Your humble Fishie is a hard news junkie, so it took him a little while to notice that the LA Times recently debuted a new narrative romance column called “LA Affairs.” Seems a bit like a California take on the New York Times‘ “Modern Love” column. Back when I was in J-school in New York, “Modern Love” was always considered the place for young writers to break into the NYT. A fellow student of mine wrote an amazing piece about a Hatian woman who married a voodoo snake spirit in an elaborate ritual. So if LA now has the equivalent outlet, it can only be a good thing for young freelancers of the city.

If you’re brainstorming a pitch, we recommend friend of the Fishbowl Sophia Kercher‘s recent “LA Affairs” piece as a primer. The aforementioned voodoo snake marriage ceremony is pretty great too.

Sophia Kercher has been named the new associate editor of Pasadena Magazine.

“I’ve been in love with Pasadena ever since seeing the city’s jacaranda trees,” Kercher tells us. “I’m looking forward to uncovering the many narratives under those trees.”

She arrives at Pasadena after two and a half years as research editor for the Los Angeles Times Magazine. But this Fishie remembers her from her intern days at the LA Weekly.

It’s before noon. But we’re going to go ahead and give tweet o’ the day honors to the LA Times Magazine‘s Sophia Kercher–and Charles Bukowski. Bukowski is one of the few authors who is clear and concise enough to work on Twitter–who can distill his entire being into a sentence or two.

We also just got back from a road trip to San Francisco. So freeway as metaphor has been on our mind. We worked up an elaborate theory on two-lane freeways as indicative of our current political system.
