Actor Rob Lowe is getting absolutely hammered around the web for his attempt at sports reporting yesterday. Manning’s father and agent denied Lowe’s reporting to USA Today. Lowe is apparently friendly with Colts owner Jim Irsay–who is the presumed source of the tweet heard round the sports world.

Not sure how Lowe’s tweet is different from the thousands of reports we heard in the run-up to Lebron James‘ “decision,” that had him going everywhere from the Chicago Bulls to the Death Star to play alongside Emperor Palpapatine. Remember though, everyone made fun of Stephen A. Smith for reporting out-of-the-blue that Lebron was going to Miami. And we know how that turned out.

DC Mayor Pounds Hollywood Pavement

Understandably, the decision by HBO to shoot its new series Veep in Baltimore rather than Washington D.C. has put the latter city’s film office on alert. After all, in the program, Julia Louis-Dreyfus stars as the Vice President.

To bang the drum for D.C.’s contribution to Transformers: Dark Side of Moon and general availability as a location, Beltway mayor Vince Gray (pictured) took time out from this week’s U.S. Conference of Mayors to meet with representatives from several Hollywood studios. All this gave Washington City Paper reporter Benjamin R. Freed a platform for that rarest of journalistic utterances, an envious look from DC at LA:

Excuse us for sounding jealous, but Southern California can really seem to have it all. Today’s weather in downtown Los Angeles—if there is such a thing—is a balmy, low-humidity 75 degrees. (The weather here today is too depressing to print.) Last weekend’s “Carmageddon” came and went with not a bang but a whimper, while highway construction in the DMV seems to be an eternal struggle. And yesterday, they even got our mayor and film commissioner.

Oprah’s California Neighborhood Gets Second Weekly Newspaper

Can you imagine what the Christmas tips in Montecito might be for newspaper delivery boys and girls? That vaunted teen profession may generally be going the way of the fax cover page, but at least in the privileged Santa Barbara hood of Oprah Winfrey, Rob Lowe, Dennis Miller, and many other celebs, the newspaper business is still good.

On June 10th, the Montecito Journal will be joined by a second free weekly newspaper, the Montecito Messenger. Heading up the mid-June competitor is a pretty interesting trio—The Daily Sound owner Jeremy Gordon, documentary filmmaker Sam Tyler, and former Journal reporter Judy Forman. Per a report in the Santa Barbara Independent:

Tyler — who directed Citizen McCaw , which chronicled the meltdown of the [Santa Barbara] News-Press — explained the new paper would be more politically mainstream and less conservative than the Journal, that it would provide home delivery, and that Messenger editors would not comment critically, as the Journal sometimes does, about its own letters to the editor.

For FishbowlLA’s money, the most fascinating part of Susan King‘s LA Times interview with actor Rob Lowe are the details about his new day-to-day job as overseer of Miramax. That’s right; the former Brat Pack member has graduated to the green light brigade.

Thanks to the actor’s business partnership with Colony Capital‘s Tom Barrack, Lowe is in on the ground floor at Miramax’s Santa Monica offices, after the company became the first acquisition of Colony’s media fund. He’s presently helping figure out which movies can find new life:

“It’s really obvious that it’s the one thing I would be able to bring to the table with my area of expertise navigating the relationships with Hollywood,” Lowe said. “The deal just closed 90 days ago and we have been culling from the 250 books and scripts in various stages of development that Harvey and Bob [Weinstein] spent untold millions getting to this point. We have incoming calls from people who know we have the rights to things. It’s really exciting.”

Schwarzenegger Corrals Rob Lowe For Chinese/Anglo Summit

California Governor and resident superstar Arnold Schwarzenegger nabbed actor Rob Lowe, who had done some stumping for Schwarzenegger during the recall back in 2003, to help egg on Chinese/American relations at the Governor’s summit on climate change, the L.A. Times reports.

“I thought it was really special that the Chinese were coming,” Lowe said in an interview, noting that the communist state often turns down requests to attend such conferences. “It was one of those days it was great to be in show business.”

Burning Down The Houses…

Over 100 homes in Montecito have been lost and thousands of acres burned in what is being called ‘The Tea House fire’ or the Tea Fire (depending on your source) because of the structure at the point of origin. Reporting for the LA Times is staffer Molly Hennessy-Fiske…who has yet to miss covering a fire in the Southland. Suspicious? Wasn’t Clark Kent always covering Super Man sightings?

Speaking of being on the scene, Wonkette editor Ken Layne writes about his experience on a vaca in Santa Barbara on LAist:

Mansions and compounds literally exploded as we creeped south on the 101. The Santa Barbara radio stations faded out. I switched to the L.A. news stations, 1070 and 980, both of which were inexplicably reporting that the estates owned by Oprah Winfrey and Rob Lowe were safe. Idiots.

Hello, that’s how we roll in LA, have to report the important stuff first.
