Downtown Mugging Thrusts LA Times Editor Into Challenging New Realm

This certainly ranks as one of the more unusual and jarring LA Times juxtapositions.

The same weekend (January 19-20) that Community News editor Dan Evans was viciously robbed in LA’s downtown arts district, his newspaper colleague Roger Vincent had an article in the Sunday edition about the transitioning nature of that very same neighborhood. Here’s how architect Scott Johnson, who previously lived in New York’s similarly made-over meatpacking district during the 1970s, framed the arts district:

“There are very rough patches,” said Johnson, who lives in a condominium on Industrial Street. “It’s muscular. It’s complicated. It’s interesting…” He calls it [the roughness] “authenticity” in a time when “we’re getting bombarded with fake stuff.”

Evans wrote frankly and openly over the weekend about the details of the violent incident and how the altercation has shaken his world. In a neighborhood that he and wife Donna, a Patch local editor, only just recently moved to.

A Web Site Devotes Itself To ‘Stopping Ben Lyons’

A person blogging under the name of “Scott Johnson” is so wildly offended by the very existence of E! personality (and At the Movies replacement) Ben Lyons that he created Stop Ben Lyons: Before He Destroys the Fabric of American Cinema, a virtually daily blog dedicated to tearing Lyons a new one:

“… the situation is just no longer tenable. Not only do I need a more serious film review show on TV, but more importantly BEN LYONS NEEDS TO BE STOPPED! He is making a mockery of one of the hallowed institutions of popular American film-going.”

The blog is interesting in that it’s not as mean-spirited as you might expect of a site devoted to the vehement destruction of another person’s career.

But we question how long this Scott Johnson can maintain this single-issue blog without becoming a bombed-out shell of his former self.

Don’t like Ben Lyons’ reviews, Scott? You’re not alone. But for your own sake, just change the channel… or better yet, e-mail us so we can psychoanalyze you in person!
