Dave Karger Rolls Out Second Fandango Series at SXSW

Following his chronicling of 2012 film awards season via The Frontrunners, Fandango chief correspondent Dave Karger is down in Austin with the site’s senior director of PR Harry Medved and editor-in-chief Chuck Walton to officially launch his new Web series, Weekend Ticket. The program will debut on the site March 14 and feature SXSW interviews with Steve Carell, Jim Carrey, Olivia Wilde, Paul Walker, Josh Duhamel and Paul Rudd (or, as Andy Samberg so hilariously referred to Rudd during the Spirit Awards, Paul “Reeud”).

Karger hinted when we spoke with him not long ago that he would be making use of the formidable Nate Silver-like predictive data gathered from the site’s ticket buyers. Sure enough, Weekend Ticket will be sourcing a new weekly indicator also unveiled at SXSW:

“Fanticipation” ranks fan excitement around upcoming and current movies based on Fandango’s proprietary data collected from its online and mobile traffic, the social media engagement of its fans and its advance ticket sales…

LA Film Festival Reveals Partial Gala Schedule

Film Independent just released the preliminary gala schedule for this year’s LA Film Festival. Focus Features’ Seeking a Friend for the End of the World, Fox Searchlight’s Beasts of the Southern Wild, and AFFRM and Participant’s Middle of Nowhere are the latest films added to roster. Beasts and Middle of Nowhere have already earned acclaim after debuting at Sundance. Seeking a Friend for the End of the World–with Steve Carell, Keira Knightley, Rob Corddry, and Patton Oswalt, among others–will be making its world premiere.

Woody Allen‘s To Rome With Love will kick off the festival on June 14. More films should be announced shortly.

Dolores Hope Is Way Older Than Her Community Newspaper

There’s a rather funny juxtaposition in the current issue of free weekly community newspaper The Tolucan Times.

Dolores Hope, the widow of the guy who basically put the plush enclave of Toluca Lake on the map, recently turned 102. That’s more than 40 years older than the newspaper in which a fond write-up of the May 27th birthday girl can presently be found (The Tolucan Times was established in the early 1950s):

Much like her husband, she has been the living definition of her name — HOPE. “Fa i fate, no parole” in Italian means, “Do it, don’t talk about it.” Deeds always trumpet louder than words and Dolores Hope was the embodiment of that adage. Her life was an example of doing generous acts to elevate and improve the lives of others.

The SAG awards, which are not known as the Saggies, are usually predictable, but last night’s show found Little Miss Sunshine winning the ensemble category. Back to business as usual, Helen Mirren repeated her Golden Globes win for The Queen, and for another queen in a TV movie or miniseries. Steve Carell also won two, but we don’t think of them together.

Forest Whitaker, also a Globe winner, won again for his performace as Idi Amin in The Last King of Scotland. Both Mirren and Whitaker are also nominated for Oscars and they both play real people. Odd, isn’t it?

SAG Award Nominees Unveiled — Nation Yawns

Steve Carell and Leo DiCaprio lead the pack of performers with three nominations a piece. It would be weird/funny/quirky/newsworthy that Steve Carell and Leo DiCaprio share anything in common. But these are the SAG awards, the Hollywood equivalent of an El Torito gift-certificate employee incentive program, so we’ll move on.
