Daily Breeze Columnist Gets the Obituary He Never Wanted

There are a lot of wonderful quotes in Larry Altman and Douglas Morino’s tribute to Daily Breeze colleague John Bogert, who passed away over the weekend at age 63 after a battle with cancer. But the comment that stands out is this one:

This obituary, daughter Rachael said, would not have thrilled him. Bogert didn’t much like it when reporters wrote sappy obituaries and portrayed the deceased as “saintly.” He wanted his own obituary, she said, to be honest. “My dad never wanted to come off as a saint,” she said.

And so, Altman and Morino dutifully segue from the praise for a couple of paragraphs, quoting some negative reader comments. It’s rare and in this case fitting to throw in some bitter with the sweeet.

Daily Breeze Murder Story Draws Controversy

Daily Breeze crime reporter Larry Altman just posted an interesting piece illustrating the potential emotional pitfalls of his job. On January 2, Altman wrote a piece about the violent and seemingly random murder of Cristian Alvarez in Wilmington. In the piece, he included what appeared to many to be a throwaway graph about Alvarez’s recent run-in with the law.

“County court records showed Cristy Alvarez was charged in July with burglary and theft. The charges, which stemmed from a Carson sheriff’s station case, were dismissed without prosecution. No other details were available.”

Alvarez’s brother let it be known in the comment section of the piece that he did not appreciate his sister’s relatively innocuous record being dragged into a story about her brutal murder.

“This guy seriously went through her record… Piece of s—. I’m her “brother jonathan” and she is beautifull and the best companion in life i miss my sister cristy. I love u sister see u soon.”

Revered Journalism Professor Jolene Combs Passes Away

She helped shape the minds of many a brand name journalist, including FOX 11′s Lauren Sanchez, ESPN Radio’s Beto Duran, and Washington Post reporter Jason Reid.

Now, some of Jolene Combs‘ former colleagues and students at El Camino College are paying fond tribute in the wake of her death at age 69 from apparent pneumonia complications, as reported last Friday by Daily Breeze reporters Larry Altman (a regular speaker in Combs’ classes) and Douglas Morino (a one-time student). At the heart of Combs’ methodology was a principle that the late George Burns was equally fond of espousing when asked how he could keep going as a comedian–Do what you love to do:

“She really wanted her students to succeed,” said Lori Medigovich, an El Camino journalism professor since 1989. “She wanted them to have a good life and be happy… One of her biggest things was no matter what you do in life, you should love it, embrace it and do your absolute best at it. Whether it was journalism or, as she would say, selling refrigerators.”

Mary Mapes: Citizen Journalist On Media Circus

Mary Mapes, late of CBS News, contrasts the media circus surrounding Paris Hilton with the private funeral of Army Spc. Daniel Cagle.

Larry Altman of the Daily Breeze was also there. His paper covers the funerals of military personnel from the local area, so it makes sense that he’d be there. But why was Mapes there? Did she know Cagle? Or did she have a researcher looking for military funerals near Lynwood?

Mapes makes a perfectly valid point about media priorities and inanities. But Pfc. Cagle, to judge by the online postings, was a young man who was truly valued and respected in a way that Paris Hilton will never know. Not that excuses the media or comforts his family and friends.

If the Hilton coverage is out of control, what about the fuss over a tv series?
