Peter Morgan — whose “Frost/Nixon” is not only filling theaters around the country but is in line for plenty in the statuette department (as in Golden Globes and Oscars) — is setting up his next politco project which looks to create (or re-create, as it were) the “Special Relationship” between former British Prime Minister Tony Blair and departing U.S. President George Bush.

Variety reported on what will be the third film by Morgan about Blair. Previously, he had written “The Deal” about Blair’s stratospheric rise in British politics, followed by “The Queen” about the thorny relationship with Queen Elizabeth II.

Without trying to be too much like Oliver Stone, Morgan takes on Brit politics without the sledgehammer approach that Stone is so often fond of when it comes to things political.

Morgan will rely on actor Michael Sheen, who is gaining amazing fame as David Frost in “Frost/Nixon, to take on the Blair role. He played Blair in both earlier incarnates about the PM.

Bush is still a question mark. But Morgan, as he’s directing as well, could always at least approach Josh Brolin, who did stellar work as Bush in Stone’s “W.”

Though they’re sometimes reduced to thumbs up/thumbs down criticism, the country’s major broadcast critics are always keen to be heard as “Milk” and “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” both earned eight nominations for the 14th Broadcast Film Critics Assn.’s Critics Choice Awards, Variety says.

Both were among the 10 films named for best picture. “Milk,” which got off to a strong platform start last month, also picked up key nominations for lead actor Sean Penn, supporting co-stars James Franco and Josh Brolin, and director Gus Van Sant. “Button,” which opens Christmas Day, drew mentions for actor Brad Pitt, actress Cate Blanchett and supporting actress Taraji P. Henson.

Other titles nommed for picture were “Changeling,” “The Dark Knight,” “Doubt,” “Frost/Nixon,” “The Reader,” “Slumdog Millionaire,” “Wall-E” and “The Wrestler.”

As we have previously reported, Sarah Palin will be on Saturday Night Live this weekend. Rumor is she’ll spoof Tina Fey. She’s already spoofed the veep race…Palin not Fey.

Anyway, Politico’s Jonathon Martin points out that Josh Brolin who plays George W. Bush will be hosting this week. Which could make it interesting.

Spoofing the spoofs seems to be a theme.

The 12th annual Hollywood Film Festival will dole out the “Hollywood Career Achievement” award to Dustin Hoffman, the “Hollywood Actor of the Year” to Josh Brolin and “Hollywood Actress of the Year” to Kristin Scott Thomas.

“It is a privilege to honor and to celebrate Dustin Hoffman’s extraordinary talent and remarkable career, as well as the exemplary work of actor Josh Brolin and actress Kristin Scott Thomas,” said Carlos de Abreu, Founder and Executive Director of the Hollywood Film Festival.

Winners will all receive their plaudits at the fest’s gala ceremony Aug. 27 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills.
