Did the LA Weekly Get Manny Pacquiao Barred from The Grove?

Part-time Los Angeles resident Manny Pacquiao might have to find a new place to spend his free time when he’s in town.

The Filipino boxer and politician was barred from The Grove and the television show Extra after the shopping center was tipped off to a quote Pacquiao reportedly told the Examiner, saying that gay men “must be put to death.”

Well, that’s if you listen to the LA Weekly, who took the original article out of context and tipped off The Grove owner Rick Caruso.

This is what the Examiner article originally said:

Pacquiao’s directive for Obama calls societies to fear God and not to promote sin, inclusive of same-sex marriage and cohabitation, notwithstanding what Leviticus 20:13 has been pointing all along: “If a man lies with a man as one lies with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They must be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads.”

Ben Lyons Jumps from E! to Extra

Big news from the Hollywood press junket and red carpet fronts. When Ben Lyons next walks into a Beverly Hills Four Seasons interview suite or corrals 50 Cent outside an event for the rapper’s additional two, he will be doing so for a new E-tastic outlet.

Lyons, a congenial staple at E! News for the past five years, moved over March 1 to the Burbank headquartered, Grove broadcast-anchored Extra. His new home was launched about seven years after the founding of E! and is currently hosted by Mario Lopez.

“I’ve had my eye on Ben for a long time,” said Lisa Gregorisch-Dempsey, senior executive producer of Extra. “He’s an entertainment news wunderkind… Between his deep knowledge of entertainment and his close relationships in Hollywood, he will be a great addition.”

Mario Lopez Lands LA Radio Show

Big day in LA radio. First Geraldo Rivera gets a show, now Mario Lopez. Starting this coming Monday, A.C. Slater himself will host a weekday “music intensive” show on 104.3 MYfm. Lopez’s show will broadcast from The Grove at 7-11 p.m. nightly. Los Angeles will never be the same.

Lopez is already the host of MTV’s America’s Best Dance Crew and the celebrity news show Extra.

Pair of Extra Executives Go After the ‘Haters’

New York Times showbiz correspondent Brooks Barnes has a preview of H8R, the CW half-hour reality show debuting Wednesday. Created by Extra producers Lisa Gregorisch-Dempsey and Jeremy Spiegel, and hosted by their program’s on-air personality Mario Lopez, it all sounds rather contrived.

On each episode, a pair of celebrities are shown videotaped rants made by someone who “hates” them and then track down those people for a “surprise” encounter. There’s no doubt the underlying issue here is serious, but nothing in Barnes’ piece suggests the show will come close to a strange bit of family gravitas linkage involving Gregorisch-Dempsey:

One of her cousins is Glenn Berman, the New Jersey judge presiding over the trial of Dharun Ravi, who is accused of secretly taping his Rutgers University roommate [Tyler Clementi] having an intimate encounter with another man and streaming the images online. The roommate committed suicide a few days later.

Former E! Red Carpet Host Joins Wall Street Journal Radio Network

Long before Ryan Seacrest and Giuliana Rancic, Michael Castner (pictured) was a go-to red carpet guy at E! Entertainment Television. In the ’90s and early 2000s, he ran the gamut, from the Grammys and Golden Globes to the Oscars.

What a difference a decade makes. After various regional radio stints, Castner is set next month to start hosting “The Daily Wrap from the Wall Street Journal,” a syndicated 6 to 9 p.m. weekday news, talk, and opinion program on the Wall Street Journal Radio Network. He will break down the day’s major stories not just in entertainment but also news, world politics, health, sports, and more. Per the press release:

“My goal for the show is to quickly and informally capture the essence of the day’s top issues,” said Castner. “I’ll be talking with reporters and opinion leaders who will share information and observations. We’ll look for unique details through conversation, not confrontation.”
