Any writer/blogger/ranter can tell you that a good lede or opening line to your story is always tough to come up with.

That’s why I had to take the time to shout out TheWrap’s Tim Kenneally for his hilarious (and semi-insensitive) lede from Tuesday regarding Sherman Hemsley‘s delayed burial:

“The Jeffersons” star Sherman Hemsley won’t be moving on down, into the ground until at least November, it appears.

Kudos, Tim, though I’m sure he received his share of complaints from people who can’t find the humor in this sort of thing.

TheWrap Reporter Gets Slapped for Tosh Final Para

There’s a healthy debate going on in the comments to Tim Kenneally’s TheWrap article about the rape jokes made by Daniel Tosh at The Laugh Factory and the comedian’s subsequent Twitter apology.

Reader GauchoGreg however also takes issue with the final sentence of Kenneally’s report – ‘Clowns with better senses of humor than he has, hopefully.’ Complains GG:

Tim Kenneally, is this an editorial or news? By good journalistic standards you should have left your thoughts out of the last line and simply reported the facts. Your insertion of your opinion of Tosh’s humor makes me question how reliable your article is or it if is slanted. We don’t need more slanted news – we need honest news (even if entertainment news like this). Think about holding those opinions to drinks in bars where your friends can respond to whether your opinion is valid or misguided.

A Picture Worth a Thousand Bylines

Since launch in 2009, TheWrap has proven to be a fertile training ground for entertainment journalists. Among the earliest examples of reporters who worked under Sharon Waxman before moving on to other outlets are Amy Kaufman (now with the LA Times), Josef Adalian (Vulture), Hunter Walker (New York Observer), Josh Dickey (Variety), Jeff Sneider (Variety) and Dominic Patten (Deadline).

Still, with the recent departure of Jason Scoggins, Cindy Kaplan and Joshua L. Weinstein for Film Funds LLC, the following photo now stands as a rather graphic representation of the kind of turnover Waxman (and others in the space like The Hollywood Reporter and the LA Times) must sometimes deal with. Of the ten people flanking Waxman in this April 1, 2011 birthday celebration snapshot obtained by FishbowlLA, only one person remains employed with the start-up company today.
