Is Focus Features Giving Schenectady the Shaft?

There’s a really ugly Hollywood PR storm brewing in Schenectady, New York. One that Focus Features would do well to quell asap.

Per an article by Paul Grondahl in Albany’s Times-Union newspaper, city officials, locals and at least one area native prominently associated with The Place Beyond the Pines are all mystified by the apparent lack of any plans for a promised spring premiere at Proctors. The Ryan Gosling-Bradley Cooper drama was filmed all over Schenectady in the summer of 2011; the building on the poster crop at right for example is a Trustco bank branch at the corner of State Street and Brandywine Avenue. From Grondahl’s report:

“I’m annoyed with these guys,” said Philip Morris, CEO of Proctors. He said the producers and distributor are not returning his calls, even though his staff assisted the production…

Fizziology Stirs Hollywood A-Lister Drink with Expansive Social Media App

This is fascinating stuff. Variety film editor Josh Dickey got a first-hand look at a social media intelligence tool of a kind that we will be hearing a lot more about in the coming months and years.

CastTyper comes from the good folks at Fizziology, a leading entertainment market research firm. It goes a little deeper by categorizing info shared about actors on social media into the groupings of “physical appearance, emotional resonance, intellectual prowess and power of personality.” Of the four examples Dickey was shown, he says the one that resonated most involved Brad Pitt‘s Moneyball co-star:

Fizziology found that as audiences focused on Jonah Hill‘s weight loss and dramatic acting chops, they lost sight of his lovable personality… Some fans even openly complained about Hill’s weight loss, saying it would make him less funny and lovable; others felt offput by watching a skinny Hill promote Moneyball, in which he was still seen as overweight.

Aussie Personality Maude Garrett Relocating to LA

Every Sunday, Hollywood-based Australian syndicated radio show The Hot Hits counts down LA’s top 35 songs and features interviews with various celebrities. Starting February 3, the program will have a new host.

Maude Garrett (pictured), who broke through Down Under in 2005 via the national talent search Fresh Meat and has hosted various programs on Nickelodeon Australia as well as the Channel 9 reality TV program The Pursuit, is moving to LA for the new gig. Per the Optus MCM Media Group announcement:

The self-confessed pop-culture brainiac and video game fanatic will be moving to Los Angeles and she couldn’t be more excited about it. “It’s my dream job!” Maude says. “‘I’m able to completely indulge in my love of pop culture, from music to movies and gossip! Moving to LA to attend premieres, interview the biggest celebrities and talk about my obsession with video games…. somebody pinch me!”

Author of Christian Bale Bio Returns to Manhattan Beach Stomping Grounds

From 1992 to 2002, Scottish-born, Chinese-descended and Canadian-raised movie fan Harrison Cheung rode the ups and downs of Christian Bale’s pre-Batman career. It was an odyssey that spanned the earliest days of Internet marketing and relocated him from applauding Bale from afar in Toronto to working closely with the future superstar and actor’s Adam West lookalike dad at a home in Manhattan Beach.

This Friday, Cheung will be back in Manhattan Beach for an 11 a.m. signing event at the local Barnes & Noble for his new biography Christian Bale: The Inside Story of the Darkest Batman (co-written with Nicola Pittam). For the past five years, the author has been working in Austin as an Internet marketing strategist for IBM.

After a busy appearance on the Comic-Con conference floor last Friday, Cheung tells FishbowlLA via telephone that he’s reminded of a famous observation once made by another author, Sandra Tsing Loh. “She said that if you don’t make it in Hollywood by the time you’re 40, you need to either open a yoga studio or move to Austin,” he jokes.

Remarkably, this is the first Bale biography. Released May 29, the book offers fascinating glimpses of the relationship the actor had with his late dad (who died in 2003) and that patriarch’s very shaky financial management skills. It also provides a time-capsule look at the earliest days of the Internet.

A Whirlwind of Ryan Gosling ‘News’

One of the most effective current ways to generate sexy Web traffic numbers is to insert actor Ryan Gosling into the mix. Whether any other detail in the report is confirmed is besides the point.

Over the weekend, UK’s The Daily Mail floated the idea that he was breaking up with girlfriend Eva Mendes (since denied via US Weekly). Meanwhile, across the English channel, French artist Pascal Witasek mocked up a poster of what the Disney biopic Walt might look like if the actor was cast in the lead role.

But the wildest Gosling “news” trail of the past few days was sparked Monday in Auckland, New Zealand. After a clothing store tweeted that the actor had paid a visit, citizens went wild, locally trending the hashtag #NZGoslingHunt on Twitter and generating MSM media coverage with their efforts.

EW‘s Kristen Baldwin on the Ryan Gosling Factor

How exactly did Ryan Gosling become the man this year? Sure, fans of The Notebook always loved him, but who else was really checking for him back in, oh, 2007?

According to Entertainment Weekly executive editor Kristen Baldwin, Gosling’s ascent is no accident. She says quality work + star presence = crazy buzz.

“He’s a star because he’s given three amazing performances this year,” said Baldwin in our Media Beat interview. He’s incredibly, ridiculously handsome — like, it’s almost offensive how handsome he is — and then he’s just kind of a character. He stopped a fight on the street, you know?”

Squashing a beatdown can indeed increase your Twitter mentions, but Baldwin says aspiring A-listers don’t have to resort to such tactics to land in the pages of EW. “We don’t really get into their personal lives… we wanna talk about their work.”

In the shadow of TIME magazine’s anointment of the generic protester as 2011′s “Person of the Year,”columnist Joel Stein has engineered his very own personal side-honor category.

After careful consideration, Stein decided that the combined impact of four very different movies and bravura personal behavior outweighed such troublesome downsides as Canadian origins, a Mouseketeer connection and some homeschooling. As a result, Ryan Gosling is his choice for “Coolest Person of the Year:”

We have no idea how Gosling will deal with this honor. A tattoo seems like the obvious way to go, though a commemorative diorama would probably be good enough for a spot on Access Hollywood. But that’s not why we pick a Coolest Person of the Year. We do it for the journalism.

Potter Breaks Bond Record
Harry Potter used his magic skills to generate billions in box-office receipts – to the tune of $4.47 billion worldwide – making it the most lucrative film franchise of all time. Warner Bros. announced the record-breaking Potter news Monday, reported today in THR. What’s stellar about the record is that the studio still has two Potter pics yet to come.

Bosworth in Book Adaptation
Kate Bosworth has signed on for the title role in Veronika Decides to Die, a film adaptation based on Paulo Coelho’s best-selling book of the same name. THR reports out of Toronto that Bosworth will star in the pic, to be directed by Emily Young and written by Larry Gross.

Kennedy Center Announces Honorees
Diana Ross, Brian Wilson, Leon Fleisher, Steve Martin and Martin Scorsese have been tapped as recipients of the Kennedy Center Honors. The fete, scheduled for Dec. 2 and airing on CBS, is the 30th annual edition of the star-studded awards gala.

Toronto Reviews
Variety takes its critical eye to film festival pics Lars and the Real Girl starring Ryan Gosling and Julie Taymor’s Across the Universe. Lars - a look inside a small town where a young man introduces a sex doll as his girlfriend – is described as a “gentle comic drama” that will likely have a more successful ancillary life, while Universe is “hard to dislike but hard to take seriously.”
