Musical Theater Duo Send Up LA’s Porn Industry

A good time should be had by all this Saturday at the Kirk Douglas Theater in Culver City when composer-lyricist Michael Friedman and playwright Bess Wohl present their cabaret-in-progress “A Pretty Filthy Evening.” The musical takes a frothy look at the San Fernando Valley’s most popular export, porn, with this weekend’s sneak featuring readings by the likes of Steven Weber and Ginger Lynn.

Via the LA Times blog “Culture Monster,” the duo recall their experiences researching the subject matter. Wohl says visiting the set of Not the Bradys XXX collapsed all childhood fantasies, while Friedman draws a crazy analogy:

Actually musical theater is very similar to porn. It’s a fantasy about attractive people who do cool things. It’s a place you go to learn what you like. Porn knows more than you do about what you want.

Ha ha. Also on tap February 5th: “porn charades,” which involves acting out X-rated film titles. San Fernando Jones and the Temple of Poon, anyone?
