Will CAA Drop Every Client Over 35? Industry Nexus Has the Scoop

Industry Nexus has a real treasure in Mali Perl. Pearl has somehow found out what other aging clients are getting the axe, ala Ed Limato and his stable of geriatrics. The juice:

From: Bryan Lourd and Rick Nicita
To: All CAA Staff
Re: New Direction

In light of the change that’s sweeping the industry, CAA, as always, takes the lead. We embrace the generational shift taking place and will be moving away from older clients to focus on a younger client base that reflects the tastes of today’s audience. We are amicably parting ways with several longtime clients including Al Pacino, Meryl Streep, Anthony Hopkins, Sally Field, Annette Bening, Robin Williams, Robert Redford, Jane Fonda, and Robert De Niro. We are proud of the role CAA has played in helping these great stars of yesterday pave the way for great stars of tomorrow like Mischa Barton, Jessica Simpson, Rachel Bilson, Zach Braff, Zac Efron, and Sanjaya. We wish them all the best during their golden years and hope to visit them soon at the Motion Picture Home.

What a funny old world we live in.

Sanjaya is still here, and Surya (The Apprentice) doesn’t like that.

What an insanely hectic week. Here’s a look back at our favorite media stories:

Sam Zell Buys Tribune: All hell breaks loose in the react and next-day story world, including a number of pieces about how David Geffen may or may not still be in the game. Nikki Finke wants us to know that she published the story days before anyone else. And by days, she means hours (don’t let the date on the story fool you, this piece was online April 2).

Sanjaya: Has no talent, but lots of hair. Forget American Idol, let’s elect him President!

Art Gets Ugly At KCRW: DC-based reporter Tyler Green set his sights on the apparently kick-back-loving Edward Goldman, who hosts an art show on the station.

Sanjaya and his Supporters–Birds of a Feather

Sanjaya certainly has some loyal supporters. Ken Levine’s not one of them:

Sanjaya–Andy Garcia meets Tinkerbell. America’s joke.

Clint, the webmaster for the Sanjaya Fan Network, wrote us a little note, which we’ve dissected:

“I noticed you while prowling the web for more sites about the pop culture phenomenon of the year.”

(FBLA: Pop culture phenomenon of the next week.)

“I run www.sanajayfannetwork.com.”

(FBLA: Don’t misspell the name of your own site, if you want links.)

“It was designed with the hopes that we can all influence American Idol and make an otherwise dull season more interesting and perhaps see if Simon Cowell will really quit.”

(FBLA: Cowell will never quit.)

“Anyhoo I’m not sure what side of fence you are on surrounding Votefortheworst.com/Howard Stern pulling to get Sanjaya voted in as American Idol”

(FBLA: How can anyone not tell what side we’re on?)

Earlier:

Sanjaya: A Spunky 17 Year Old Liberace?

Tom O’Neil has lost his mind, or he will tonight when he defends Sanjaya on Keith Olbermann’s Countdown show.

O’Neil’s photo selection on his Gold Derby site makes his case for him, but over at MSNBC, he writes:

But it ain’t about the singing. It’s about putting on a show! And that spunky, little 17-year-old Liberace wannabe knows what he’s doing and is doing it with shrewd surrender and abandon.

And who doesn’t want to be a spunky little Liberace?

The Crying Girl on American Idol: Richard Rushfield Cheers Her Up

American Idol introduced the country to the crying girl. Richard Rushfield introduced himself to her, and discovers that she’s a 13 year-old from Riverside named Ashley. She likes Sanjaya, Melinda, Gina and Jordin.

Rushfield tries to bully her in to picking just one, but she’s too tough for him. TWOP called her Little Miss Sobshine. FBLA wonders if maybe she was a Kinks fan and was crying at what Sanjaya did to that song. Ray Davies, he ain’t.

Nancy Flanagan is a music teacher, and she thinks American Idol is just dreadful. She’s also discovered that people can be rude. Maybe she likes Sanjaya, too because we can’t explain why he’s still around.
