Star‘s James Heidenry: ‘Us Weekly is the biggest culprit of hypocrisy’

In Mediabistro’s latest So What Do You Do? interview, Star editor-in-chief James Heidenry tackles his newsstand nemeses head-on, calling People and Us Weekly “the mouthpiece of celebrity publicists” – and he didn’t mean that in a positive way.

Some of his other beefs with the mags? They pay celebrities for stories but don’t admit it, and they get most of their biggest “scoops” right from the pages of Star.

“Even Bonnie Fuller, who used to run Star magazine, doesn’t give us credit at HollywoodlLife.com. But Us Weekly, I think, is the biggest culprit of hypocrisy,” Heidenry said. “Us Weekly has Kim [Kardashian] on the cover saying ‘Don’t Call Me Fat,’ and when you open up the issue, it points out our cover and says ‘Look how these tabloids are making fun of her’ when they are doing it on the cover themselves — not making fun of her, but using Kim’s pregnancy to sell magazines and trying to take a holier-than-thou attitude. To me, it was just a lack of respect for their readers.”

For more of Heidenry’s thoughts on the competition plus what he looks for L.A. reporters, read So What Do You Do, James Heidenry, Editor-in-Chief of Star?

Celeb Boutique Didn’t Get the Memo About Shooting

Well, this is awkward.

Shopping website Celeb Boutique somehow missed the tweets, text alerts and breaking news headlines on Friday morning regarding the shooting in Aurora, Colorado and decided to troll for customers on Twitter.

(And of course Kim Kardashian was the celeb name they dropped. Of course.)

Following instant outrage from their Twitter followers, they tweeted the following apology:

We are incredibly sorry for our tweet about Aurora – Our PR is NOT US based and had not checked the reason for the trend, at that time our social media was totally UNAWARE of the situation and simply thought it was another trending topic – we have removed the very insensitive tweet and will of course take more care in future to look into what we say in our tweets. Again we do apologise for any offense caused this was not intentional & will not occur again. Our most sincere apologies for both the tweet and situation.

Damn you, outsourcing.

Pitch ‘Girlfriend Commentary’ to Clutch

Digital magazine Clutch prides itself on providing information and community for African-American young women. And, with 90 percent of its content penned by outside contributors, the freelance-friendly site is looking for pitches from the readers who know it best.

“We love having voices of people who actually read the site, from actual Clutchettes,” said founder and editorial director Deanna Sutton.

Fresh off a redesign that focuses on one feature daily, the site has grown by leaps and bounds, but Sutton said she’s still very attuned to what will appeal to her target audience. ” I know I can’t talk about Kim Kardashian. I know I can’t talk about [model] Amber Rose. There are certain topics that are going to cause a fight if we try to go there.” So, Clutch focuses instead on the 1,000,000,001 other subjects that are relevant to readers’ lives.

Ronda Rousey is Ready to Beat Up Kim Kardashian

Meet Ronda Rousey, Strikeforce women’s bantamweight champion and my new hero.

The 25-year-old MMA star and ESPN the Magazine nude cover girl took to the red carpet earlier this week and called out Kim Kardashian.

(The original video was pulled but Rousey had a fantastic interview on TMZ Live on Thursday.)

Finally, someone not afraid to speak their mind about a Kardashian. If you haven’t seen Rousey in the ring, she would give Kanye West a run for his money.

Kardashians Producer Knew Marriage Wouldn’t Last

When Kim Kardashian first started seeing wedding bells with Kris Humphries, producer Jonathan Murray didn’t bat an eyelash — because he knew it wouldn’t last.

“With Kim and her marriage, she showed up for Kourtney and Kim Take New York a week after the honeymoon, and we just documented what happened,” the executive producer of Keeping Up With the Kardashians said in mediabistro.com’s So What Do You Do? interview, “and it was pretty clear that these two people maybe weren’t exactly right for each other, that they didn’t have as much going for them as a couple as they thought they had when they entered the relationship.”

