Increasing Number of Celebs Relying on Twitter Client WhoSay

The fingerprints of Creative Artists Agency (CAA) are all over WhoSay, a third-party app that is quietly becoming the go-to social media intermediary for A-list celebrities like Tom Hanks, Ellen DeGeneres, and Sarah Silverman. In large part because the LA startup pays users for transmitted photos, video, and other content.

The application was incubated at CAA and has since received $6 million in seed funding from a group of investors that includes Amazon and High Peak Ventures. For a piece on AllThingsDigital.com, Silicon Valley based business reporter Liz Gannes spoke this week with WhoSay CEO Steve Ellis. Even though WhoSay has only a few hundred users, the combined Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and Myspace reach of its membership exceeds half a billion followers and friends:

“This will never be a consumer application,” Ellis said, though he added that he can’t exactly specify the criteria for admitting WhoSay users…

Twitter Hires LA Point Man

Let’s hope in this case that appearances are definitely deceiving. Because the Twitter stream of Omid Ashtari (pictured), the man who started a new job this week in SoCal as entertainment business development rep for the micro-blogging service, was at press time far from Twitter-ific.

Journalist Liz Gannes broke the news of Twitter’s latest hire late yesterday at AllThingsDigital.com. She says the former Creative Artists Agency suit will be tasked with strengthening the use of Twitter by celebrities and Hollywood media companies.

Explains Gannes:

Twitter confirmed the hire, saying in an email that Ashtari “will lead efforts to assist the entertainment industry, including actors, musicians, and athletes, to make sure they are getting the most out of their use of Twitter. Omid will be based in Los Angeles, CA, but the scope of the job is global.”
