LACMA’s upcoming Stanley Kubrick film retrospective begins November 9 with Fear and Desire and ends December 15 with Eyes Wide Shut. There will also be a separate exhibit at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, preceded by a special November 7 celebration evening event hosted by Malcolm McDowell.

Today, via Hollywood Reporter reporter Merle Ginsberg, there is also a very intriguing oral history of Eyes Wide Shut from co-star Nicole Kidman. The actress tantalizingly reminds that some much more explicit footage she was comfortably coaxed into by the late filmmaker was cut from the movie. Kidman also confirms that Kubrick was no fan of spoilers:

People have asked me if Stanley ever told us what Eyes Wide Shut was about — and the answer is no. He didn’t believe in interpretation. He always said, “Never say no to an idea — you never know how that idea will ignite another idea.” He also said: “Never put me on a pedestal. When someone’s on a pedestal, there’s no creativity.” That’s how I approach every creative person now — it does not help to glorify them.

Seven years ago, Ventura artist and filmmaker Michael O’Kelly met the late Ray Bradbury at the author’s Los Angeles home. The two became fast friends and worked together to coordinate book signings, theater events and film festival appearances.

Later this fall, O’Kelly will unveil a feature length documentary titled Live Forever – The Ray Bradbury Odyssey. He plans to also submit the movie to film festivals and have a qualifying run for Best Documentary Feature Oscar consideration. But first, there will be a November 11 screening in Ventura to benefit the San Buenaventura Friends of the Library and Ventura Film Society. From this weekend’s report in the Ventura Star:

”It’s Michael’s first film and we’re supporting him in that,” said Lorenzo DeStefano, director of the Ventura Film Society. “I saw a play that he did called Live Forever, and this has evolved from that. He’s been working on this for some time. It’s very personal too. He’s got some great actors and fans. Ray was one of the century’s most amazing guys.”

The LA Times’ Hero Complex Film Festival just announced the schedule for its third annual iteration at the Downtown Regal Cinemas at L.A. LIVE. The festivities kick off May 18 with a screening of Dawn of the Dead. Director Zack Snyder will be there for a zombietastic night with Walking Dead writer/creator Robert Kirkman.

The festival will close May 21 with a night with comic book legend Stan Lee. Other highlights include a screening of A Clockwork Orange followed by a discussion with Malcolm McDowell. There will also be Robocop.
