Report: CAA Eyeing Silicon Valley Office

Peter Lauria, editor-in-charge of technology, media, telecom at Thomson Reuters, had an interesting item yesterday about the possibility of CAA opening up a small office in Silicon Valley.

Agents from Hollywood’s leading talent representation firm already shuttle back and forth to the technology hotbed several times a week, where marquee clients include Biz Stone and Mark Zuckerberg‘s sister Randi. But per Lauria’s unnamed sources, there’s a lot more to it than that:

Currently, the agency’s business in Silicon Valley is divided into three: advising tech companies about Hollywood, partnering with venture capital firms to incubate start-ups, and matching clients who have digital media ideas with companies that can help bring them to fruition.

Daily Beast vs. Vulture

Thursday afternoon, The Daily Beast‘s Peter Lauria posted a very blunt, mightier-than-thou “Facebook Exclusive” take-down of a Claude Brodesser-Akner November 3rd item on New York Magazine’s Vulture blog. West coast editor Brodesser-Akner (pictured) had suggested after speaking to his sources that Universal President and COO Ron Meyer‘s days may be numbered now that Comcast is coming into the NBCUni kingdom.

Responded Lauria:

The lengthy post surmised that Meyer, the longest-tenured CEO in Hollywood, may be pushed out of Universal Studios by new owner Comcast once the takeover is complete. Too bad the story is a steaming pile of poo. According to three sources—all insiders at Comcast or Universal—Meyer’s position under the Comcast regime is secure…

The truth is that Comcast isn’t sure what to do with Universal right now. But sources say that until Comcast can dig into the business it would prefer to keep Universal’s executive team stable and give them a chance to prove themselves.

Eisner To End His CNBC Show, Of His Own Accord

Former Disney chieftain Michael Eisner has terminated his talk show on CNBC of his own volition, the New York Post’s Peter Lauria discloses.

The show only drew about 100,000 viewers (not great, by even CNBC standards).

But Eisner seems to be able to call the shots, even though he was deposed as Disney king years ago.

Cooking Up Media Deals With Rachael Ray, and a Murdoch Scion Sighting

Dan Cox, on special assignment for FishbowlLA, covering the 2008 Sun Valley Media Conference.

Ken Lowe, President and CEO of the Scripps company (formerly Scripps Howard) was morose at the bar in Sun Valley Lodge late last night. He was lamenting the foreboding loss of the printed written word in media. What better than to complain about the internet to a half-drunk blogger.

Lowe was keen however on discussing the mega-investment Scripps has in chef extraordinaire and rising media starlet Rachael Ray, who ironically was at the other end of the bar drinking up the joint with her agent, William Morris’s Jim Wiatt.

Wiatt had just left a table with deposed Viacom exec Tom Freston (who is here with a company called Firefly 3).

Luckily for the bar hoppers, Viacom chief Sumner Redstone was nowhere to be seen, otherwise fisticuffs at dawn.

In another corner Rupert Murdoch‘s kid James, former head of Sky TV, was mingling with journos, one of whom came back to our group explaining how young Murdoch had been roommates in college with Post managing editor Jesse Angelo. So the Post has a nice in with young Murdoch.

Forget that dad owns the paper.
