Bloomberg Businessweek Profiles Hollywood’s Go-to DC Guy

There’s an intriguing article in the new issue of Bloomberg Businessweek, hitting newsstands today. Written by Robert Schmidt, it’s all about Steven Ross, head of Washington organization The Artists & Athletes Alliance, which helps A-listers navigate Washington attractions and the halls of government.

He’s arranged a special tour of the National Gallery for Will Ferrell and family; gotten Foo Fighters frontman David Grohl and daughter into the Smithsonian. He also comes to LA every one in a while for some no-press-allowed outreach at the Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills:

An event in April featured Philippe Cousteau, who discussed the one-year anniversary of the Gulf oil spill and the environmental consequences from the Japanese disaster. Attendees included two actors from the CSI television shows, Jorja Fox and Omar Benson Miller, as well as former NFL player Marcellus Wiley.

Author Learns a Thing or Two About Hollywood Conservatives

The title of USC professor Steven Ross‘ upcoming book is hard to ignore – Hollywood Left and Right: How Movie Stars Shaped American Politics.

The concept is equally intriguing. He chooses to examine the topic by focusing on ten individuals: Charlie Chaplin, Edward G. Robinson, George Murphy, Ronald Reagan, Harry Belafonte, Jane Fonda, Charlton Heston, Warren Beatty, and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Ahead of the book’s publication in September via Oxford University Press, the Australian caught up with Ross in Sydney, where he was recently a visiting professor:

Ross found two things that defied conventional wisdom. First, conservatives had a longer history in Hollywood than liberals, beginning with MGM studio head Louis B. Mayer, who developed a relationship with the Republican party in the late 1920s, effectively turning MGM studios into a publicity wing.
