Kevin Bacon’s Five Degrees of LA Westside Separation

The good folks at KFI’s Tim Conway Jr. have an expression they like to use whenever a big compliment is bandied about on-air. The rallying cry is pronounced “Huuuuge shout out” and hash-tagged #hugeshoutout.

In the latest installment of Los Angeles magazine’s celebrity “LA Story” feature to go online, actor Kevin Bacon adds his #hso honors to the well-praised burgh of Los Feliz. His as-told-to is also notable for the fact that within Tinseltown, home-to-home migrations for actors and actor-couples usually progress in the opposite compass direction:

I don’t want to be snobbish about the westside, but as we started to move east over the years – from Point Dume to Santa Monica to Brentwood to Larchmont to Los Feliz – we felt more and more at home. We love Griffith Park now as much as we love Central Park. Our place in LA honestly feels to us like a vacation almost. We adore it.

Variety Film Exclusives Muffled by Paywall

From what we can tell, Showblitz.com, the much ballyhooed window into what’s being published daily behind the Variety.com paywall, is not yet indexed on Google News. Which is a shame, because the trade publication has been doing a great job recently of landing film news exclusives.

Unlike Deadline.com, the Hollywood Reporter and TheWrap, where Variety film editor Josh Dickey used to work, the 106-year-old outlet (!) receives far fewer Internet “hat tips” and URL-linked rewrites, because most third-party sites are unwilling to point to a URL that requires membership. And until the entertainment journalism community at large starts getting blasted with Google News alerts, not too many seem willing to pay attention to Showblitz.

Trailer For the Footloose Remake Lands Online

The remake appears to have slightly more hip-hop than the 1984 version:

The new Footloose stars Dennis Quaid as the preacher man, Julianne Hough of Dancing With the Stars as his daughter, and newcomer Kenny Wormald in the role made famous by Kevin Bacon. The film opens October 14.

Hey, The Wrap, If Everybody is an Icon Then No One Is

A famous person’s death is sad, we’re not debating that. Someone dying of a drug overdose at 38 is sad. Someone dying at 38 is sad. So no need to be hyperbolic. Corey Haim was an actor and maybe a teen star, but there’s no way he was an “icon.” Nope. Michael Jackson was an icon. Elvis was an icon. Icons get put on postage stamps. Corey Haim was an actor.

Bacon/Sedgwick The Latest Madoff Victims

Kevin Bacon and wife Kyra Sedgwick (who is now with “The Closer” definitely the bread-winner in that household) were taken by Bernie Madoff and his $50 billion Wall Street swindle, New York mag reports.

They join an illustrious list of such Hollywood royalty as Steven Spielberg and Jeffrey Katzenberg.

But FBLA can’t figure out how much BacWick might have lost. Maybe “The Closer” is taking off. We know it’s not $50 billion. “The Closer” ratings aren’t that good.

LAT In 90 Seconds

A John Horn piece proclaims that in the recent agency swapping, “Endeavor was … the biggest net winner by a wide margin, while UTA was seen as taking the toughest hit to its much-heralded comedy business. No one believes CAA has lost its grip as the town’s dominant deal maker.”

<strike>Unemployed</strike> Actors Still Get A Say: SAG rejected a petition by A-listers like Kevin Bacon, Glenn Close and Ben Affleck that would allow only working actors to vote in upcoming contract negotiations. Most of the guild’s 120,000 members don’t work regularly. Unless you count Bennigan’s as work. And we do.
