An innumerable number of entertainment reporting routines seem utterly pointless today in light of the devastating news coming out of Newtown, Connecticut. Including the well-worn practice of compiling celebrity Twitter reactions.

The first wave of such coverage relating to today’s mass shooting appeared on PMC website hollywoodlife.com and media watchdog gossipcop.com. In each case, the first comment left by a reader suggests this is no time to be cluttering up the Internet with the republished Newtown thoughts of people like Kim and Khloe Kardashian.

As far as FishbowlLA is concerned, the following snippet from Robert Blake’s remarkable Wednesday interview on Piers Morgan Tonight is the media-analysis quote of the week:

“I would have assumed that you and that guy in your ear would trust me. And if you don’t, then we’d better start talking about The Little Rascals.”

Blake was responding to Morgan’s suggestion that he was perhaps not being entirely truthful about his recollections of the May 2005 murder of his wife Bonnie Lee Bakley. At age 78, the actor remains a barn-busting Hollywood original, not to mention the first and likely last guest to show up on Morgan’s show wearing the combo of A Clockwork Orange hat and V-neck tank top.

CNN has officially ended its 87-year relationship with Larry King.

No, we kid the King. He was with CNN for more than 25 years.

After ceding his daily talk show to Piers Morgan in 2011, King stayed on at the network to produce a series of special shows. But the network announced yesterday that it would no longer be airing those specials.

King’s last show–A Larry King Special: Dinner With the Kings–aired this past December.

Howard Stern Hired as America’s Got Talent Judge

A month after CNN host Piers Morgan quit as judge on NBC’s America Got Talent, syndicated radio host Howard Stern was hired as his replacement.

How much pull does Stern have? The show is moving from Los Angeles to New York in order to accommodate the shock jock.

“Howard Stern’s larger-than-life personality will bring a thrilling new dynamic to ‘America’s Got Talent’ starting this summer,” said Paul Telegdy, president of alternative and late-night programming at NBC. “He’s a proven innovator and his track record in broadcasting is truly remarkable. Howard is very passionate about this show and is fully committed to its future success.”

Piers Morgan Thought Patrice O’Neal Was a ‘She’

Earlier this week, comedian Patrice O’Neal passed away from complications due to a stroke he suffered in October.

CNN host Piers Morgan noted on his nightly talk show that it was a sad day for comedy as he tossed to a clip from Late Night with Jimmy Fallon to show how funny “she” was.

Good job. Next time, take the two seconds to watch the clip before you toss to it.

Howard Stern Addresses America’s Got Talent Rumors

Rumors have been flying about who would replace CNN host Piers Morgan on America’s Got Talent after he announced last week that he was quitting the show due to his busy schedule.

Howard Stern, who is reportedly in talks with NBC for the position, addressed the rumors Monday on his nationally syndicated morning talk show:

“Everyone knows I love ‘America’s Got Talent. I think it’s the greatest and I would be certainly honored to sit with Howie [Mandel] and Sharon [Osbourne] and judge these lunatics. I take show business very seriously. If I was a judge on there, there would be no nonsense whatsoever. I would be there for the talent. I would be there to actually find somebody good I am not the next judge. I have no deal with ‘America’s Got Talent’… I’m not going to comment if I’m in negotiations… I don’t comment on negotiations.”

Piers Morgan Quitting America’s Got Talent

CNN talk show host Piers Morgan announced Wednesday he was quitting as judge of NBC’s America’s Got Talent.

“I’ve been a judge since the show began six years ago, I’ve loved every single second, but I’ve discovered that juggling, to my surprise, really is a bit more difficult than I thought,” he said on Piers Morgan Tonight . “So I’m gonna focus on what will be a huge year here at CNN, with the upcoming election.”

Morgan also had a special message for the Academy as they search for a new host of the 2012 Oscars.

“Well, members of the Academy, I’m available. My schedule just cleared a bit, because I can exclusively reveal that I’m leaving America’s Got Talent.”

Chelsea Handler to Piers Morgan: ‘That’s a Good Question’

Piers Morgan has taken a lot of heat for his generally less than spectacular TV ratings, but he has repeatedly reminded his critics that he is in it for the long haul and that a full year on the job is required for any worthwhile evaluation of his CNN takeover.

Tonight, he chats with someone at the opposite end of the popularity contest spectrum, Chelsea Handler. The author, E! personality, and live performer remains unstoppable, the current inarguable Queen of All Media. At one point, Morgan asks Handler – “How many times have you been properly in love?”

“That’s a good question, actually,” she replies, before revealing that the total number of relationships that belong in such a hallowed category is two. One of these, former E! programming chief Ted Harbert, is now a boss of Morgan’s via Time Warner’s recently announced partnership with Comcast.

Looks like James O’Keefe‘s latest prank has not only gotten NPR‘s president to resign, it’s gotten Andrew Breitbart back in the national spotlight. Breitbart was on Piers Morgan‘s show last night talking about his protege’s capers, and the left wing bias that prevents them from being properly acknowledged. We thought the Shirley Sherrod incident would finally send Breitbart to the media glue factory, but now he’s back galloping around like nothing happened–saying calculated, counterintuitive things like “the best coverage on this incident has been NPR. It’s been impeccable…I respect NPR more than you would actually think.” And he’s actually right about the bias against this latest O’Keefe prank.

Gervais also expressed confidence that the celebrity attendees of the ceremony have a sense of humor about his jabs. On mega-star Johnny Depp, Gervais mused:

Well, we can say one thing about Piers Morgan‘s new show, he’s already brought Leno-bashing back into style. Howard Stern was Morgan’s second ever guest last night, and went off on a pretty impressive anti-Jay Leno tirade. Lot of history there. Leno stole longtime Stern guy “Stuttering John” Melendez and brought him to work on the “Tonight Show” over a decade ago. Stern’s visceral reaction to Leno was one of the few moments he broke character last night. Guy knows how to hold a grudge.

Hanging Headlines on Larry’s Suspenders

We can’t really blame the media for stooping to the obvious wardrobe analogy when framing this week’s unending scroll of Larry King Live send-off articles and best-of moment remembrances. Still, it’s kind of funny to see just how often the pieces strap on the wording.

How do you say suspenders in French? The word is bretelles. But on this side of the world leader pond, the Agence France Press headline reads “Veteran CNN Host Larry King Hangs Up Suspenders.” And so it goes.

BrandChannel.com snaps them to signal the end of the Larry King era. Heck, even CNN itself uses suspender phraseology on the top right-hand side of its LKL page to tease tomorrow night’s star-studded send-off.

If we were Piers Morgan, we would definitely be pondering the proper wardrobe follow-up. Can you say, pipe?
