Current TV Bets on Progressive Radio Stars Bill Press, Stephanie Miller

During his time at MSNBC, programming executive David Bohrman took the bold step of giving radio personality Don Imus a TV simulcast. Those would turn out to be the earliest days of what is now a booming cable format, especially at Current, where Bohrman is currently president.

Added in March, the network’s six-hour “morning block” features three hours with Washington D.C. based Bill Press, followed by three more led from Burbank by Stephanie Miller. Intriguingly, Press remembers those Imus simulcast days well.

“At the time, Imus didn’t have a huge following nationwide, but he did in D.C.,” Press tells FishbowlLA via telephone earlier this week from the TCA. “In a sense, Bohrman is attempting to repeat his experiences at MSNBC with this Current morning block.”

Press says the expansion of his program to TV has brought only minor changes: he puts on a little powder each morning to reduce the glare and his producers are making an effort to up the number of in-studio guests. Miller on the other hand tells us that she goes straight from the radio show each day to a spinning class, so for her, it’s sweatpants and her naturally scrubbed complexion.

John Fugelsang Gets a Current TV Show

FishbowlLA was lucky enough to be at the Pantages this past weekend for the LA stop of Stephanie Miller’s “Sexy Liberal Comedy Tour.” Although she and radio compadre Hal Sparks were both excellent, the guy who really stole the show was another one of her radio-TV regulars, John Fugelsang.

Right on cue, Fugelsang announced this morning on Miller’s program broadcast live from the TCA that he is getting his own Current TV series in the fall, joining Miller, whose three-hour daily syndicated radio offering is now being broadcast. For the handsome young comedian and new father, this is a natural progression at the network, where he has appeared as a commentator and guest hosted for network personalities such as Eliot Spitzer and Jennifer Granholm.

From this morning’s accompanying release:

“We at Current are eager to bring John’s unique perspective on politics and the world around him to primetime,” commented Current TV chairman Al Gore. “He’s been a part of the Current family for a while now and we see just how much his voice resonates with our audience. His new show will nicely complement our growing lineup.”

LA Radio Host Heads Home with ‘Sexy Liberal Comedy Tour’

Without the benefit of national advertising, LA radio host Stephanie Miller has grossed over a million dollars this year with her “Sexy Liberal Comedy Tour” and says she and her cohorts are on track to be the nation’s top-selling comedy tour of 2011.

It all started in April, when Miller along with show contributors John Fuselgang and Hal Sparks traveled to Wisconsin to support the pro-union demonstrators. The show has since grown to a regular, twice-a-month sideline that will bring Lockport, New York native Miller back home to Shea’s Buffalo Performing Arts Center this weekend. Per a piece in The Buffalo News by Jane Kwiatkowski:

Miller described their stage performances as the radio show “without the FCC.” Roasting Republicans is a favored theme, especially after an election that she coined Operation Backlash. “There’s been a lot of Republican overreach, and I think there’s a lot of frustration out there,” she said.

Stephanie Miller: I’m Gay

We’re going to feign shock now: a liberal, comedian, radio talk show host is gay! Stephanie Miller has come out of the closet today. She was in the closet? Why? Anyway, she admitted this morning that she is a lesbian. We congratulate her on her new found sunlight.

That’s tough. When you’re a funny, liberal woman in the media you get called two things as an insult: a man and a lesbian. So we get why it would be no one’s business. But dude, it’s 2010. We live in a post-Will and Grace world. Come on already.

Stephanie Miller Retains Vagina, Votes Obama

Stephanie Miller, who we used to like, tells Larry King and former ABC anchor Carol Simpson:

I’m a woman. I don’t want to turn in my vajayjay for not supporting Hillary Clinton. I just think that she just can’t win.

If you want to refer to your vagina on national television, and you’d rather not use the C-word, please find an alternative expression. Personally, we’d refer to our ovaries. Because we’re una mujer de verdad.

As is Nora Ephron. Even though we make fun of her, and her fluctuating hormones, she’s got Hillary’s number:

I think she was once a truthful person and her lying skills were forged in the early years of her marriage, forged in the crucible of Bill’s infidelities and in her role as point person in dealing with them. This is what happens when you marry a narcissist: he spills the milk, you clean it up and your love grows. And then you end up a liar, just like him.
