Santa Barbara-based Pacific Standard just announced that Nicholas Jackson, Outside magazine’s former digital director, has taken on the same role at PSmag.com. Jackson was most recently an associate editor at The Atlantic.

While they were at it, Pacific Standard also poached Outside‘s assistant online editor Ryan O’Hanlon, who will serve as the magazine’s new associate editor.

The new hires seem to indicate an Atlantic-like commitment to ratcheting up the mag’s Web content. Which makes sense, since editor Maria Streshinsky came to PS from The Atlantic–where she was credited with bringing the mag back to profitability by helping to institute a Web-centric approach.

Miller-McCune has a new name–which can only be a good thing. The magazine is now called Pacific Standard. In announcing the change, editor Maria Streshinsky seems to be positing the mag as a West Coast version of The Atlantic. Which makes sense, because Streshinsky came to MM from The Atlantic.

Writes Streshinsky:

We realize our geographical positioning is as crucial a foundation for our editorial mission as our devotion to research-driven journalism.

Our stories won’t be solely about the West. They will be from the West. Whether we are looking at Beijing, New York, or for that matter Sacramento, we will be doing so from a Pacific perspective and a Western sensibility.

That all makes sense. And the name chance is a good one. Although not the most creative, given that the biggest art exhibition in the history of California is currently underway and has basically the same name: Pacific Standard Time.

Miller-McCune has tapped The Atlantic‘s managing editor Maria Streshinsky as its new editor-in-chief. Streshinsky oversaw a staff of 30 at The Atlantic, where she helped bring that magazine to profitability for the first time in…oh…a century or so. The hire comes just a few days after Miller-McCune named Steven Ainsley as its new publisher. The mag says it also plans to launch a redesign, to be completed in 2012.
