Late this afternoon, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association tweeted out a spectacular bit of news:

Media reaction is pouring in and so far it’s unanimously ecstatic. Anne Thompson cheers “Good call, HFPA!”; CELEBUZZ senior TV editor Jethro Nededog suggests that Dick Clark Productions, the HFPA and NBC all “deserve a standing ovation;” and TVLine’s Michael Ausiello and Kimberly Roots enthusiastically declare “we want to go there.”

Jay Penske Clicks Into TV Entertainment News Game

Good scoop for Wall Street Journal TV reporter Lauren Schuker. She is the first to report about a new tentacle of the Jay Penske-PMC media empire, something called Entertainment News Television (entv).

Starting this week, a roster of personalities including HollywoodLife.com’s Bonnie Fuller, TVLine.com’s Michael Ausiello, and yes, Deadline.com’s Nikki Finke, will start dropping into elevators, taxicabs, and partner ION TV’s broadcast network to help deliver short entertainment news video snippets. Unlike Fuller and Ausiello, however, Finke will materialize in voiceover form only. Sorry.

Lynne Segall Heads Back to The Hollywood Reporter

After a stint at the LA Times and a year trying to help monetize the efforts of Nikki Finke, Bonnie Fuller, Michael Ausiello, and co., Lynne Segall has accepted a plum job with her old employer The Hollywood Reporter. She is now the senior vice president and publisher of Janice Min‘s chart-topping website and glossy weekly mag.

“This is a fantastic opportunity to work with the newly, re-invigorated THR,” Segall states via this morning’s announcement. “Their website has seen unprecedented growth as they rapidly expand their consumer audience base-which is the holy grail for studio and network marketers. I look forward to re-joining The Hollywood Reporter to help deliver greater value for readers and advertisers in one of the largest and most influential markets in the country.”

Her SoCal media career is a reminder that persistence pays off. She worked as an intern not once but four times after graduating from UC San Diego, at Advanced Marketing Services, the San Diego Tribune, Crain Communications, and Entertainment Weekly. She has also freelanced along the way for EW, the LA Times Show Tracker blog, and Vulture among others.

Roger Friedman Points Thievery Finger at Deadline.com

New York based showbiz columnist Roger Friedman has never been shy about outing media outlets that allegedly steal material from his Showbiz 411 website to then claim the news, exclusively, as their own. In fact, learning about the latest poacher(s) is half the fun of checking in with Friedman’s (recently revamped) site.

Yesterday, Friedman went for the thievery trifecta, accusing People of grabbing some Nicole Kidman-Keith Urban baby naming background info and the Deadline.com website family of two uncredited showbiz news borrows. The first, claims Friedman, involved a TVLine.com item by Michael Ausiello about Ricky Gervais possibly guesting on the US version of The Office; the other was a Deadline.com piece about Regis Philbin‘s retirement announcement.

Deadline lifted an entire story out of this column yesterday [1/18], about Regis not retiring from his career but simply leaving his show. This Nellie Andreeva is really a piece of work.

Movieline Now Has Two Chief Film Critics

Can a movie website have two “chief film critics?” Apparently so.

Just eight months after former Salon.com contributor Stephanie Zacharek was announced as chief film critic at Movieline.com, the website is proudly sharing the news today of Elvis Mitchell‘s appointment as… chief film critic. Mitchell is of course the former New York Times staffer who was briefly lined up for Roger Ebert‘s relaunch of At the Movies and currently hosts weekly chat program “The Treatment” on KCRW.

“Movieline.com represents the future of film journalism and I love what they have been doing,” says Mitchell. “Any place smart enough to bring Stephanie Zacharek to the party is definitely a site I want to be a part of.”

Finke Based Tilda in Finke-Free Turmoil

Yes, the pilot shoot of Tilda was nasty according to EW and no it had nothing to do with Nikki Finke. Yes, you could say we give Finke too much credit – but even a little is more than the producers of Tilda gave her. Ahem.

The future of an HBO project that’s loosely based on Hollywood’s irascible blogger Nikki Finke is in doubt after an on-set blowout that’s strikingly similar to some of the juicy posts that can be found on Deadline.com.

Showrunner Cynthia Mort has been removed from Tilda after a tense pilot shoot in which she frequently clashed with executive producer/director Bill Condon and got into public scuffles with Diane Keaton, who plays a powerful online journalist who covers the entertainment industry.

“It was an unhappy marriage from day one,” says one source of the Condon-Mort partnership. “They banged heads about almost everything…and during production she picked huge public fights with anyone who disagreed with her on anything, including Diane.”

Jon Robin Baitz has been given the boot from Brothers and Sisters, the show he created. He’s had plenty to say about it himself, but that doesn’t keep the “pundits” from weighing in.

Defamer: “There must be a less extreme and destructive solution than Baitz’s suggestion of burning the entire city to the ground and rubbing salt on the charred ruins of the Spearmint Rhino.”

AfterElton.com: “How exactly might this affect Brothers & Sisters‘ gay content? That question is of great concern to gay viewers as the Sunday night drama, regularly ranking in the Nielsen’s Top Twenty Network Primetime Series, has been one of the most gay-friendly and gay-inclusive ever on network television.”

Watching Brothers And Sisters: “He also deploys quite a wide array of verbal artillery to blast the item’s author, Michael Ausiello [who first reported the ouster in his column]. I’m not sure about the wisdom of starting feuds with gossip columnists, but Baitz makes it pretty clear that he’s not going to play by Hollywood rules anymore, and, okay, good luck with that.”

Michael Ausiello Isn’t a Doctor, Plays One on TV

FBLA loves press releases. TV Guide’s hardworking Julie Farin alerted us to this groundbreaking morsel:

TV Guide’s ubiquitous columnist Michael Ausiello (Ask Ausiello, The Ausiello Report) makes a cameo appearance as an obstetrician on the NBC comedy Scrubs on Thursday, February 8 at 9 PM ET/PT, where he performs an ultrasound on Elizabeth Banks’ expectant Dr. Kim character in a scene that has “a cool trick ending,” according to Banks.

Does the trick involve handcuffs and a ball gag?

After wrapping the scene, the actress told Ausiello, “I felt like you were a real doctor. I mean, you’re wearing the outfit, you said all the right things…I was very impressed.”

Boy, is Banks easy to fool or what? Just get yourself some gel lubricant and a dingy scrub suit, and you can give her a pelvic, anytime, anyplace.

While on the set, Scrubs star Zach Braff told Ausiello that he may be open to the idea of a potential seventh season. “Everyone’s been procrastinating in making the decision–myself included,” he revealed. And what about the real name of the Janitor? Neil Flynn hinted, “We’re not going to find out until possibly the last episode.”

How about Isaiah? Isaiah Washington makes a good name for the janitor.

Josh Schwartz to Ausiello: O.C. on the CW? Never Say Never

Josh Schwartz is teasing his loyal fans by hinting that his late, and curiously unlamented The O.C. might move to the CW. The faithful at Save the OC are leaking an interview done by Michael Ausiello:

Ausiello: So there’s no chance of it moving to another network? Like, say, the CW?

Schwartz: I don’t want to ever say never, because at a certain point… At this moment? No. Secretly, I would love a Julie-Kaitlin anti-Gilmore Girls show.

TV Guide doesn’t have it up yet, and FBLA thinks the fans are kidding themselves. We think he can move it to Spike.
