KFI traffic reporter Mike Nolan was injured in a plane crash on Friday evening in Corona and was hospitalized in serious condition.

His Cessna 182 single-engine airplane lost power and crashed in a field near the Corona Municipal Airport. The crash left 3,545 Edison customers without power as the plane knocked out several power lines.

Nolan was traveling with a student pilot at the time — reportedly the nephew of KOST 103.5 program director Stella Prado. According to Neil Saavedra of KFI, Nolan “suffered several injuries, including  lacerations, fractured ribs and a broken collar bone.” He was expected to be released from the hospital over the weekend.

After much uproar by the Black Media Alliance for the lack of minority hosts on KFI AM 640, the talk radio station announced two new weekend programs featuring two minority hosts from sister Clear Channel station KTLK.

Producer and radio host Morris O’Kelly will host a new show on Saturdays from 6-8:00 p.m. while David Cruz will be on the airwaves Sunday from 6-8:00 p.m. Both shows will begin this weekend.

According to KFI, the new shows will “discuss, dissect and investigate the important, often controversial issues of the day through the eyes of an eclectic collection of Southern California residents, urbanites and suburbanites, young and old, across race, gender and the political spectrum.”

A coalition of Black radio broadcasters, journalists and community leaders met with KFI’s John Kobylt and Ken Chiampou over their comments regarding the late Whitney Houston.

The main concern was the lack of diversity on the KFI airwaves and newsroom. “KFI has 14 shows, and 13 of them are hosted by white males,” activist Jasmyne Cannick said. “There are no blacks in their newsroom. This fosters an environment where negative comments can happen. And they are not living up to [parent company] Clear Channel’s statement of a commitment to diversity.”

KFI’s John Kobylt and Ken Chiampou return Monday afternoon following a 10-day suspension for their derogatory comments towards the late Whitney Houston.

The general consensus is split on whether John and Ken should have been suspended for their comments in the first place.

Regardless, I plan on listening to the first segment to see if they discuss their suspension.

The Truth About Money with Ric Edelman is headed to Los Angeles.

The nationally syndicated weekly financial radio show will debut Feb. 26  and can be heard Sundays from 2-4 p.m on KFI 640AM.

Financial advisor Ric Edelman is joined on-air by advisors Brandon Corso and Anderson Wozny (known on-air as Branderson). Edelman has provided financial advice for 25 years and his firm, Edelman Financial Services, manages $7.3 billion for more than 16,000 clients.

KTLA entertainment anchor Sam Rubin delivered a wonderful tw0-minute analysis of KFI’s suspension of Ken Chiampou and John Kobylt for their insensitive comments towards the late Whitney Houston.

In what looks like a direct response to the John and Ken controversy from last September, Clear Channel has hired former NBC4 anchor David Cruz to host a daily afternoon talk show on KTLK (1150-AM) from 3-6 p.m.

The David Cruz Show starts Monday and will air at the same time as John and Ken on KFI.

“This is a fresh new look at Southern California through the eyes of a well-known, veteran network television and radio journalist very familiar with the Latino community in the nation’s second-largest market,” Clear Channel Radio Los Angeles president Greg Ashlock said in a statement.

Cruz spent 12 years at NBC4 as a news anchor and reporter, winning both National and Regional Emmy Awards.

Neil Saavedra, KFI’s (640 AM) marketing director and producer of “The Jesus Christ Show,” will host a new food show starting on Jan. 7 titled “The Fork Report.”

The show, from 2-4 p.m., will focus on local restaurants, kitchen gadgets, recalls, new products, and interviews with chefs, according to Gary Lycan of the Orange County Register.

“People who love food will love this show and people who don’t love food, well, who cares what they think,” Saavedra told Lycan.

Foodies now have a second show to listen to on Saturdays after KCRW’s “Good Food,” hosted by Evan Kleiman at 11 a.m.

Earlier this week, Terri-Rae Elmer signed off from KFI 640 AM after 28 years at the station, leaving many to wonder where she was headed.

Well, Elmer left the station for a new morning show gig (5 a.m. to 9 a.m) with Doug McIntyre on KABC 790 AM called McIntyre in the Morning.

McIntyre and Elmer are replacing Peter Tilden‘s morning show, effective Jan. 3. The Daily News columnist left KABC in 2009 to host the syndicated Red Eye Radio.

“I’m excited to return to the morning drive with leading radio station, KABC,” said McIntyre in a statement. “I look forward to keeping my audience informed and entertained as they wake up with me each morning.”

KLOS-FM disc jockey Jim Ladd was one of a dozen employees abruptly laid off by Cumulus Media last week.

With no heads up from management, it appeared Ladd wouldn’t get a chance to say goodbye to his fans. But Gary Lycan of The Orange County Register reports Ladd will fill in for Lisa Ann Walter on Saturday, Nov. 5 from 4 p.m.-7 p.m.

“(KFI) Program Director Robin Bertolucci was very kind and asked me to do a show because I didn’t have a chance to say goodbye to my audience. I’m looking forward to it,” Ladd told Lycan via e-mail.

Kudos to KFI for doing the right thing and giving Ladd an outlet to conduct a proper farewell.