Murray, whose Bunim-Murray Productions also created The Real World, Road Rules and Bad Girls Club, also debunked rumors that his team encouraged the two to get hitched. “Kim did not seek us out as to who she should marry, nor should she. ”

Think you’ve got what it takes to be a reality TV producer, read the full interview for Murray’s tips on breaking in.

WATCH: Kim Kardashian PSA About the Armenian Genocide

Reality TV superstar Kim Kardashian filmed a public service announcement about the Armenian genocide for the city of Glendale’s official commemoration of the tragedy. During the genocide, which lasted from 1915-1923, 1.5 million Armenians were killed. Watching Kardashian struggle to read the cue cards is a little tedious, but it’s still a worthy history lesson.

Glendale Bear to Challenge Kim Kardashian for Mayor of Glendale

Looks like Kim Kardashian already has a challenger for the 2017 Glendale mayoral election. Gotta be honest, this Fishie is pretty torn. On the one hand, as someone who lives in Glendale, the mere mention of Mayor Kardashian has me pricing moving trucks. And our tweeting bear is beloved.

On the other hand, as someone who writes for the Glendale News-Press on occasion, the thought of Mayor Kardashian fills me with the kind of journalistic glee that could only be trumped by Mayor Emma Watson. (Hermione!) Plus the inevitable influx of NBA and hip-hop stars to our fair city under Mayor Kardashian would probably make the nightlife more interesting. Doesn’t riding the fake Americana trolley with Kanye sound fun?

Both candidates have five years to win me over–only six months more than our current presidential election cycle. I’m hoping for some face time with the bear at Billy’s. That is if he’s not too hung over from his recent meatball and tranquilizer binge.

Kim Kardashian Running for Mayor of Glendale?

Kim Kardashian Running for Mayor of Glendale?

Heads up, Glendale residents.

Kim Kardashian wants to be your mayor in 2017.

The reality star said on a new clip from E!’s Khloe & Lamar that she has decided to run for mayor of the Armenian suburb in five years.

The Los Angeles Times saved Kardashian the headache of finding out the requirements by speaking with a Glendale city official, who explains that the city doesn’t have traditional mayor:

City Clerk Ardashes Kassakhian clarified that a candidate must be a registered voter in Glendale, residing in the city 90 days prior to the election. He said there was no requirement on a candidate’s length of residency and said anyone seeking elected office must collect 100 endorsement signatures.

Geena Davis Stirs Things Up in Seattle

Actress turned media expert Geena Davis spoke to a pair of audiences in Seattle on Monday. The first, on the campus of Microsoft, was made up mostly of men; the second, at Seattle Town Hall, consisted largely of women.

Why this is relevant is that it provided a perfect visual representation of the male-female divide upon which Davis’ Institute of Gender in Media is pinned. During her second evening appearance, the Oscar winner suggested that the world is due for a resurgence of the women’s movement, although a new word may be in order. Per a report by KPLU Tacoma public radio‘s Tom Paulson:

Many noted that the word ‘feminist’ has become tainted. Davis got a laugh when she recalled the reaction she got from critics and many in the public when she described one of her other movies about women baseball players, A League of Their Own, as a feminist movie.

Kardashians Launching New Glossy Mag?

The New York Post seems to think so. Sources tell the paper the Kardashians are working on a deal with American Media Inc., which publishes The National Enquirer, to launch a new glossy mag entirely devoted to all things Kardashian. Kim Kardashian already runs a blog devoted to news of herself. So a new mag isn’t exactly a stretch.

Normally we’d be thrilled to hear word of a potential print launch…

You know what. Fuck it. We’re still thrilled. Elated even. Seems like half the entertainment stories we read these days are about the Kardashians anyway. Maybe this new mag will suck up all the Kardashian news and free up some space for real arts and culture coverage elsewhere.
