Assessing the New Hollywood Reporter

OK, we finally got our hands on a copy of the new and improved Hollywood Reporter. First thought: wow, this thing is thick. 152 pages thick, filled with glossy fashion ads. Nice.

That said, our initial thoughts about the cover have stuck with us: that’s an awful lot of white women. Said cover is a rather dull shot of pasty Oscar hopefuls Amy Adams, Nicole Kidman, Helena Bonham Carter, Annette Bening, Hilary Swank and Natalie Portman. When we wrote about the lily white cover earlier this week, a rep from THR wrote us to say she agreed, and that THR had covered the issue of how this could be the whitest Oscars in 10 years–no minorities are expected to be nominated in any of the major categories.

True, but that doesn’t mean you have to go along with it. It’s your cover.

Starring Nicole Kidman as Sarah Palin

CVN_MCCAIN_VEEPSTAKES_.sff.standalone.prod_affiliate.101.jpgBeauty queen (Miss Congeniality actually), TV sports reporter, two year governor of Alaska Sarah Palin, has been chosen by John McCain for a VP.

Drudge was ‘whispering’ in red about Tim Pawlenty. We knew she was on the short list – but this makes his run for president a little more interesting.

McCain has done very well for himself ditching the ahem ‘more experienced’ loyal, if you will, people in his life (think the woman who stuck with him when he was a POW) and choosing a hot young thing.

If there hasn’t already been a movie about Palin (To Die For) starring Nicole Kidman…they will be…Okay she totally reminds us of a Nicole Kidman character. Doesn’t she? Vehement, slightly creepy with amazing skin.

Nicita Out At CAA for Morgan Creek…Go figure!

RickNicita.jpgCreative Artists Agency top-rung earner Rick Nicita seems to be waving bye-bye to the agency to take a job as Chairman and Chief Operating Officer for Morgan Creek Pictures, according to a company release.

While that may well be possible, it’s an awkward fit at best. Nicita has been a top agent at CAA for years with clients like Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman. He’s also married to Cruise’s partner at United Artists, Paula Wagner.

While the Morgan Creek position is in fact a job, it seems a bit unlikely because Morgan Creek is by no means a major production entity and Nicita is very much a top agent. The company has had a deal with Universal since 2004, but the best money-makers of their movies were with Warner Bros., with “Robin
Hood: Prince of Thieves
,” “Major League” and “Major League 2.”

As well, the company has long been run by Jim Robinson, who doesn’t play well with others. When former Hollywood Reporter Editor Alex Ben Block left the Reporter to become head of marketing for Morgan Creek and Robinson, it ended quickly because Robinson demanded that Block be in by 9 a.m.

Who knows whether Nicita’s schedule will be all that amenable to Robiinson and Morgan Creek. For L.A. Times story read on…

second_thought_220_2.jpgPissed Much, Ken? Within the first few grafs, film critic Kenneth Turan shows his disdain for his (admittedly stupid) task of having to answer whether critics ever second-guess themselves: “Let me explain why I feel that asking critics about what they got wrong, or for that matter what they got right, is to fundamentally misunderstand what it is we do and how we do it.”

40727141.jpgChilling Sentence Of The Day: In this story about a new Gits‘ docu, one of Mia Zapata‘s bandmates, Steve Moriarty says, “It can be pretty awful to have to describe what it was like to go out every night for three months looking for a murderer on your own with a knife and a baseball bat, which is what I did.”

40754044-07100117.jpgWelcome Sunday Rose: Nicole Kidman gave birth to a daughter this morning. Congratulations. Here’s hoping Nicole will be able to work off the remaining 3 ounces of baby weight.

Catherine Olim Declared Meanest Publicist In Hollywood

nicoleoscars.jpgIt’s probably a coveted distinction, so congratulations, Catherine Olim (Nicole Kidman’s rep), for being named by Defamer as the Meanest Publicist in Hollywood. We wonder whom she’d thank… oh, yeah, probably no one.

Andrew Morton Says Tom Cruise #2 at Scientology

tomcruisescientolAP_228x469.jpg

British biographer Andrew Morton has the “church” of L. Ron in a frenzy with his new biography of Tom Cruise. The book claims:

Cruise is the # 2 guy, after David Miscavige,

daughter by Katie Holmes “conceived like Rosemary’s Baby”,

Cruise’s next mission is to recruit David Beckham,

Nicole Kidman “feared blackmail” over sex tapes made with Scientologists,

Idle thought: Kidman should have feared blackmail over Eyes Wide Shut.

The book comes out in the US on the 15th of this month, but won’t appear in the UK, due to the stringent libel laws. Paulette Cooper has been on the receiving end of such lawsuits.

And Dana Goodyear goes inside the Celebrity Centre.

Correction: W Magazine Not Promoting A Cat Fight

Our friends at Haute and Bothered alerted us to a little error in one of our earlier posts. Seems W Magazine’s November issue features nine covers, allowing readers to choose from Nicole Kidman, Jennifer Aniston, Katie Holmes, Britney Spears, Angelina Jolie, Jessica Simpson, Julia Roberts, Cameron Diaz and Lindsay Lohan.

Trade Round-Up: August 20, 2007

THR reports that Fox has again gone to its go-to guy for live broadcasts, Ryan Seacrest, signing the American Idol host to emcee the network’s Sept. 16 telecast of the 59th annual Emmy Awards. Reporter Nellie Andreeva writes that while Seacrest is a “logical” choice for Fox, he is a “somewhat unorthodox pick for the Emmy Awards ceremony which are usually fronted by a comedian.” To be fair though, Seacrest does have his share of funny moments on Idol. But instead of traditional jokes, they’re usually in the form of jabs at Simon Cowell. Wonder what he’ll do without having the razor-tongue Brit to rely on? Well, he could always request a front-row seat for Paula Abdul.

Judd Apatow continued his summer reign at the box-office with his latest pic, Superbad, opening superhuge at No. 1 with a $31.2 million take. The Superbad bow comes on the heels of Apatow’s earlier summer comedy Knocked Up which is currently pushing towards the $150 million mark. Hollywood officially has its new golden boy while a previous golden girl, Nicole Kidman, had a steep fall from grace after her latest pic, the sci-fi remake Invasion, couldn’t invade the top three spots, settling for a No. 5 debut with a paltry $6 million.

Speaking of Kidman, the poor showing of her latest pic hasn’t hindered her career prospects, reports Var’s Michael Fleming. The Oscar-winner has signed on to star opposite Ralph Fiennes in the love story, The Reader, for the Weinstein Co. Stephen Daldry directs based on a novel by German scribe Bernhard Schlink. Reader reunites the Aussie actress with her Cold Mountain producers Anthony Minghella and Sydney Pollack.

Meanwhile, Kidman’s ex Tom Cruise has been busy himself, shooting the Bryan Singer-directed Valkyrie in Germany. However, filming hit a bit of a speed bump on Sunday night when 11 people were injured when they fell off the back of a truck in Berlin. THR reports that a side panel burst open when a truck drove around a corner, seriously injuring one cast member.

Disney’s squeaky-clean teen smash High School Musical dirtied up the record books over the weekend when the sequel premiered on Friday night. Var reports that the telefilm averaged 17.2 million viewers for the premiere, making it “the most-watched basic-cable telecast on record. It’s also the largest aud for any television program on any net in about three months.”
