Pedro Almodóvar to Guest Direct AFI Fest

Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar will be the latest big name filmmaker to guest direct the AFI Fest. Almodóvar’s formal title will be “Guest Artistic Director” for the festival’s 25th anniversary in November. As part of his duties, Almodóvar will curate a series of films that have inspired his work. He’ll also screen his 1986 film Law of Desire.

Almodóvar takes over for David Lynch, who manned the post last year.

Lost in Univision Translation

Following Monday’s record-breaking ratings for the first season 9 p.m. finale of telenovela Soy Tu Dueňa, broadcaster Univision rightly crowed about the show’s 9.4 million viewers and across-the-board claim to the prized 18-to-49 viewer demo.

But as reports in the L.A. Times and Variety have separately pointed out, the literal translation of the show’s title has been greatly softened for English language consumption. Instead of the diccionario-correct I’m Your Owner, we get Women of Steel.

Fox Latino Overstates Penélope Cruz Case

First, Salma Hayek admits that she was, for a brief time at the very beginning of her LA acting career, a visitor with an expired Mexican visa. Now comes news that fellow Hispanic hottie Penélope Cruz and partner Javier Bardem, Spain’s chromosome equivalent of Brad and Angelina, are planning to birth their first child in LA rather than Madrid.

Like many EU nations, Spain allows for dual citizenship, even if the child is born abroad. So the couple (JaPen? PenJa?) has reportedly decided to do the hospital holiday season honors on this side of the Altantico to give Jr. the full benefit of an international citizenship.

Howard Brandy, inspiration for Dudley Do-Right, 79

Howard Brandy, a publicist in film and music over a career spanning nearly five decades and known as the model for the cartoon character Dudley Do-Right, died last Monday after a long illness. He was 79.

In the 1950s, Brandy represented teen heartthrobs Fabian and Frankie Avalon before going on to work with Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Sam Cooke, the Fifth Dimension, Lionel Richie, Captain & Tennille and the Monkees. He also headed publicity for A&M records, Uni Records and Motown.
