We’ve floated this idea past a couple of media colleagues with unimpeachable Academy Awards expertise. One is a full-time kudos season chronicler; the other, a published Hollywood history author and film PR whiz. Since both gave our suggestion the big Broadway thumbs up, FishbowlLA is now officially proposing it to the Academy.

To Neil Meron and Craig Zadan, co-producers of next February’s Oscar telecast, we say: If you have not already contacted Nathan Lane’s reps to see if he would be interested in doing the Dolby Theatre honors, then please do so – pronto.

We have no idea if Lane would say yes. But here’s a guy who can handle any necessary musical telecast components as smoothly as Hugh Jackman and Neil Patrick Harris. More importantly, per his regular sit-downs with David Letterman, Lane is also flat-out, ad lib hilarious.

Rage Against The Machine Guitarist Pens Editorial Blasting Paul Ryan

Vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan has named Rage Against the Machine as one of his favorite bands, but the fandom isn’t mutual. In an editorial for Rolling Stone, Tom Morello, guitarist of the Los Angeles-based group, said he found Ryan’s love of Rage Against the Machine “amusing, because he is the embodiment of the machine that our music has been raging against for two decades.”

The right-wing Ryan’s politics are certainly at odds with those of RATM. Ryan denies the existence of global warming, opposes gay marriage, and supports increased tax cuts for the rich while voting against increasing the minimum wage. Then there’s the whole issue of gutting medicare and killing Social Security. Morello rants:

Don’t mistake me, I clearly see that Ryan has a whole lotta “rage” in him: A rage against women, a rage against immigrants, a rage against workers, a rage against gays, a rage against the poor, a rage against the environment. Basically the only thing he’s not raging against is the privileged elite he’s groveling in front of for campaign contributions.

Vegas Journo Adds Casino Context to Reuters-Sands Bulletin

On Monday, Reuters west coast enterprise editor Peter Henderson and author-contributor Joseph Menn made waves with an article about Las Vegas Sands Corp. being investigated by the Nevada State Gaming Control Board in connection with some explosive China accusations leveled by a former employee. Accusations that have been consistently denied by Sands chairman Sheldon Adelson (pictured).

Today, Las Vegas Review-Journal staffer Howard Stutz shares an intriguing op ed about all this. He says it’s par for the exclusive, Shadow Creek course:

In reality, Nevada’s licensed casino companies are always under investigation. So an international media report Monday that Las Vegas Sands Corp. is being probed by the Nevada Gaming Commission and Control Board over bribe payment allegations in mainland China isn’t much of a revelation.

Nor is there much new in reports on the allegations, some of which are a decade old.

Atlas Shrugged, ‘Meh’

In a piece titled, “Paul Ryan and the New Politics of Sadism” in Esquire they draw a fascinating parallel:

In terms of their connection to actual human reality, the difference between the doctrines of Ayn Rand and the doctrines of L. Ron Hubbard is not substantial, and the fervor of their acolytes is almost exactly the same. Picking Paul Ryan to handle your political economy is tantamount to electing Tom Cruise to be pope.

We’ll add one more: In 2000 when Battlefield Earth, a movie based on a L Ron Hubbard novel, came out the reviews were universally bad and by and large hilarious.

Now Atlas Shrugged Part I is registering similar on Rotten Tomatoes. It’s ranking (as of this posting) is 6% on the Tomatometer. Reviews like:
