WEHOville.com Publisher Puts Himself Out There with ‘Ask a Gay’

Take my column, please. That has pretty much been the approach espoused by WEHOville.com publisher Henry “Hank” Scott with his weekly column “Ask a Gay.”

Patterned after OC Weekly editor Gustavo Arellano‘s “¡Ask a Mexican!,” Scott’s tongue-in-cheek responses to emailed questions from readers are a bold and brash attempt to connect with a major part of the WeHo constituency. Is it working? We’re not sure, but the format certainly has fun leapfrogging over usual letter-from-the-publisher boundaries. Here for example is how Scott began a recent response to a woman asking whether celebrities still need today to worry about staying in the closet:

So you’re asking me if Tom Cruise is gay? Don’t know. Haven’t slept with him. And seriously, he’s so not my type (I like ‘em edgy and have a thing for shaved heads)…

OWN Restructuring Results in 30 Pink Slips

The Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN) laid off 30 employees in Los Angeles and New York Monday as the network faces another round of restructuring. This time around, the suits from Discovery Communications are coming in to help oversee operations.

The Los Angeles Times has the details:

The move comes as OWN continues to struggle to find its voice. Launched in January 2011, OWN has already cost Discovery more than $300 million. The channel’s performance has been so weak that there has even been speculation, denied by insiders at the network’s parent companies, that if the situation doesn’t improve soon the plug could be pulled.

Oprah’s OWN Ratings Aren’t So Hot

It’s only been two months, so we’re not sure how much to read into this, but Oprah’s network OWN isn’t doing very well in the ratings. In fact, it’s getting its butt kicked. OWN is averaging about 135,000 viewers at any given time, far lower than the network that preceded it: Discovery Health. Oprah’s ratings are a full 10 percent lower then her predecessor’s, according to a big Sunday story in the New York Times.

Of the seven shows that had their premieres in January, the stand-out was “Ask Oprah’s All-Stars,” a four-part panel discussion featuring Dr. Mehmet Oz, Dr. Phil McGraw and Suze Orman. The flop was “Your OWN Show,” a “Survivor”-style competition to groom a new talk show host for OWN.

Nazarena Velez–Dancing With the Stars in Argentina /Station Fined for Sexy Strip

Down in Argentina, Nazarena Velez put on a show on Dancing with the Stars (Bailando por un sueno) that makes Janet Jackson look like the singing nun. Not only was the presenting station fined by the Argentinian version of the FCC, so were all the gossip shows that ran excerpts.

Ben Silverman might want to sign Velez instead of Rosie O’Donnell.
