Larry David Recalls the Day Mom Crushed His Journalistic Aspirations

Per a hilarious teaser clip for Current TV’s Friday evening broadcast premiere of Joy Behar’s Comics with Benefits, a Hurricane Sandy fundraiser held on Monday at the 92nd Street YMCA in New York City, Larry David‘s mom did more than curb her enthusiasm when the comedian expressed his young-age professional aspirations.

David recalled on stage with Behar how his journalistic aspirations were ridiculed by his no-nonsense mom. “I said, ‘Ma, I think I want to be a sports announcer when I grow up,’” David remembered. “She said, ‘What makes you think you… you?…. you!!! You’re going to be a sports announcer? Are you kidding? You’re not special.’”

Had mom not been so harsh, David probably would have wound up more on the color commentary side than play-by-play. In a perfect world, he would have found his way to the sad sack New York Mets.

Media Wastes Little Time Catching Up to @SeinfeldToday

This may be a new record. Sunday afternoon, the Twitter account @SeinfeldToday was playfully launched to showcase the strands of nothingness that might preoccupy Jerry, George, Elaine and Kramer if their Thursday night NBC show was still on the air.

This morning, members of the Jerry-loving media were rushing to get the scoop and this afternoon (ET time), Atlantic Wire blogger Esther Zuckerman was chronicling the whole thing. A mere 20 hours in:

The man behind the account, BuzzFeed’s sports editor Jack Moore, started tweeting out scenarios with his friend, comedian Josh Gondelman, and then decided that the joke merited its own account. Moore is a Seinfeld fanatic himself: “I’m pretty much constantly watching episodes in the background while I’m doing anything,” he told us in an email. “I have a thumb drive with the whole series on it that I keep in my bag pretty much all the time.”

With Fallon and Michaels Officially TOLDJA-ed, Who Should Host Next Oscars?

Chalk up another TOLDJA! for Nikki Finke, from a beat she still pretty much owns (who, what, when, where and how each year’s Oscar broadcast is taking shape).

In this case, on the red carpet heels of an August 2 LA Times report that Jimmy Fallon and Lorne Michaels were in talks to handle 2013 broadcast chores, Finke quickly harpooned that notion, explaining that these efforts had begun and ended with exiting AMPAS president Tom Sherak. This past Wednesday, Fallon confirmed his non-participation during a Today Show interview from London and last night, Kim Masters added a Hollywood Reporter item that seemingly reconfirms Michaels will not be involved with any iteration of Sunday Night Live.

In the wake of all this, the question remains not so much who the Oscars should approach for the producing and hosting gigs, but rather who might actually say yes. Word is the list of those who regularly turn down AMPAS is long and illustrious. In her updated Sherak item, Finke for example noted that perfect A-list candidate Tom Hanks continues to pass.

continued…

Catholic League Raises Hell Over The Three Stooges

The Three Stooges remake has caught the attention of at least one person out there.

Catholic League president Bill Donohue isn’t too fond of the Peter and Bobby Farrelly movie, raising objection to Kate Upton‘s nun bikini (Have you seen Ms. Upton, Bill?) and Larry David‘s role as Sister Mary-Mengele:

The Stooges are depicted seeking to raise money for their orphanage; it is run by habit-wearing, stereotypical nuns. One of the sisters is played by swimsuit model Kate Upton; she is shown wearing a “nun bikini” with a large rosary around her neck. Another nun, Sister Mary-Mengele, named after the Nazi war criminal, is played by Seinfeld creator Larry David.

Sweet Seinfeld Memories

Stand-up comedian and actor Kevin Pollak is quietly closing in on the 100th episode of Kevin Pollak’s Chat Show, his freewheeling online subversion of the Charlie Rose round table model. For an atypical, non-live audience Halloween edition, he sat down with actor Jason Alexander.

The conversation is peppered with all sorts of great Seinfeld reminiscences. Recalled Alexander:

“When we did the 100th episode, NBC printed up the original test group results, which were the worst in the history of network TV… There was actually a thing that said, ‘Too hip, too urban, too Jewish.’ And I said, ‘Was there a Kyke meter? Oh, oh, oh… We’re on the brink. Too much… Too Jew-y.’”

The Bald and the Beautiful

Forget about last week’s ranking by Forbes of the world’s 100 Most Powerful Women. In a town overrun with male braggadocio, the Bald 100 honor roll shared this week by GQ is going to undoubtedly be a far greater topic of conversation.

Perhaps Vin Diesel can bank on the idea that he is the top west coast industry rep on the list at #5 to spark a fresh round of meetings. Better yet, the lanky actor should have his people call Ron Howard‘s people to share a laugh over the fact that the director sits at #6. Meanwhile, it’s too bad Larry David isn’t currently in production on Curb Your Enthusiasm; he clocks in at #10, a few slides behind Samuel L. Jackson (#7), as the fourth and final member of L.A.’s gleaming chrome dome quartet.

Mika Brzezinski’s Book Party at Arianna Huffington’s House

Huffington Post senior editor Willow Bay and co-founder Arianna Huffington hosted a book party for Morning Joe co-anchor Mika Brzezinski‘s new book All Things at Once last night at Ms. Huffington’s Brentwood home. Arianna, perhaps one of the most charming people on the planet explained her role in encouraging Mika when her galleys came out. We don’t know why Joe Scarborough was there…also selling his book released in June of last year. But he was. They’re not married to each other right? Did Alan Colmes have to book tour with Sean Hannity? Somehow Joe made it about him,”It was in this room a few years ago that I predicted Barack Obama would never win against the Clinton machine,” he told the swanky LA literati. “Glad it wasn’t on TV.”

Mika, was finally given the microphone and noted she was warned against writing this book because it was too honest and could “damage her brand.” She seem genuinely impressed with the caliber of the crowd.

We spotted Larry David, yes that Larry David. Sherry Lansing was there. Journos James Rainey from LAT, Tina Daunt now of Huffpo LA, Sandra Tsing Loh, Mickey Kaus of Slate.com and of course Lawrence O’Donnell from MSNBC.

We just got word from our person on the inside that the new Microsoft commercial featuring Jerry Seinfeld and Bill Gates was most likely directed by Bryan Buckly. The same commercial director that did the American Express Ellen Degeneres spots. The one with the animals that won an Emmy and the other one with Beyonce and the Village People.

For people with TiVo, we sure watch a lot of commercials…

Media Mavericks and Moguls: Ross Johnson

Friday lunch at Orso was surprisingly fruitful, big name-wise, with Mel Brooks holding court at a table full of cronies, Larry David in a black velor tracksuit, and tall, blond and Brit Bill Nighy looking dreamy. Perfect for FBLA’s new weekly feature, Lunch with Media Moguls and Mavericks.

Ross Johnson surprised a number of people when he joined PR powerhouse Sitrick and Co., after a long career in journalism. He’s enjoying himself greatly, he says. He raves about how honcho Mike Sitrick built his firm from the ground up, and claims Sitrick works a room like no one else on this coast or the other one.

Other insights:

In 1983, William Goldman said about show business–”nobody knows anything”. Today, thanks to Nikki Finke, everybody knows something.

Patric Verrone has become the Abraham Lincoln of the WGA. But remember, Lincoln got shot.

The big thing about the WGA strike is like Woodward and Bernstein. Just like they made journalists look cool–now TV writers look cool.
