Daytime Emmys Add Courtroom Category and Open Judging

Courtroom shows finally have their own Daytime Emmy with the addition of an Outstanding Legal/ Courtroom category. Tabloid Baby likes Christina Perez.

Steve Rogers of NATAS also announces that all nominations will be actually viewed:

We are proud to announce that, for the first time, all of those entered into the Daytime competition will have their achievements viewed by judges. Formerly, a paper ballot was utilized in our first round of voting, meaning only those who were nominated out of that round, ever actually had their materials viewed for judging purposes.

And thus, more judged are needed.

With this bold and important initiative, it is essential that we enlist as many qualified judges as possible. Therefore, we have left the judging application module of our Daytime Online system OPEN.

In order to be eligible to judge you MUST have national
credits in either Daytime or Primetime programming within the last five years. You may also participate as a judge if you have a significant body of work.

Submit yourself here.

Jessica Hahn–Too Racy for LA Times/Left out of Ron Leavitt’s Obit

Is there a new regime of Puritanism down on Spring Street? Besides bowdlerizing Earl Butz’s obituary and Sam Zell’s use of the vernacular, the LA Times tidies up the obit of Ron Leavitt, the recently departed creator Married with Children, the show everyone used to love to hate on FOX.

Tabloid Baby points out that Jessica Hahn, onetime playmate of televangelist Jim Bakker, had been Leavitt’s constant companion for the last 15 years.

AP/Chicago Tribune:

Leavitt died at his home in Los Angeles, said his fiancee, the model and actress Jessica Hahn.

LAT:

Leavitt died of lung cancer Sunday at his home in Sherman Oaks, said publicist Larry Winokur.

So, is a publicist more respectable, in a family paper, than a fiancee? She’s not even mentioned as a survivor.

WGA 08 Strike: Discoveries

The NY Times discovers Nina Bargiel.

Tabloid Baby points out that globalization has been very, very good to Aasif Mandvi, a Daily Show <strike>scab </strike> correspondent:

I don’t cross picket lines because they don’t start picketing until, like, way in the afternoon, and I’m home by then.

Justine Bateman explains why residuals are so important.
She’s a little sketchy on some things, though:

The corporations will want everybody in the country to have the highest speed Internet so they can deliver everything over broadband.

Heidi Ross wants the strike to end now.

Fans of Lost have no clue about anything.:

I do find it terribly aggrivating that writers have become more obssessed with money (hence the strike), than the art of their work.

Tom Brokaw Scholarship–Too Cheap?

Tom Brokaw’s not dead yet, it just seems that way. He’s offering two chintzy scholarships–$7500 each!–to the children of NBC/MSNBC staffers, perma-lancers with 7 years of service to the networks and associated below the line types.

Tabloid Baby has the memo and points out that $7500 barely covers the tab at Brokaw’s alma mater, the University of South Dakota at Vermilion. It would probably pay for about a week at Dartmouth, where he gave a commencement address in 2006. Maybe the crowd at the Sooner-Cornhusker game had the right idea?

But then, TB has a grudge against Brokaw, since learning that the aging newscaster doesn’t write his own books.

Who’ll Get Johnny Grant’s Penthouse Now?

Tabloid Baby takes a totally original view of the recent death of Johnny Grant:

he was murdered for his apartment

Grant lived in a two-bedroom, two-bath penthouse apartment in the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel with breathtaking views–for only $2,000 a month. He was assured of the place for as long as he lived.

Far-fetched? Think again.

Scott Collins Unreal on Reality TV

Tabloid Baby schools clueless LAT columnist Scott Collins in the true meaning of reality TV buzzword Frankenbite. Collins wrote:

Editors routinely use “frankenbites,” out-of-context quotes that illustrate points the speakers never intended to make…

Collins is just plain wrong, as TB explains:

A Frankenbite is not an out-of-context quote. It’s a line of audio that is cobbled, stitched and patched together with words and phrases from different unrelated sentences. Just as Frankenstein was assembled from parts of different bodies.

There’s plenty of other misinformation about reality TV and writers, as well. Collins quotes a blithely uninformed Paul Haggis about reality TV workers, who make a “few hundred dollars a week”, which isn’t accurate. The WGA might not like to think about the members who toil in reality, but there’s not enough work on scripted shows to go around. Where does collins think HGTV, Food Network and Discovery get their programming?

Michael Lohan Still Pitching Reality Show

Tabloid Baby takes a break from the picket lines, where Nikki Finke’s* been a topic of conversation, to point out that Michael Lohan is ready and willing to serve in the ranks of reality tv.

