A Vintage Moment for AP’s Linda Deutsch

The 4 Queens Hotel and Casino in downtown Las Vegas has been in operation since 1966. The queen of AP courtroom reporting, Linda Deutsch, has been with the wire service since 1967. This week, the twain of these two institutions delightfully met.

Per Norm Clarke’s latest column in the Las Vegas Review-Journal, the LA-based Deutsch was having dinner Wednesday night at hotel restaurant Hugo’s Cellar, forgetting that she was due at that time for a BBC Radio phone interview about O.J. Simpson‘s latest courtroom theatrics. The restaurant was too noisy and there was no time to get back to her own hotel room. So instead, Deutsch gamely did the following:

Hugo’s manager Richard Assalone, who has worked at some of the best restaurants in town, came up with a corker of a solution: He borrowed a chair from a dinner table and gave Deutsch the coolest seat in town — inside Hugo’s 55-degree wine cellar.

Report: There’s a Prince Harry Vegas Video

Looks like Las Vegas Review-Journal columnist Norm Clarke was right on the VIP money.

Over the weekend, Drudge linked to the reporter’s August 26 item about the potential for even more scandalous media materials to come out of Prince Harry’s recent boisterous visit to The Strip. This morning, Radar Online managing editor David Perel seems to confirm that possibility via an anonymous source:

“There is video of Harry partying naked with women in the Las Vegas hotel room,” a source familiar with the situation said. “There have been some very quiet inquiries to see how much the video is worth.”

Pia Zadora is Once Again a Las Vegas Headliner

At no point was the reputation of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association lowlier than the time a certain rich Hollywood husband (Meshulam Riklis) greased the wheels of the organization’s membership to maximize the chances of his young actress wife (Pia Zadora) winning a Golden Globe. (She did.)

Per a a recent item by Las Vegas Review-Journal columnist Norm Clarke, lo these many years later, Zadora has moved to Vegas, married a cop and found a hankering for old standards. At a weekend Sin City charity event, the 58-year-old Hoboken, NJ native talked to Clarke about her upcoming July 27-28 Vegas performance at The Smith Center:

Zadora has put together a cabaret show featuring the standards that Frank Sinatra suggested for her when they worked at the Riviera. A year in the making, her show caught the eye of Myron Martin, president and CEO of The Smith Center, while she was performing in San Francisco’s Hotel Nikko Rrazz Room.

Former AP Journo Recalls ‘Royal Choke Job’

Although Las Vegas Review-Journal columnist Norm Clarke (pictured) is not invited to this weekend’s other royal wedding – the marriage of casino titan Steve Wynn to British gal Andrea Hissom – he takes the opportunity to muse about some run-ins with higher ups.

In 1999, the Hard Rock Hotel took a hard line against Clarke after he wrote about Ben Affleck‘s $660,000 winnings and six-figure tipping of waiters and dealers. Then there was the time, as coordinator of Associated Press coverage of the LA Summer Olympics, that Clarke was tasked with covering a $1,000-a-plate fundraiser for the British Olympic Committee.
