pitt, Adam Sandler, Geena Davis, Martin Short, Jim Belushi, Dabney Coleman, Dana Carvey, Dennis Miller, Nicolas Cage, Rob Lowe and Jay Tarses.Brillstein partnered with Brad Grey in 1991. After producing such shows with Brillstein as “The Sopranos,” “Just Shoot Me,” “NewsRadio” and “Politically Incorrect with Bill Maher.” Grey went on to become the chairman and CEO for Paramount Pictures.

Brillstein was an outgoing, avuncular Santa Clause type who will be sorely missed.

Movies We’d Love to See, But Never Will: Premiere.Com Explains

Premiere.com takes a clever step away from yapping about the summer blockbusters and offers 20 Movies Not Coming Soon to a Theater Near You. Stephen Saito brings us up to speed on

Phil Spector bio-pic starring Tom Cruise. No matter what the jury outcome, this project is DOA.

What Makes Sammy Run? with Ben Stiller. Stiller bought the book rights, wrote a script with Jerry Stahl, and now he’s too busy?

A Confederacy of Dunces with Will Farrell. John Belushi was the original star, which tells you how long this has been kicking around.

Saito’s favorite is Confederacy, even though he knows it’s not a popular choice.
