The most miraculous aspect of last night’s Golden Globes Lifetime acceptance speech by Jodie Foster is that it put forth the same level of ballroom and telecast entertainment as Ving Rhames‘ hand-off of his Don King: Only in America 1998 acting statuette to Jack Lemmon. With Mel Gibson providing the throw-to audience celebrity extra flavor rather than Jack Nicholson and Jim Carrey.

Seriously. We watched the above clip before last night’s 70th Golden Globes and told ourselves how lucky we and everyone else would be if something came close. Well, thanks to Foster’s remarkable six-and-a-half-minute speech, that’s exactly what happened.

People Magazine Gifts ABC Sitcom with Sexiest Product Placement Alive

To playfully set the stage for this year’s “Sexiest Man Alive” issue, the folks at People are taking product placement to a whole new level. The night before the official announcement on November 14 of the 2012 SMA recipient, the storyline of ABC sitcom Don’t Trust the B—- in Apartment 23 will be all about the determination of this year’s honoree:

June (Dreama Walker) is obsessed with People magazine’s annual Sexiest Man Alive issue, though Chloe (Krysten Ritter) tells her she shouldn’t be such a sheep and let others dictate what’s hot and sexy. To prove her point, she swoops into the People offices in an attempt to coerce them to feature James Van Der Beek on this year’s SMA cover. James is thrilled by the prospect, and now June suddenly finds him irresistibly attractive.

“This just seemed like the perfect sitcom to do this with,” People executive editor Liz Sporkin tells FishbowlLA via telephone. “Especially since James Van Der Beek sends himself up every week on the show and he was a hot guy on Dawson’s Creek.” Returning the synergistic favor, People will have Van Der Beek pen for the 2012 SMA issue the latest edition of companion column “If I Were Sexiest Man Alive.”

In a recent interview with the website ComingSoon.net, former A-list actor Mel Gibson said that while Hollywood wasn’t ready to forgive him yet, he wasn’t sure what he needed to be forgiven for in the first place:

What did I do, really? It is kind of ridiculous. So it’s kind of hard to pinpoint exactly what needs to be forgiven and I don’t consider that anything does because I didn’t hurt anyone.

Stranger things have happened, although even just the imagined sight of Mel Gibson in this context is enough to give FishbowlLA whiplash.

During a chat this morning with K-Earth 101′s Gary Bryan, the Extra! co-host picked up on Mad Mel’s recent boogie-down appearance at her Bud Light sponsored birthday party with the following playful suggestion:

“I think he’s auditioning for Dancing with the Stars to be honest, and I think he has a really good chance. You should have seen his moves, he was great.”

“I don’t know, I’m going to start that rumor.”

Mel Gibson Exclusives a Watershed Moment for TheWrap

It’s been an absolutely insane seven days at TheWrap as a result of the site’s exclusive coverage of Mel Gibson’s December 2011 Costa Rica meltdown. First came the nine-page letter written by Joe Eszterhas, followed yesterday by some frightening audio corroboration, recorded by the screenwriter’s son Nick.

“It’s a phenomenal shift moment for the site,” confirms Sharon Waxman via telephone to FishbowlLA. “We’ve never seen traffic coming in the way it has in the past week.”

TheWrap has registered hundreds of thousands of page views for each Gibson story, while social media shares have been in the tens of thousands. The Gibson coverage has also buffeted TheWrap’s international profile, with lots of UK and German linkage. When we spoke to Waxman, there was a Russian TV station crew setting up at her offices for an interview.

TheWrap’s numbers would be even larger if the audio of a sober (and perhaps severely bi-polar) Gibson had remained exclusive to the site. But because the file was shared, The Drudge Report is linking today for example to a TMZ story (with full credit to TheWrap) about the audio.

TheWrap Makes Like TMZ, Scores Massive Mel Gibson Scoop

It was not quite as shocking as the four-page LASD arresting officer’s report that launched TMZ in the summer of 2006, mainly because it is Mel once removed. Nevertheless, the nine-page Joe Eszterhas letter obtained by TheWrap easily ranks as the website’s loudest scoop so far. Detailing a string of alleged anti-Semitic remarks made by Mel Gibson, TheWrap’s coverage was double-linked Wednesday on the Drudge Report and picked up far and wide.

At least one outlet got a major detail wrong, prompting article author Sharon Waxman to let them know about it via Twitter. At the time of this posting, the mistake has not been corrected:

Christian Film Producer Hopes to Shepherd ‘God’s Sequel’ to Mel Gibson

California-based Christian Post reporter Alex Murashko caught up with David Wood at the tail end of the March 21-25 K.E.Y.S. conference in LA. The topic of conversation was Wood’s ambitious movie project The Resurrection.