And Pops Lohan wrote the song you hear, as a response to Lindsay’s Daughter to Father.

*Writers are cranky that Finke’ reported the studios claim that the WGA walked out on them during negotiations.

Joey Bishop, Last of The Rat Pack, Dead at 89

Joey Bishop, the comic who hung and swung with the legendary Rat Pack, died at his Newport Beach home. His death was announced by publicist Warren Cowan.

He was the group’s last surviving member. Peter Lawford died in 1984, Sammy Davis Jr. in 1990, Dean Martin in 1995, and Frank Sinatra in 1998.

Tabloid Baby has some cool pix.

Teresa Strasser Tattles on Tabloid Baby

Teresa Strasser might want to rethink playing the “he hurt my feelings” card. As Adam Carolla’s 2nd side kick on his radio show, she did a bit about how Tabloid Baby (not that she named the site) was mean about her. Which is pretty rich, coming from a woman who works for TMZ TV. Her segment is the one called Too Hot For Radio.

Even sadder, the fans on the Adam Carolla message boards think she’s an idiot as well. Strasser used to have a career. Why did she take either of these jobs?

Israel Baseball League Story Scores A Hit /Editors Cry “Foul”

At Poynter, Alan Abbey writes about the recent flap over Elli Wohlgelernter’s Israel Baseball League story and who published it when. Tabloid Baby jumped the gun, and put the story up before the various papers who bought the pieces from Wohlgelernter. The unintended takeaway for freelancers is this:

Wohlgelernter sold the story to four U.S. Jewish newspapers, including the LA Jewish Journal and NY Jewish Week. He worked a “local angle” into as many slightly differing versions as possible, by quoting Jewish and non-Jewish players from the newspapers’ home towns.

Resourceful, no? But the story went live too soon, and the “real” papers were upset–although they could have slammed it up on their own websites, and gotten some linky love from TB, Luke Ford, etc.

Tabloid Baby’s readers were pretty vocal about the actual story.

As the saying goes, “Three Jews, four opinions.”

Tabloid Baby is leaving TVgasm, the obsessive viewer site owned by Bunim Murray, producers of Real World, et al. Seems some of the regular readers weren’t happy. And then there’s the charges of ethics violations (on a recap site? Spare us.)

The site moderator explains:

After writing for us since the olden days it is time to part ways with……. Tabloid baby. I know, I know…It’ll be ok. but the time has come to move on. We have a new newsgasm writer whos going to take over and will pick up where he left off. Unfortunately, she will be funny and not pot stirrer so for those types of posts you will all have to take a walk down memory lane and read TBs old posts.

TB’s editor in chief says:

They said we were mean! They’d get offended if we wrote that Kirstie Alley was fat or that Rachel Dratch was homely. Then they all retreated to the site forums, where the housewives and shut-ins flirt with the high school boys.

Why doesn’t B-M Prods. just get all those RealWorldRoadRules alumni to write/post/recap/read? Coral would be great or at least cheap.

TVgasm sure isn’t TWOP.

All The Lohans, All The Angst

Tabloid Baby has been working overtime, trying to straighten out the whole Lohan clan.

Michael Lohan is out of the joint and back on the street, but not in the way you think.

Lindsay Lohan should find a new crowd to hang with.

Villaraigosa’s Staff Knew About Affair With Salinas: Tax Dollars at Work?

Tabloid Baby, who really can’t let go of a story, reports that surprise! Mayor Villaraigosa was unable to attend the Pacific Palisades Fourth of July Parade. He was, uh, otherwise engaged. Idle thought: Rocky Delgadillo must be grinning from ear to ear.

Speaking of busy, how did Antonio-our-ownio manage to appear all over town and still keep Mirthala Salinas smiling? The LA Times claims that his staff knew about the affair for months.

November 2005 Villaraigosa was spotted at Salinas’ Sherman Oaks condo complex.

March 20, 2006 Salinas in NYC, covering Villaraigosa, talking educational reform with Mayor Bloomberg.

June 2006, Salinas in Sacramento, covering Villaraigosa as he lobbied for support of his LAUSD takeover. Photos of the two are taken, causing worry among his staff about leaks of the growing relationship.

September 2006 Villaraigosa is regularly seen at Cedars-Sinai, visiting Salinas’ mother, a cancer patient there.

December 2006 Villaraigosa loses his Deputy Mayor for Communications, Cecile Ablack. Hmmm. Sean Clegg, part of the inner circle takes over the job.

Perhaps the Mayor should have stayed with photo-ops like this.
