Paramount Pictures, perhaps getting a dig into former partner DreamWorks, has pushed back the potential Oscar nominee Jamie Foxx and Robert Downey Jr.‘s “The Soloist” from March 13 to April 24 of next year, Variety reports.
DreamWorks was caught off guard in October when Paramount pushed back the release of “The Soloist” from this year to March 13 at the 11th hour, thus depriving it of Oscar consideration.
The Joe Wright-directed film was originally to have opened Nov. 21.
In the April 24 slot, “Soloist” will open one week before the official start of the summer box office, which is theoretically considered primetime for moviegoing.
DreamWorks and Paramount had a mutually agreeable division last month when they announced the distribution splits for the next two year’s worth of film product.
“The Soloist” is based on a series of articles by Los Angeles Times columnist Steve Lopez and tells the story of a homeless schizophrenic musician’s dream to play at Walt Disney Concert Hall.
“The Soloist,” starring Robert Downey Jr. and Jamie Foxx and based on a series of L.A. Times columns, won’t be given a 2008 release, thus disqualifying it for the Oscars, according to several outlets.
Sources say Viacom is under financial pressure and is unwilling to spend the cash to release the film, which has been discussed as a potential Oscar winner.
But it may be a moot point as the film was originally slated for a Nov. 21 release, but will now bow on March 13, 2009.
DreamWorks, which produced the film, had no comment, but insiders said execs are very disappointed by the move even though they concede it could benefit the film’s box office by distancing it from a crowded year-end field.
Directed by Joe Wright (“Atonement”), “Soloist” is based on a series of Los Angeles Times columns by Steve Lopez about a homeless schizophrenic musician’s dreams of playing at Walt Disney Concert Hall.
Whenever a movie’s release date is changed in such a manner, there is a risk the media will read it as a vote of no-confidence. Still, it had generated strong buzz in early screenings.
However, it was not clear if “Soloist” might receive an Academy-qualifying run before Dec. 31, notes The Hollywood Reporter.
“We decided it’s a commercial movie that will play well in the spring, and we’ll give it an aggressive wide release then,” Paramount vice chairman Rob Moore said.
Cheadle will step in to play Jim Rhodes, Tony Stark’s best friend who would also become the armor-clad hero War Machine.
Although there was no comment from Marvel Studios, The Hollywood Reporter says that sources close to the deal reported the negotiations fell through with Howard over financial differences, among other things.
The character of Rhodes is expected to play a larger part in “Iron Man 2.”
Justin Theroux is writing the screenplay with Jon Favreau to return as director and Robert Downey Jr. to step in again as Stark/Iron Man. Gwyneth Paltrow also is expected to be back as Stark’s assistant, Pepper Potts.
Everybody is talking about Robert Downey Jr. in blackface … blah, blah, blah. You’ve heard it all before. But have you heard it told to you by your dorky ninth-grade biology teacher? Slate makes the over-discussed topic of Tropic Thunder even that much more unbearable to listen to by presenting it as a history lesson. Enjoy.