Some in the Christian filmmaking community are referring to the planned feature as “God’s sequel” to Mel Gibson’s 2004 smash The Passion of the Christ. Wood and a team of five other producers are starting to put the word out to churches about the project and hope to crowd-source the entire $40 million budget:

A “Spiritual Producer” is described as an individual who has donated a minimum of $25 or more to the not-for-profit, pledged to pray for the Resurrection project, spread the word (i.e. via Facebook, Twitter) and/or committed a serious capital investment in the project with a financial return…

Mel Gibson May Have to Testify in LASD Discrimination Trial

Mel Gibson may be called to testify in the discrimination case of Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department deputy James Mee. Mee is the deputy who arrested Gibson back in 2006, and who Gibson allegedly berated with anti-Semitic comments. Mee alleges that supervisors made him scrub Gibson’s anti-Semetic slurs from his report on the incident–and that he was subsequently denied promotions as a result of the incident.

Gibson had worked as a spokesperson for the department prior to his arrest and was seen as close with the top brass. LA Sheriff Lee Baca may also be called to testify.

We here at FishbowlLA typically prefer our news substantial, rather than circus freakshow. But you better believe if these two hit the witness stand it we’ll be down at the courthouse with all the other bozos, throwing elbows while struggling to get one coherent five-word question in.

Michael Moore Recalls Two Monumental LA Moments

Last night at the Writers Guild Theater in Beverly Hills, Michael Moore kicked off the 16th year of long-running non-profit literary conversation series Writers Bloc Presents with a couple of great LA stories. He was there, along with journalist-moderator Anne Thompson and a pair of bodyguards, to promote and sign copies of his new book Here Comes Trouble.

Moore explained how, on the weekend of his Oscar win for 2002′s Bowling for Columbine, a casual invite from Tim Robbins turned into a hotel room full of Hollywood stars, each sharing their suggestions for his possible Best Documentary acceptance speech. Sean Penn pitched the idea of 45 seconds of stone-faced silence, while Robbins—with others like George Clooney and Eddie Veder looking on–thought perhaps that Moore could announce he was giving up the Academy Award statuette in honor of Lent.

But the real LA humdinger occurred the following year, 2004, when TIME magazine arranged for Moore and Mel Gibson to travel to LA for a photo shoot and sit-down interview in support of a shared “Person of the Year” cover:

“The night before, Mel went to his church in Malibu and had a revelation,” Moore explained. “Jesus, God, the Holy Ghost, who knows… Or as the lady in the front row here just said, St. Jack Daniels. But a voice told him, ‘You are NOT to appear on the cover of TIME magazine with the Devil.’”

Say What?! Ricky Gervais Claims Golden Globes Want Him Back as Host

Today, during an interview session at a TV festival in Edinburgh sponsored by The Guardian, comedian Ricky Gervais revealed that he has been invited to return as host of the 2011 Golden Globes. However, he went on to explain that he doesn’t think he will take NBC and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) up on this surprising turnabout offer:

“I love NBC, I love the fact they stuck by me through it,” Gervais said. Asked by interviewer Richard Bacon if he was considering the offer, Gervais replied: “I am but I shouldn’t do it. It’s a second encore. Don’t do a second encore. I don’t think I should do it. What am I going back as?”

Perhaps as a guy trying to clean up his own mess. Although the acerbic funnyman aimed to subvert this past January, most of his jokes fell flat because they were rude rather than cleverly rude.

Thanks to a new deal with Premiere Networks that went live June 20, Harvey Levin has crossed over into the final, retro media frontier: radio.

TMZ Radio airs Monday through Friday as two separate one-minute installments, with Levin touching on the day’s latest celebrity news headlines. It can be heard locally on KBIG-FM and via some 50 other stations around the country. Befitting TMZ’s status as a one-man brand, the “About Harvey Levin” section in today’s press release clocks in at 345 words, longer than the body-text portion of the release.

Audiences Steer Clear of The Beaver

Last November, we wondered: “Will Audiences Give a Dam About The Beaver?” The answer, based on this weekend’s limited release opening box office, is not really.

While the Mel Gibson drama scored fairly well on RottenTomatoes.com, it likely lost what little chance of success it had by coming out in the midst of Fast Five and Thor. Today, Steven Zeitchik over at LA Times blog “24 Frames” tries to make sense of The Beaver‘s $4,727 per-screen average:

To put that in lay terms, that means that in the markets the Jodie Foster film opened, very few people came out to see it. To put that in other lay terms, the average was lower than that for the recent opening of Atlas Shrugged, a movie so unpopular it prompted its producer to contemplate retirement
