Penske Puts a Woman in Charge at Variety

This is pretty sweet. After 15 years with Variety, Michelle Sobrino-Stearns can add a new title to go along with sales director, managing director of features, vice president and associate publisher: the trade publication’s first-ever female publisher.

“I’m very excited and sincerely grateful to Jay for this opportunity,” Sobrino-Stearns said. “When he addressed the staff at his first town-hall meeting, he won everyone over and got them excited about the future of Variety. He has terrific plans to take our business to the next level and beyond.”

The promotion was announced today at Penske’s second town-hall, during which he promised more changes are in store. The PMC scion also couldn’t resist taking a shot at Hollywood Reporter editorial director Janice Min, contrasting her initial remarks in the New York Times to the idea of appointing someone at Variety from within.

THR Appoints Two New Vice Presidents

The Hollywood Reporter’s Victoria Gold and Beth Deutschman have just been promoted vice president of entertainment and vice president of television & media respectively. Both will report to publisher Lynne Segall.

“With the promotion of Victoria and Beth into senior leadership roles, we will be putting even more emphasis on our core business — motion pictures and television,” Segall said in an announcement on the trade’s website, “both of which have seen significant year-over-year increases in trade and consumer ad programs for both our print and digital platforms.”

THR also announced that associate publisher Craig Hitchcock will be leaving the trade “to pursue other opportunities.”

The moves come in the wake of Sharon Waxman’s report that THR is having serious financial struggles–a claim the trade denies.

The Hollywood Reporter Is Overrun with Leos

A little birdie tells us tomorrow is a big day for The Hollywood Reporter‘s upper management. Both editorial director Janice Min and publisher Lynne Segall have birthdays. Which explains a lot about the recent history of the mag. You know, the whole burn-the-house-down-and-rebuild-it-MY-WAY thing. So Leo.

It also explains why they’ve been so successful. THR is reading great these days. Happy birthday ladies.

David Poland is Not Afraid of Getting Sued by Nikki Finke

Nikki Finke published a lengthy post yesterday slamming outgoing MMC exec Lynne Segall, accusing her of an assortment of unethical behavior. The charge that Segal attempted to blur the line between advertising and editorial is especially serious, but given Finke’s somewhat elastic relationship with the truth, media sites like LA Observed and The Wrap are taking the claims with a grain of salt.

David Poland over at Movie City News goes one further, calling Finke out for her hypocrisy:

What kind of person tries to kick someone as they leave a job? A piece of shit. The same kind of piece of shit who writes nary a negative word about a failed Paramount executive as she is in bed (figuratively) with his boss.. until he is dumped… at which point she shits all over the guy in print, never, of course, mentioning the man who hired him in a fit of brain damage in the first place. The same kind of person who roots for a network exec to fail, never taking into account the many, many people whose livelihoods depend on his success.

“This is a fantastic opportunity to work with the newly, re-invigorated THR,” Segall states via this morning’s announcement. “Their website has seen unprecedented growth as they rapidly expand their consumer audience base-which is the holy grail for studio and network marketers. I look forward to re-joining The Hollywood Reporter to help deliver greater value for readers and advertisers in one of the largest and most influential markets in the country.”

LAT Loses Awards Columnist A Week Before Awards Season

Two things: Great for Deadline to snatch up Pete Hammond. Nice guy. He’ll go far. And the Arts and Entertainment section of the LA Times loses another journalist?! Really?

We’re told Pete’s column at The Envelope was the most sought after by advertisers.

It should also be noted that Hammond rejoins his colleague Lynne Segall also formally of the LAT Entertainment section.

Deadline reports:

Deadline.com is expanding its film and television awards coverage for the 2010-2011 season and beyond. Mail.com Media Corporation’s Jay Penske and Deadline.com’s Nikki Finke today announced the hiring of Pete Hammond, the well-known Los Angeles Times/The Envelope’s “Notes On A Season” blog columnist and former Variety contributor who is widely considered the preeminent awards season commentator for film and television. Effective immediately, he becomes the Deadline.com Awards Columnist. His breaking news and analysis will also be offered on Movieline.com to reach a consumer audience as well as Deadline’s industry readership. Hammond also will be contributing original columns to DeadlineHollywood’s five planned print newsletters during this awards season. It is Deadline’s intention to own the awards space, helped by Pete’s unique understanding of the behind-the-scenes of this very specialized process when the entertainment industry is fixated on grabbing the gold.

L ATimes Expands Calendar Weekend

The LA Times, in an effort to hold on to those younger readers, younger being anyone born after the Kennedy assassination, revamps the Thursday Calender section. From John Montorio’s memo:

Thursday, we’ll raise the curtain on an exciting double feature, when we replace Weekend with two new sections—a Calendar broadsheet devoted to the movies and a freshly imagined tabloid, The Guide, designed to help readers make the most of their recreational, cultural and entertainment choices.

Whee. We’re dizzy at the prospect. Betsey Sharkey gets two lieutenants in her campaign, who are cutely called a “power couple”:

Tim Swanson, Film Editor. Tim, a former editor at Premiere and writer at Portfolio, will directly oversee our movie coverage.

Gina McIntyre, Assistant Entertainment Editor. Gina, who most recently was an editor and writer at The Hollywood Reporter, joins us later this month. She’ll be helping to shape our TV, film and pop music coverage.

And the real reason for the two sections comes from Lynne Segall, LAT veep of entertainment and fashion advertising:

The Thursday broadsheet will now give the studios a broader canvas on which to market their films on the most crucial day to promote weekend movie-going

The Guide will also launch online in a beta version as early as mid-November. Ultimately replacing Calendar Live, the site will feature user-generated content, as well as content from an expanded staff, who’ll work more cheaply than those folks already in the building.
