Everything you always wanted to know but were afraid to ask about Mike Tyson and Ken Jeong’s stellar supporting work in The Hangover can be savored this week in The Hollywood Reporter. In an ingenious editorial move, executive editor Matthew Belloni and senior TV writer Lacey Rose chucked the usual script for sequel promotion and orchestrated instead a rollicking oral history of the 2009 R-rated smash that started it all. (The final Part III installment opens in theaters May 24.)

FishbowlLA can never get enough of Jeong’s Mr. Chow. In the article, the actor’s work is fully retraced, from the audition to the origins of some of the most repeated lines to a touching backstory:

JEONG: It was a very magical shoot. My wife was going through breast cancer and chemotherapy at the time. [She recovered.] It was part of the reason I was so unhinged in the character; I think I was working out my own demons. Todd and Bradley were the only people who knew. Hangover got me through the most difficult time in my life.

Lorne Michaels Admits Infamous SNL Eddie Murphy Crack Was a Mistake

On Tuesday, Martin Short interviewed Lorne Michaels. It happened right here in Lalaland at the Beverly Hilton, as part of the Hollywood Radio and Television Society’s ongoing “newsmakers” luncheon series.

Since FishbowlLA will go to its grave wondering how spectacular the 2011 Oscars might have been if Eddie Murphy had remained at the host-helm, we couldn’t help but zero in on the last paragraph of a report by senior Hollywood Reporter TV writer Lacey Rose:

Michaels confessed that he had made that mistake [making fun of one of "his own"] years earlier with former cast member Eddie Murphy, who at that time had had a string of box office disappointments. Though SNL had stayed away from some of Murphy’s more personal stumbles, he and his writers had David Spade take a ["Hollywood Minute"] jab at his professional fumble. “I figured it was kind of a clean hit. I didn’t really think about it; but Eddie did,” he said to big laughs…

Hollywood Reporter Delivers a Leno Lollapalooza

You’d think a guy who took a huge pay cut in 2012 on behalf of one of NBC’s few TV ratings hits would be bullet proof within the network’s executive ranks. But while Matthew Belloni’s Hollywood Reporter cover story about Jay Leno does not pinpoint the two “high-level industry sources” that leaked information to colleague Kim Masters for a March 1 item, the embattled Tonight Show host clearly believes the bleed was carved from the Peacock. Rather than, say, a Big Four talent agency or entertainment attorney’s office.

From Belloni’s piece:

Sources say Leno, when he signed his most recent deal, expected it could be his last at the network. But he is said to have been upset by what he perceived to be an NBC leak to THR and by the prospect of another messy transition that would play out in the press.

Can’t blame (the soon-to-be 63-year-old) Leno for that. No comedian likes to be so consistently heckled, even a road warrior like Leno. The prospect of 16 more months of media-amplified cat calls of “You suck!” is no laughing matter.

Oprah on OWN: ‘I’m Not Doing the Hula Yet…’

Oprah Winfrey adorns one of four different covers for The Hollywood Reporter‘s special year-end double issue hitting newsstands today. She’s part of a compilation of 2012 “Rule Breakers,” the kind of framing and terminology that editorial director Janice Min is an expert at. The content seems just that much more compelling than if it were sitting under a “Top 11″ headline, which is the total number of profiled entities.

A year ago, media critics were writing Oprah Winfrey’s OWN obituary. But with Tyler Perry on the exclusive horizon and Rihanna in the rear-view mirror, the 58-year-old mogul’s conversation with reporters Lacey Rose and Stacey Wilson suggests this holiday season’s New Year’s resolutions will be a little less panicked:

“I’m not doing the hula yet… but compared to a year ago, it feels like a sigh of relief,” says Winfrey between sips of iced tea on her sprawling estate…

Jimmy Kimmel Tops White House and Emmys with Dave

A dream year for Jimmy Kimmel is about to get dreamier.

On top of getting the news that his show will be moving in the New Year to 11:35 p.m. and hosting major powwows on both coasts (White House Correspondents dinner, Primetime Emmys), there’s now this. Per a report by Lacey Rose in The Hollywood Reporter, Kimmel will finally be afforded the opportunity to interview his lifelong idol David Letterman:

Letterman will join Chris Rock, Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert and Tracy Morgan as a guests on Jimmy Kimmel Live when the ABC host brings his late-night show to his hometown of Brooklyn for one week later this month. The move is a monumental one for Kimmel, who grew up wearing a Late Night with David Letterman jacket and would celebrate his birthday with a Late Night cake.

Aaron Sorkin Writers-Firing Story Turns Into Unholy TCA, Twitter Mess

Yesterday at the TCA, The Newsroom writer-creator Aaron Sorkin hung a reporter out to dry. In a fashion so shocking it probably merits serious consideration as a Season Two subplot.

From Washington Post TV writer Lisa de Moraes’ account of the Beverly Hilton HBO proceedings:

Sorkin took a moment to tell the critics that (a) the writing staff on the show had not been fired; and (b) he had not kept on staff an ex-girlfriend — two elements of a story that had been reported somewhere and picked up everywhere, maybe even by some of those in the room.

“Seeing that in print is scaring the hell out of the writing staff,” Sorkin said. “They’re acting very strange. They’re coming to work early, being polite to me, and I want the old gang back. I love the writing staff.”

Shaquille O’Neal Wants Your Funny Internet Video

From Lacey Rose at The Hollywood Reporter comes news of Shaquille O’Neal’s latest creative endeavor. It’s not a TNT sitcom; it’s not a rap album; and it’s not a feature film comedy.

Rather, Shaq has landed a ten-episode order from truTV for a Tosh.0-style clips show tentatively called Upload with Shaquille O’Neal. From Rose’s report:

“Shaquille O’Neal has such a great personality, and he really has a lot of fun with the format and the material in this new series,” said truTV EVP and COO Marc Juris. “This show is going to be a great fit with truTV’s comedic shows like Impractical Jokers and the upcoming Killer Karaoke.”

Lacey Rose Joins The Hollywood Reporter

The Hollywood Reporter is expanding its TV coverage, picking up former Forbes staffer Lacey Rose to become a senior writer assigned to the TV beat. Rose previously covered TV for Forbes and ran the blog Moneywood. At THR, she’ll be writing features, news and analysis both for print and online.

THR has been looking to shore up its television coverage since TV editor Nellie Andreeva took off to Deadline last March. Aside from adding Rose, they poached away the San Francisco Chronicle‘s Tim Goodman to become head TV critic last October.

Brooks Barnes Gets Seacrest Scoop

Just how expansive are the powers of 35-year-old mogul Ryan Seacrest becoming? According to New York Times media reporter Brooks Barnes, the pixie king of all media’s new $60 million contract extension with Clear Channel includes provisions that will give him a level of control over who advertises on his radio shows, as well as permission to squeeze in his own “marketing partners.”

Is this a conflict of interest? No more so really than AT&T handling the phones for American Idol and Seacrest getting a great minutes deal on his iPhone. Barnes has more juicy info about the new deal:

Mr. Seacrest will also create a joint venture with the company to explore the creation of a record label, music publishing business and live concert series, according to the people with knowledge of its details, who spoke on the condition of anonymity.
